Agile Coaching Certification
According to The 13th Annual State of Agile Report, when asked about the reasons for adopting Agile, the following response was received:
It was less about an increase in productivity (51% compared to 55% last year), more about increasing the team’s morale (34% compared to last year’s 28%), less about reducing project risks (28% compared to 37% last year) and more about reducing the project costs (41% compared to 24% last year).
1. ICP-ACC (ICAgile- Agile Certified Coach):
The ICP-ACC is one of two knowledge-based certifications on the Agile Coaching track. The certification focuses primarily on the mindset, roles, and responsibilities of an Agile Coach. After finishing the certification, the learner will be able to differentiate between and among mentoring, facilitating, professional coaching and teaching, and will also gain the skills needed to create a safe environment for meaningful collaboration and healthy conflict resolution within an agile team. This certification introduces participants to foundational team coaching skills and team development concepts for starting and growing teams while focusing on teams and organizations as human systems. A key part of this certification focuses on developing an understanding of the professional coaching skillset and the value of honing these skills to serve individuals on an agile team.
Agile Coaches or aspiring coaches with a passion for servant leadership and a desire to learn and practice facilitation, professional coaching, mentoring, and teaching in service of Agile teams. Other relevant roles include Scrum Masters, Iteration Managers and Agile Project Managers. Although it is not a formal prerequisite, we have found that this certification is best pursued after Agile Team Facilitation (ICP-ATF).
2 ICP-ATF (ICAgile- Agile Team Facilitation):
The ICP-ATF is one of two knowledge-based certifications on the Agile Coaching Track. It focuses primarily on the mindset and role of an agile team facilitator, while also providing group facilitation tools and techniques for effectively designing meetings and workshops that both engage the entire audience and drive towards agreed-upon outcomes. Through obtaining this certification, course participants will develop an appreciation for the art of facilitation as key to fostering collaboration and enabling self-organizing teams. In addition, participants will build their facilitator toolkits and gain experience facilitating specific agile practices most relevant to their organizational context.
Agile team leaders or aspiring team leaders with a passion for servant leadership and a desire to learn and practice the art of facilitation in the context of team facilitation and coaching. Relevant roles include Scrum Masters, Agile Project Managers, Agile Coaches and aspiring coaches, Product Owners, Business Analysts, and anyone with the desire to explore the power of facilitation.
3 ICP-CAT (ICAgile- Coaching Agile Transitions):
The ICP-CAT is the second of two knowledge-based certifications on the Enterprise Coaching for Agility Track. This certification focuses on the field of Enterprise Coaching for Agility, explores the core elements of an agile transformation, and links the core enterprise coaching competencies in a way that empowers coaches to act as agents of change in organizations.
The Learning Outcomes also delve in to the pursuit of professional mastery and the ethical considerations of Enterprise Coaching for Agility. They then look at elements central to agile transitions such as organizational and human change processes, transformation strategies, addressing organizational impediments, and communicating, educating, and facilitating at an organizational level.
As an advanced path, most courses in Enterprise Coaching for Agility involve a combination of classroom learning, and ongoing group discussions around practical experience in the field
Relevant roles include enterprise, program and team-level Agile Coaches, Agile Team Facilitators, or anyone aspiring to these roles. Also, anyone with a strong background in change management and/or organizational design and a curiosity about agile approaches at the enterprise level will benefit from this certification.
4 ICP-ENT (ICAgile- Agility In The Enterprise):
The ICP-ENT is the first of two knowledge-based certifications on the Enterprise Coaching for Agility Track. This certification focuses on developing an understanding of agility at the enterprise level from structural, process, leadership, and cultural perspectives.
The Learning Outcomes include topics such as systems and complexity theory, measuring business performance from an agile perspective, agile frameworks for enterprise scaling, awareness of organizational design and structure, understanding leadership development, and engaging leadership in conversations about organizational culture.
As an advanced path, most courses in Enterprise Coaching for Agility involve a combination of classroom learning, and ongoing group discussions around practical experience in the field.
Relevant roles include enterprise, program and team-level Agile Coaches, Agile Team Facilitators, or anyone aspiring to these roles. Also, anyone with a strong background in change management and/or organizational design and a curiosity about agile approaches at the enterprise-level will benefit from this certification.
5 Scrum Alliance Certified Team Coach® (CTC) This is a journey
The natural next step in the journey for an active Certified Scrum Professional® (CSP®-SM or CSP®-PO) is to become a Scrum Alliance Certified Team Coach®. As a CTC, you’ll work with Scrum teams, stakeholders, and management to improve performance and outcomes. Unlike a Scrum Master, a CTC can work across multiple teams. And unlike a Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC), a Certified Team Coach focuses on a subset of an organization in a project or program, or across multiple teams.
If you have demonstrated experience, knowledge, professional collaboration, and skills, it’s time to explore becoming a CTC, a certification that offers a recognized credential to qualified coaches who can effectively impact department, project, and program agility.

