Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

Ngl I grew up with these plates and the style of them remains my favorite, but since I can't eat off them anymore I've been steadily accruing every variant of them as dishes for watercolor.
I can't let them go entirely, but at least by putting other toxic things on them I can fully resist the urge to put pie on them.

It's 3am for me which is, I'm told, a terrible time to post shit but
I spent a handful of time on my Reward Pinup and dammit all, I wanna post it. So here's the sketchy sketchy. Anatomy still got some fiddling and I ain't satisfied with his character traits yet, but we on the move

Daytime reblogs with a bonus of some close ups!
I had to up the exposure a wee bit for the last one to make it a bit easier to see but! I hid little easter eggs in the rocks cause I got no chill. Hilariously they aren't even visible in the full image due to the coloring, but I know they're there.
Welp! A full month and a questionable amount of hours later! I think the sucker is finally done, lolol. Now, as per my agreement with my partner, I'm free to draw pinups to my hearts content. >:}

Do you like vintage scientific illustrations?
Do you like not spending huge amounts of money on them?
This website has a huge collection of high quality vintage illustrations that you can download FOR FREE

They got pretty much everything!! Vintage maps, mushrooms, flowers, trees, bugs, birds, corals, fish, palm trees, feathers, tropical fruits, you name it!!

They even got some works of my dude Ernst Haeckel on there!!!!

I could go on and on but I suggest you check it out yourself. Personally, I will be covering my entire apartment with these once copyshops are open again. But even if you don’t want to do that, just browsing all these beautiful illustrations is a great way to spend your time.
Have fun and stay save!

I hate that I’m always trying to find cool biology themed stuff to wear but all the “nature inspired” clothing companies just have like two crossed arrows or a minimalistic mountain on a sweatshirt. Fucking lame, that’s barely even nature-adjacent. Put the life cycle of a salamander on a jacket, put hyena skeleton patterns on leggings, put a damn field guide of birds of prey on a peacoat and THEN you can have my money. Do NOT give me a shirt with a leaf on it that says “stay wild” or some bullshit I would much prefer clothing that broadcasts to everyone around me how many teeth an adult Jaguar has or how some pitcher plants can catch and digest rats.

Progress continues on the monster! I'm almost done with "inks" now; just gotta do some flames on the side and some smoke up top, as well as some texture on the bg. It looks busy ATM, but that'll fade out once the colors and adjustments are in. :D
I...might...have spent uh 3+ hours...on the uhm. On the rocks. O3O
Maybe.
BUT IN MY DEFENSE
I was hiding stuff in them. Find it all if you can~ it'll be even harder once I'm done. >:}

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.
This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)
If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...
Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!
You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!
Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!

We found a book today that was a hardcover collection of Jello recipes. I think it was from the 60s, from the style of photos, but I didn't bother checking...I really wanted to buy it to make it into a sketchbook.
But kinda hard to rationalize gutting a perfectly good jello recipe book for the sake of making a goofy sketchbook... especially when it's $8 and I've got like. Over a dozen old books I need to Sketchbook-ize
#but man.#im still thinking about you jello book#if you're there in the future#you may yet become a sketchbook

I love the way you draw wings 🥹 they’re so realistic but very stylised at the same time, do you have any tips or tutorials for drawing them?
ya
a million people have made better wing tutorials than this but i think the best way to get a wing to look nice is to understand how it folds & what movements it can make in 3D space & how angle and perspective affect feathers. think of it like fanning out a deck of playing cards and viewing it edge-on
