If there was one relationship in DBZ that was always unique to me, it was the bond between Gohan and Vegeta.

To start, obviously in the Saiyan Saga, they were enemies who wanted each other dead.

However, in the Namek Saga, this is where things start getting a little interesting. Gohan saves Vegeta from Recoome’s attack, which is something that I always found interesting. 

Especially when you consider he literally had no reason to do so. While yes Vegeta saved Gohan (and Krillin) from nearly getting impaled by Guldo, that wasn’t because he saw them as friends. After all, this was the same guy who nearly killed Goku and would’ve killed Krillin, Chichi, Ox King and even Gohan himself so this scene was always intriguing to me. While you could argue that it was because of how kind Gohan is, it always interested me. Especially when Vegeta essentially repays the favor by saving Gohan from Frieza.

Later on in the Android Arc, after Vegeta tried to attack Cell in what’s his first noble and selfless act of the series, he’s overwhelmed and nearly killed by Cell before he’s saved by Gohan at the cost of his arm

The most interesting part of this is how this resulted in Vegeta’s first ever apology!

That’s right, Vegeta first ever apology wasn’t to Bulma, Trunks (Future or Present) or even Goku but it was to Son Gohan.

And following that when Gohan is nearly overwhelmed in the Kamehameha clash with Cell, it’s Vegeta once again, repaying the favor by serving as the distraction which let Gohan ultimately destroy Cell.

Thus, showing the starting progression of Vegeta’s characterization from the selfish anti-hero he was in this arc to a family man.

Skip seven years later to the Majin Buu arc, Vegeta scolds Gohan for slacking in his training and even expresses his disappointment of his performance against Dabura, thus letting me know they’ve gotten at least somewhat close during those seven years

As a bonus, while in his Majin state to boot, upon thinking that Gohan’s dead, he apologizes to Gohan again.

And lastly during Super, while interactions between the two have been limited, Vegeta thinks of Gohan’s strength when recruiting members during the Universe 6 arc

So in short, the bond between Gohan and Vegeta is indeed a very interesting one and one that should honestly be talked about more!

And as a little bonus to this post, just a little friendly reminder that Vegeta was, in a roundabout way, defeated by Gohan, haha
