The good thing about Tom’s is that it’s just another link in a long ass chain of in-between places. Plato’s full of them: Bubbles of liminality where anyone can be no-one for as long as they like. 

Lucy hates them and loves them all at once.

It’s the unspoken rule: Thou shalt not pry; for someone in Lucy’s profession, it’s a slice of juicy temptation, ripe for the taking and red like a warning. His stomach gurgles on his way in, a greeting of greasy perfume and too-dense heat clapping them on the back. Maybe they’ll order apple pie.

He spots Kenta easily— kid looks pretty with those eye bags —and smoothly slips past mercs and civilians alike. For once, Lucy tunes out all murmur but that of Chet Baker’s soft and miserable lullabies, wafting from the old speakers dotted about the room. It’s a painful exercise, but an exercise all the same, and they’re rather proud of themself when they make it to Kenta without having collected even a sliver of gossip from the surrounding booths and tables.

“Hel-lo,” Lucy greets his companion. They’re early. Or maybe Lucy’s late. Or, as is more commonplace, both. “Been here long?”
