it's honestly so annoying when people dismiss very real concerns about how autistic people can't make friends or be welcomed socially with "people like autistic people! just follow these tips and don't be an asshole." it's not about whether you're an asshole or not. i guarantee you that people do not, in fact, like the person who smells bad, can't brush their hair, only wears sweatpants, can't regulate their tone of voice so is always speaking VERY LOUDLY, and frequently spills food and drink on themselves. this is an extremely common profile of An Autistic Person. if that person would not be welcomed and given resources like job opportunities in your social sphere, then no, your social sphere is not welcoming to autistic people and people do not like autistics there.

best part of princess bride is that inigo loudly and openly states to anybody who will listen that he's going to kill a guy for revenge and has been chasing this for a while and instead of anybody saying "but revenge wont bring ur father back are u really sure that killing this guy will make anything better arent u scared of regretting the one thing uve spent ur entire life chasing" they're all just like "yea dude sounds cool hope you find him" and then he does and inigo kills him and is just "aw cool my dads avenged now i can go ride off into the sunset with my friends" and i think thats actually really great. yea maybe revenge isnt always the answer but it sure does make you feel better

You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.
Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…
…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

People rly don't get that you can think you're being nice and still be incredibly ableist. You can repost the article about the girl with cerebral palsy getting asked to prom thinking it's so sweet that someone invited her without realizing how ableist you're being. You can make friends with the boy who has autism at school and joke with him that he's your boyfriend with the best of intentions- you are still incredibly ableist. You can push a person's wheelchair without asking because you want to help to be nice and you are still being ableist. You can grab the person who uses a cane to help them up without asking for permission to touch them only wanting to make things easier and still. Be. Ableist.
Polite ableism is just harder to talk about, you can't describe how it makes you feel enough, how it rips away your autonomy and makes you feel lesser than, and it's especially hard for those with intellectual disabilities to talk about and speak against, because it's so covert and it's EVERYWHERE.
Just like. Treat people normally??? Thanks
