And Gamaliel is funny, quick to laugh. He tells her about growing up under the care of Marise Kenton of all people, of the quiet in Penrith, his delight at finally seeing his family again.

"But surely you're not going back there? Now that we've found you you can stay here! It'll be so much fun, please say you will!?"

When he tip toes downstairs in the wee hours of the morning he runs into inquisitive Nogah, peppering him with half a dozen questions before he makes it to the bottom of the stairs. She just can't help it, it's so exciting to have a long-lost brother! Is he like her, playful and fun? Does he paint? Repair things?

They talk late into the evening about everything - where he's been, who he's been with, her life in Tenby, Nogah & Salathiel - until Adrienne falls asleep mid-sentence, leaving Gamaliel to contemplate this strange turn of events.

This is real. It's real and he's hugging his mother.

She sleeps for hours, days, years... until finally she's awake. She's awake and Gamaliel suddenly doesn't know what to do or say. Marise would tell him to just be himself. That he's a wonderful young man worthy of this moment. But it's hard to believe sometimes.

Dutifully Salathiel did as his mother asked, locating his long-lost brother in Penrith of all places! To say Gamaliel was surprised was an understatement, but he came without question to meet his mother. A woman he did not remember yet seeing her there, so weak and frail... it hurts him. A child's hurt, longing for family only to be told he has it.

He has it... but it's leaving him.

"Mother?"

Salathiel got his mother comfortable, reading to her for the rest of the day until she softly interrupted him.

"Salathiel, honey."

"Yes mother?"

"I... I have a request for you, dearest."

"Anything mother, anything."

"Would you friend your brother for me? He's been gone so long... just to see him one last time..."

"Mother..."

"We both know I don't have long. I just need to see him, to know he's well."

"Mom?"

Things quickly go downhill. Salathiel holds it together until after school, planning on falling apart quietly, alone in his room... but he finds his mother passed out on the floor.

It all comes to a head one morning before school. Adrienne sits them both out, she prepares her speech... and blurts it out. She's dying. Soon.

Poor sweet Nogah, she thinks it's a poor joke at first - laughing in delight. But Salathiel... her dear boy knows right away that his mother is serious.

But hiding her illness is getting harder and harder.

She still hasn't told them. After consulting with Detlef Heidrich (a last ditch effort to see if anything could be done) Adrienne just... she can't tell her children very soon they'll be orphans.

Heedless of his carefree sister and her troublemaking, the next day Salathiel makes some progress befriending Ginger Newson. She's well known in the Kingdom of Edirann as a bosom friend to Princess Katinka Blumenthal.

Like all teenagers, Nogah just knows she's got this. Nobody will catch her coming back-

In keeping in line with her girls-just-wanna-have-fun attitude, Nogah sneaks out with Katinka.
