Question for the OWGS!
Those floating islands on Giant’s Deep are really fascinating!! Do we have any idea what kinds of minerals are present there?
Thanks in advance for your time and answer!
- A Curious Hearthian 🪨🏝️
Thanks for the question, anon! This is a really fun one, and we were both so excited to see it come up in our inbox.
We haven’t done much more than a precursory survey of Giant’s Deep so far, but already we have some cool ideas with what’s going on geologically. We’ll be diving in deep once we get to our official survey of the planet, but we’ll share a peek of what we’re thinking so far!
Fig. 1: A shot from Gabbro's Island located on Giant's Deep. The OWGS ship is parked in the midground.
The most important indication of what the floating islands are made of comes first from . . . Well, the fact that they’re floating! In order for them to float, they must be less dense than the ocean they’re floating in, either because they are abnormally light, the ocean is abnormally dense, or both! Since we’re interested in exploring geology, we’ve decided to go with the possibility of the islands being abnormally light for their size, since that offers more constraint on their composition.
But . . . how can a rock float, especially assuming the ocean on Giant’s Deep is no more dense than an ocean on Earth?
If you’ve ever used a pumice stone in the bath, this might not surprise you! Pumice is a rock formed by the rapid cooling of magma that is ejected during a violent volcanic eruption. Because it cools so quickly, a lot of the air trapped within the magma remains once the rock solidifies, so much of the space within a pumice is actually air! This makes it less dense than water, so pumice will float!
Fig. 2: Image showing pumice (floating) and a more dense specimen (sunk). Note the abundant vesicles present in the pumice that gives it it's signature texture! These vesicles are also what allows pumice to float due to their ability to act as air pockets!
Since pumice is quick to cool, it’s made of volcanic glass, so the pedantic answer to what minerals can be found on Giant’s Deep's islands is: None!
There may be minerals to be found somewhere else on Giant’s Deep, however . . .
Now, the islands on Giant’s Deep are massive. You might be wondering: How did they get there? Is there evidence of volcanoes that could make such massive pumice stones on Giant’s Deep? And, to that, we say . . . We can’t wait to more thoroughly survey these islands ourselves soon!
You may have noticed that pumice has a very distinct texture to it - and if we're being honest, we haven't found that particular texture on our quick fly-bys of Giant's Deep - so the islands being made of pumice is a preliminary idea, that may be subject to change when we do our full survey in the coming months! But hey! That's what science is all about, thinking up hypothesis and attempting to prove or disprove them!
See you in the next loop! The OWGS Team
#very cool!#I wonder what kind of rock could even survive GD's environment#owgs#outer wilds geological survey

More screenshots from my new trip into the black (because apparently that's what I'm posting now XD). These are all from the Traikeou MU-C c14-1 system, which has a whopping 64 bodies. Also has some neat biological signals on some atmosphere-free planets, so that's cool
(Also, I was taking constant heat damage in the first picture due to that planet having a surface temperature of 815K)

Outer Wilds - Campfire Cooking Quantum Moon
Delicious in Dungeon (Dunmeshi) x Outer Wilds
---
"I don't think we should eat it." "What? Why not?" "It's giving off a really weird... aura. HEY! You totally just took a bite!?" --- This image only exists because my head had a trainwreck moment. I was craving cheesecake real bad, quantum cheese was mentioned while I was reviewing the angler hotpot piece. All the worlds collided at once and I just automatically put this together. brb putting my brain in the washing machine.

Regolith
Was hoping to have chapter 2 of Reverb done before this, but alas...
Skrunkolith got their own EDM/DnB/Emo Midwestern/Post rock playlist ::3
Distractions fade away
The tides change, the waves remain
My life is out that door
Warring what's worth fighting for
Stay quiet one more day
Waste away
I don't think so
Just try and hold me back

Block Party the Third!!!
We managed a shorter party this month, despite technical difficulties, but now people are eager for the next one!
This time it will be on the weekend of the 6th-7th of June! If you'd like to come join as a streamer, check the signup sheet! HUGE thanks to @kirtini for setting up an automatic time-zone comparison within the sheet itself. Just put your name and Twitch down, how many hours you'd like to stream, and when you're available. And if you can't stream, still feel free to come hang out and chat!

my part of an art trade with @dekkiidan! this is his OC mohs surveying one of the many quantum shards found in the quantum grove!
#this is cute!#now I'm wondering about the implications of taking a quantum shard though#if you put it down can it reappear in its old locations?#or does it swap between likely places for you to have put it down?#outer wilds#outer wilds fanart

Did you know that the Outer Wilds Geological Survey database has a custom theme? We've crammed lots of cool extra information into this version of our site, and would love for you to see it!
You can access the web version of the OWGS via:-https://outerwildsgeology.tumblr.com !
A big shout-out to @lutiaskokopelli for helping us with some of the coding kinks of the custom theme - we couldn't have done it without you!
And finally, a huge thank you for 100 followers! We're over the moon (Attlerock?) that so many of you are as excited and curious about our little project as we are, so from all of us here at the OWGS, thank you!
