As a 19-year-old sophomore at Stanford, Elizabeth Holmes decided to transform diagnostic medicine so she dropped out of college and used her tuition money to start her own company, Theranos. Ten years later, Holmes, pictured here holding a micro-vial, is on the cutting edge of medical technology — her new blood testing method allows hundreds of tests to be run using only a few drops of blood. And, Holmes’ methods are cheaper, faster, more accurate, and less invasive than conventional methods which often require a separate vial of blood for every test. As Holmes told Wired.com earlier this year, “I started this company because I wanted to spend my life changing our health care system. When someone you love gets really sick, most of the time when you find out, it’s too late to be able to do something about it. It’s heartbreaking… We wanted to make actionable health information accessible to people everywhere at the time it matters most. That means two things: being able to detect conditions in time to do something about them and providing access to information that can empower people to improve their lives.”

Bodies are so fucking weird. (Warning for mild discussions of dental issues and infections).
Back in June, I had an abscess in my gums. The dentist insisted it was in my tooth, but he wouldn't listen to me how it started. I'd had a raw spot in my gums that got infected and that's what it turned into. It started in my gums, not my tooth). I got 2 rounds of antibiotics and it still hung around.
Before I could go back to the dentist, in August I got super sick. Everyone thought I had Covid, even doctors. But the tests kept coming back negative. It lingered on and on for 7 months. When it wasn't Covid the doctor's just shrugged and said I seemed fine. Meanwhile I felt like I was operating at 1/4 lung capacity and was so exhausted I could barely function. Like risking falling asleep while driving at mid-day after a full night's sleep level tired. Finally, an urgent care doctor gave me extra strong antibiotics and I started feeling better immediately. I started coughing up all kinds of gross stuff from my lungs. Until finally this semi-solid glob, about the size and consistency of a soggy gummy bear came up. And I instantly felt 1000x better. That was about a month ago and I've been slowly recovering stamina ever since.
Well, the supposed abscess hadn't changed one bit. I assumed the bump would just be a scar and eventually the weird hole in it would eventually heal up. But then a few days ago...it just suddenly got bigger. Fearing the worst, I checked on it. And oh god so much stuff started coming out of it at the slightest touch.
And now, just 4 days later, it's cleared. Not fully healed, but the infection appears to be gone. Put on hold for 7 goddamn months. Only to speed run the healing process in a matter of days.
Just...what the fuck.
