I have been a big proponent of the idea that Bacon would be the only one capable of understanding Subz and therefore would be the only one suitable to carry on his legacy and I do stand by that, but I think a flaw in my previous post on it and the thing that would prevent Bacon from actually getting there is that it’s impossible to understand what Subz was going for while thinking solely within the boundaries of the server. When Bacon talks about understanding Subz and trying to reconcile him as someone who repaired spawn and someone who destroyed spawn, he, like, toes at the edge of the real question to be answered there, which is how Subz went from someone who loved Lifesteal enough to put hours and hours into grinding the materials for and rebuilding a decimated spawn to someone so bitter and jaded towards the server that he would put those same hours into bringing it to it’s knees. When he talks about the two not being so different, he’s not *wrong* but the way I think he means it and the way I think it applies to Subz aren’t the same even if they are related. Both Bacon and Subz work from a place of love for the server, but Bacon is operating within it, loving the server by both maintaining an environment that people would want to inhabit and creating conflict to inspire passion in his fellow server mates. Creation and destruction, the way Bacon does it, are both in service of making people want to play on the server as it is. Subz is operating entirely outside it. What he loves is a past version of the server and the love in his destruction of it comes from a combination of respect for that past and some lingering hope that his server members will prove to him that the things he loves about Lifesteal aren’t entirely gone. To Bacon, what Subz accomplished would have been a success, because it inspired people to log on. To Subz, it only affirmed his desire to leave because the way they responded wasn’t the way he wanted them to.
Bacon isn’t oblivious to this, he talks about it with either Zam or Derap, acknowledging that Subz’ plans helped the server, but that he probably didn’t mean for them to help it the way it did based on the fact that he did it so late at night. I know I said that Bacon’s ‘in-Lifesteal’ mentality would prevent him from understanding Subz, but that’s not entirely accurate because I think Bacon, human person behind the screen Bacon, does already get it in some amount. It’s in little things he says— his disdain for how Derap operates and his feelings on the Titanic, his views on the Flame conflict, him just this stream saying that the Wardens will only be repetitive if the rest of the server makes it repetitive— Bacon does share some of the same attitudes towards the server that Subz does. Not all of them but, like, enough. And it makes sense for him to given his history on the server and experiences this season. How much time was spent with Just Bacon and Subz online during the early months of this year? That, more than their conversations, is what makes Bacon the only one fitting to understand Subz.
What I’m more… not necessarily worried about, but I suppose sort of resigned to, is the way Bacon has tried to keep the fourth wall somewhat intact when talking explicitly about Subz. Whether he actually gets what Subz was going for or not, if he won’t talk about Subz as a human outside of Lifesteal, he will never be able to tell a story where he understands Subz. From the perspective of a Subz fan, there’s no satisfying end to this story that doesn’t say something critical about what the server has become. Bacon’s eventual success or failure in his search for Subz motives is only truly compelling if he drops his focus on spawn and looks at Lifesteal as a whole, because if he won’t do that, he’s inevitably going to fail. And I do think if anyone will break that fourth wall at this point, it’ll be Bacon. Again, he toes the line of it already. But… idk, I don’t know if anyone will meet him on that level and invite that sort of conversation. Not to be Spacewaffles on the Subzwaffles post, but that is one reason I’d love to see Planet log in and talk with Bacon or Zam about this, because Planet is another person who is impossible to understand if you’re only thinking about him in the context of the server and if nothing else I feel like he would get them thinking on that level.
Anyways! This sounds like a downer, but I promise it’s not, I’m so glad Bacon has continued the trend of dragging Subz miserable rotting corpse around. Subz is never going to die on Lifesteal no matter how many times he kills himself and I think that’s beautiful. And I am very excited for a new conflict with an interesting villain. Regardless of whether or not Bacon is able to be a compelling successor to Subz, the Warden plan will still be interesting for Bacon as an individual and I’m so fucking excited for Hannah to have a central place in the plot. I just wanted to kind of get these thoughts out before I let myself indulge entirely in how much I won today.

Yapping abt c!clownzy bc none of my friends want to hear about them anyways. honestly the thing about clownzy that makes it work so well isn’t that branzy is just nice to clown (even tho he is) or that they get along (even tho they do), but that branzy is one of the only people who manages to be both vulnerable with and nonthreatening to clown in a way clown seems deeply, almost subconsciously starved for.
like clown’s whole deal across lifesteal has been built on a paradox: he’s the strongest, and that strength isolates him, but he also needs that strength to matter. he doesn’t really trust people- he can’t, because trusting people gets you killed, but also because i think on a deeper level he’s afraid of what would happen if he stopped being necessary. if people didn’t need him, would they still want him? would he still have a place?
and that’s where branzy comes in. bc branzy, unlike a lot of other players, doesn’t try to prove he’s just as capable or just as scary. he’s competent, yeah- like, don’t underestimate him- but he never tries to posture like a rival. instead, he leans into the dynamic, into the asymmetry. he lets clown be the protector. he wants clown around. and not just for the strength- he seems to genuinely enjoy clown’s presence, even when clown is being off-putting or strange or, y’know, a little murdery.
branzy is kind of the only person who can make clown feel like he’s safe while still being needed. most players make clown choose one or the other. with branzy, he gets both. and branzy, for all his softness, isn’t weak. like, there’s a real core of vindictiveness in him, this willingness to retaliate when pushed too far, but that only deepens the connection. because clown respects that. he doesn’t want to babysit someone helpless; he wants someone who chooses to rely on him, who’s capable but still says, "i want you next to me."
