life out of loss.

1 year ago this very weekend I miscarried our first child at 8 weeks. I remember that weekend so clear.  It was by far the hardest time in my life and I have such a vivid memory of that whole week. Megan and I went to Jacksonville for the weekend to run the Gate River Run. That Friday I had started bleeding a little bit which scared me because I knew blood could be a sign of a miscarriage, I also knew it could mean nothing.  Megan was strong for me when I couldn't be strong for myself. We went about our weekend and still ran the race. I continued to bleed just a small amount. It was a fun weekend but I couldn’t get the thought of possibly losing our baby off my mind. On our drive home, Megan fell asleep and I silently cried while listening to Oceans(Where feet may fail) by Hilllsong. While listening to the words of this song I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. That song still brings me to tears.

             We got home about 3 in the afternoon and I started bleeding heavier, in that moment I went to Matt and I fell into his arms. I just knew it wasn’t a good sign. At around 10pm we got in bed and I could tell something wasn’t right, I got up and went to the bathroom and that’s when I passed what would’ve been our child. I lost it. I was standing in a puddle of my own tears; I couldn’t shake the overwhelming sense of loss I was feeling. As I stared into the toilet at what most people would see as just a ball of tissue, I saw missed birthdays. I saw what would have been our first child. All I wanted to do was pick it up and capture this moment so that is exactly what I did. It may seem gross to you to take a photo of a ball of tissue but to me that was our child and I had already started dreaming of a future with that sweet babe. At just 8 weeks his/her heart was beating, the arms and legs were growing longer and the fingers, toes and sex organs had begun to form. That day forever changed me.

             As that week went on every time I went to the bathroom the blood was a constant reminder of WHO, not what I had lost. I had lost our very first child but I also gained strength I never knew I had. 3 weeks after miscarrying I found out I was pregnant again. Excited? Yes. Scared? Of course. But God saw us through and gave us our beautiful June Penelope Lail. She is a constant reminder of Gods sovreignty. Even though Miscarrying is extremely common it doesn't make it any easier. Even for people who have multiple miscarriages it is just as hard if not harder every single time. Miscarrying a child is not just a statistic it is a devastating loss of life. I believe its something we should be more vocal about so that we can stand by one another and be strong for each other when the other has no more strength left. Lets be somebodys life out of their loss. I fell in love with that child the day I found out I was pregnant and I will never forget him/her.
