photo by Kevin Westenberg: BLUR. THE ROUNDHOUSE, LONDON. Sept.7.1995. BLUR you say? Yes! BLUR. BLUR vs OASIS? Well, who cares at this point they were both great and why not celebrate them.  It was an amazing time in London when this shoot took place. This was prime time BLUR! ‘Parklife’ had come out the year before to great fanfare, which made their name forever more. They were just about to release ‘The Great Escape’ and they were all in a fantastic headspace during these days. This was a two-day shoot for various publications including the N.M.E., Rolling Stone Magazine in NY and also some work for the band themselves as a commissioned press shoot. Looking through the shoot now 25 years later, there are a huge number of genuinely warm funny moments where you can tell the feeling within the band was harmony. I really wish I could show more but I have to save them for the actual book project. We shot in Chalk Farm photo studio, John Henry’s Rehearsal space, then down to the streets in Fitzrovia including Fitzroy Square.  Finally, we ended up at the Roundhouse in Camden. Fitting since there was a lot of drinking going on at the ‘Good Mixer’ Camden at this time in the music world was the centre of the universe. Prior to the roundhouse giant remodel it was still quite brick and railroad inside and the surrounding area of the roundhouse was more or less dirt and gravel which is where this particular shot was taken. I love the mood of the location, the perfect dreary grey London light and most importantly, the feeling going on between them.  Each of their personalities shines through here. Great memories. [X]

In Blur, it was Damon who got everybody out of bed in the morning. He always wanted just one more rehearsal before a gig or just one more song for the album. That’s the difference between a band that succeeds and a band that doesn’t. A band needs to some extent to be a dictatorship. It was absolutely essential to us.
