her  comment  somewhat  catches  him  off  guard.  most  people  around  here  couldn't  care  less  whether  he's  cleaning  stables  or  fitting  horse  shoes,  but  she  seems  the  be  paying  attention.  "well,  thank  you.  they  sure  got  their  charm  too."  he  responds,  speaking  on  the  horses  as  a  smile  widens  on  his  presence.  it  takes  him  a  little  while.  suddenly,  having  someone  in  front  of  him  who  seems  just  as  comfortable  around  the  hay  and  manure  of  it  all  —  just  like  he  is.  "no  one  here  has  been  this  nice  yet.  what's  the  catch?"  he  can't  help  but  ask,  yet  happy  to  receive  her  name  and  the  offer  of  a  tour  in  return.  "i've  shambled  around.  nice  place  to  grow  up,  i  must  admit."  he  tells  her,  closing  his  toolbox  before  leaning  against  the  stable  door.  so  far,  he's  been  able  to  hide  the  fact  that  he  has  a  limp.  after  all,  that's  not  all  there  is  to  him.  "so  i'll  see  you  more  often  then?"

cassie had been lingering near the edge of the stables, sipping an iced tea and watching the new guy work. there was an easy focus to him, the kind that came from actually caring. when he spoke and finally turned her way, she smiled. warm, unbothered, and just a little curious. “you’ve got a good touch.” she said, stepping closer to gently stroke the mare’s neck, her movements relaxed and familiar. “i’ve been around this place since i could walk. mud's fine.” she glanced down at his hands, then his shirt, and grinned. “that shirt’s a lost cause, though.” only then did she take his offered hand, her grip firm but easy. “cassie.” she said. “we've been coming to this club since… basically forever. so if you ever need a tour, i’m usually around.”

"how  they  were?"  they  repeat  the  words  with  the  raise  of  an  eyebrow  and  the  tilt  of  her  head.  "how  were  things  according  to  you?  —  because  you  can't  tell  me  you  think  those  few  nights  together  meant  something."  harley's  twirling  a  strand  of  hair  in  circles  as  a  sense  of  comfort.  somehow,  they  radiate  calmness,  although  their  own  actions  sting  their  heart  more  than  the  other's  do.  their  late  night  conversations  were  the  opposite  of  whatever  is  happening  now  and  they're  hard  to  forget.  then  again,  the  daylight  isn't  as  forgiving  and  harley  gaslights  herself  more  than  anyone  else.  "you  did  us  both  a  favor.  so  thank  you."  the  smile  they try to  paint  on  their  face  hurts.  "she  seems  nice,  do  you  like  her?"

“   what   i   want   is   for   things   to   go   back   to   how   they   were   between   us   .   i   know   i   fucked   up   but   ,   ”   femme   inhales   sharply   ,   ashamed   and   unsure   of   what   to   say   to   make   things   right   .   “   i   hate   it   when   you’re   mad   at   me   .   and   i   hate   it   even   more   when   we   don’t   talk   .   i   just   want   you   back   .   ”

it  takes  her  effort  to  hold  her  scoff  back,  yet  a  serious  gaze  aims  at  his  direction.  "fuck  right  or  wrong."  yara  blurts  out,  shaking  her  head  as  she  looks  at  him.  "don't  push  me  away  if  that's  not  what  you  want.  it's  not  fair.  you're  not  giving  me  the  choice."  because  despite  things  being  difficult  before,  it's  not  like  she  wouldn't  choose  him  all  over  again.  maybe  it's  her  that's  ridiculous,  but  the  vulnerable  moments  they  shared  weighed  up  to  the  hurt.  "this  —  hurts  more  than  anything  you've  done  before.  you  telling  me  we  should  just  be  friends."  eyes  soften  as  she  looks  at  him,  not  pushing  her  boundaries  any  further  while  she's  already  in  his  space.  "we're  not  gonna  be  friends,  loren.  —  you're  gonna  have  to  make  a  choice."  and  she  wants  to  tell  him  how  much  he  means,  but  the  word  can't  seem  to  leave  her  lips.

"i don't know what i want . i want you but i can't have you , i feel like i'm constantly stuck between what's right and what's wrong .." his sister was putting too much pressure on herself , leaving it all in her hands when he could help relieve some of it . but dealing with tatum wasn't so simple . she loved too hard and though they weren't blood related , he couldn't help but feel like they were because he , too , held people at the same regard . he was so angry half the time , he couldn't see straight . yara was the only one to ground him , to peel back his layers until he was naked and it's evident now when she reaches to touch him , skin warming beneath her fingertips . "i can't be the reason you get hurt again ."
