Social Media in Times of Tragedy
With the way social media and other online blog sites affect our everyday lives today, it is essential that a company have a proper understanding of how to respond to natural and unfortunately unnatural tragedies that happen in our society. The way a company reacts or doesn’t react on social media to a tragedy could sway the customer’s view of that company, effecting its brand in either a positive or negative way. During times of tragedy a company’s social media marketing team must first have a plan in place to either continue everyday social medial use or if and when to pause activity. An example of this decision to continue or stop activity would be Apple’s presence on social media after the death of Steve Jobs compared to another company’s decision. Next a social media marketing team should understand the scope of the tragedy by assessing the news and determining the weight of the situation. Not properly or under evaluating a circumstance could potentially give your brand an unprofessional or negative look. An example of a social media marketing team misevaluating a situation would be Digiorno Pizza in September 2014 when they used the hashtag #WhyIStayed, a hashtag intended to show positivity and support amongst domestic violence vacuums during the Ray Rice trial, and used it negligently to promote their pizza because of their mistake of not evaluating. Lastly, if the company chooses to be active on social media during a time of tragedy they should relay the proper message to show support in a way that doesn’t seem product pushing or brand pushing. An example of positive social media presence by a company after a tragedy would be different television personalities and hosts making sympathetic social media post about the grief and overall tragedy of the Orlando Shooting, which in turn could have swayed the public’s view of whatever company that person was working for. Unwired Day
Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 PM was the time I decided to start my experience replicating the University of Maryland study of withholding from technology for a complete 24 hours. I chose this day specifically because I knew it was a day that I would be a little busier than normal in hopes that I wouldn't become as bored throughout the day. Even in my attempts to make this day as easy as it could be, this 24 hour period was harder than I expected in the end. In no surprise to myself, Monday night was probably the hardest part of the experience because of the lack of my normal routine of watching YouTube videos, looking at facbook, and scrolling Instagram, before falling asleep. After eventually falling asleep at 2:00 AM, I woke up at 8:30 by an actual alarm clock to get ready for my physical therapy that I had at 9:00 because of my labrum surgery I had a month ago. Using an actual alarm clock was something that I hadn't done in a while, even though I have a perfectly good one on my desk. I chose to put my phone in my dresser drawer during the day so I wouldn't be tempted to look at it. Therapy wasn't really much different than normal because of the fact that patients aren’t supposes to use their phones while at therapy. After therapy I went back to my house and went to back to sleep since I didn't have class until 2:00 PM and also the fact that I didn't get as much sleep as normal the previous night. I set my alarm for 1:30 PM on my real alarm clock, something I would normally just do on my phone and went to sleep until that time. After waking up at 1:30 PM and getting ready, I walked to school because of my very close proximity to campus. After class ended at 3:15 PM, I walked back to my house were I cleaned my house out of boredom until 5:00 PM. I showered and started a 15 minute nap at 6:00 PM which ended up becoming a 2 and a half hour nap. I woke up at 8:30 PM coming to the conclusion that I have absolutely no chance of sleeping tonight and ended up just hanging with my friends until 10:00 PM to finish to 24 hours. Looking back at the end of the 24 hour period, even with all my attempts to try and make this day as easy as possible for myself as I could, it was still very different and even at sometimes difficult. From things that I knew would be hard to get through like sleeping without my phone, to smaller things like not having my phone for music on the way to class. I didn't completely realize going into this experiment the amount of time each day each person spends using technology, especially when we don’t even realize it.

Goals
Hello, my name is Cody Vaughn. I'm in my last semester of college before I receive a bachelors degree in business management. I just finished my last season of collegiate football at UNA and am now looking forward to finding a job and starting a life outside of school. The three main goals I have for this course is to fully understand the importance of marketing in social media, how to apply marketing in social media, and overall improve my online course taking skills. I hope to achieve these goals I have stated and apply them in my life. Feb 7th, 2017 3:48:54pm