WHY ICAgile COACHING?
The Agile Manifesto changed the world. It introduced us all to the idea that change can be harnessed and celebrated. It provided us values and principles upon which to stand and from which to build practices that help us keep pace with an ever-changing world. It taught us that change is the only constant, and that it should be embraced. But, it didn’t change the human truth that change is hard, and in the face of constant change, we can be lost, hurt, confused, or left behind. Change challenges our thinking, our world-view, and our self-view. Agile coaching is a craft intended to guide others in understanding, processing, and embracing constant change, so that the change is sustainable, lasting beyond the individuals. Agile coaches guide individuals and teams to get clear about the change they desire, identify places where current reality does not match desired reality and then take action to close the gap — all in service of delivering business results that matter. Along the way coaches hold the bigger view of desired change, even when others may have lost sight. Agile coaches support, guide, coach, teach, mentor and facilitate change without colluding with the current reality. The ICAgile Coaching Track provides a development path in skills needed by agile coaches. Through the track, agile coaches learn progressively more complex skills, and receive exposure to rich areas of further self-development beyond the classroom. Agile coaches bring their whole self to the work, weaving together skills from professional facilitation, professional coaching, mentoring, and teaching. They do this in service to teams, to cause change, navigate conflict, intervene, and guide teams toward joyful high performance. The track’s two knowledge-based certifications describe steps of development in Agile Team Facilitation (ICP-ATF) and Agile Coaching (ICP-ACC); this is followed by a competence-based ICAgile Expert step (ICE-AC) intended for those who are practicing agile coaches. The content a learner will experience in the knowledge-based certifications is necessarily “a mile wide and an inch deep” because they are experiencing a confluence of professional disciplines that each have their own deep roots, techniques, and craft. It is expected that learners will find compelling areas to further study, in their service to the work and teams. By design, expertise in the learner is not presumed simply by engaging in the classroom; rather it is demonstrated at the ICAgile Expert step, based on demonstrable competence and peer review. To effectively operate at each step, there is an increasing level of skill, gravitas, and scope of influence expected.
What follows are steps in a development path. They are not roles or jobs. Organizations will create roles and positions that may or may not map to these steps, but we strongly encourage the perspective that all of these skills are necessary for everyone functioning as an agile coach, no matter their scope or level of influence. Broadly, those steps are described below.
THE AGILE TEAM FACILITATION STEP (ICP-ATF)
Operating at the team facilitation step, agile coaches learn the core skills of facilitation and gain the self-leadership needed to use them well. For those working with teams on the-ground, facilitation skills are the first step because they pave the way for teams to achieve true empowerment, collaboration, and ownership of their actions and decisions.
In this way, facilitation skills help the vision of agile-done-well come true.
This step is important for coaches operating at any level of an organization or scope of influence, whether that is with one team, a group of teams, an executive team or a whole organization. Further, the skills learned at this step may also provide value for learners in other disciplines, such as product ownership, technical leadership, or delivery management. Finally, although it is the first step in this development progression, it is not “for beginners only.”
THE AGILE COACHING STEP (ICP-ACC)
At the ICAgile Coaching step, the coach has expert-level understanding of current lean agile practices; is significantly skilled in team facilitation; and has developed some professional coaching and mentoring skill. Coaches with these skills are likely operating at a scope of several teams or a program, starting new teams, mentoring others, or spending significant time working with managers and engaging with impediments outside the direct control of teams.
THE AGILE COACHING FOR ENTERPRISES STEP
Coaches operating at this enterprise coaching step (which is addressed in another ICAgile track called Enterprise ICAgile Coaching) have developed advanced systems coaching, organizational development, culture, change management and leadership skills and uses those skills to affect organizations at large. An Enterprise Agile Coach works at all levels in an organization to help the organization use agile as a strategic asset for business value generation, which often includes culture change.
AGILE COACHING INFLUENCE AND IMPACT
This diagram articulates the different spaces of impact, change, and intervention where Agile Coaches may interact — where they have to work. This track emphasizes that to effectively impact the outer bands, one must have done the work on the inside — starting with the self.
The Learning Objectives (LOs) in the Agile Coaching Track focus on competencies required for self, individuals, team and program level impact. The Enterprise Coaching Track builds upon the LOs in this track and adds a focus for Program and Organizational level impact. The scope of leadership expands, self, team, multi-team, enterprise, one’s leadership, focus, capability and gravitas need to also grow to be effective at those different levels.

his is one of the very common questions I came across now a day, what is the difference between an Agile Coach and Professional Coach. Let’s try to find its answer by going to its root. International Coaching Federation (ICF) is considered a gold standard for professional coaching. Similarly, ICAgile (International Consortium for Agile) is an organization to define the learning objectives for different certificates, including the “Agile Coaching” . Here is a definition of Coaching as defined by ICF .
“Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Here is a definition of “Agile Coaching” as per ICAgile.
“Agile coaches support, guide, coach, teach, mentor, and facilitate change without colluding with the current reality.”
There is a difference between the definition of coach between ICF and ICAgile. Agile Coach is doing more than just coaching; he/she is also doing training, mentor, and facilitation. It is like you order the apple, but you got a fruit basket as a result. Although Apple is a part of the fruit basket, you also get more fruits in addition to the apple.
Let’s take a look at the core competencies defined by the ICF. Although they changed the model last year, “Coaching Mindset,” and reorganized the competencies, the same applies to the new model as well. Here is a list of 11 core competencies.

Set Boundaries for Agile Coaching
Let’s take a deep dive and explore both sides by side. Here is a comparison of ICF competencies with ICAgile learning objectives.
There is no direct one to one mapping in some areas. Such as ICF core competency 3 “Establish Trust and Intimacy with the Client” is somehow similar to ICAgile learning objective “Designing a Coaching Alliance”, to the best of my knowledge. As you can see that ICAgile doesn’t cover all the competencies of professional coaching defined by ICF especially ethics, goal setting, and accountability. On the other hand, ICAgile covers other learning objective such as “Coach as a Mentor”, “Coach as a Teacher”, “Coach as a Facilitator”, and “Coach as a Team Coach,” which are not in the ICF core competencies. This can also be illustrated by the following diagram.
