Tbh I do think Erwin would support the Rumbling though that's purely based on how I interpreted his character when he was gambling and sacrificing soldiers when he was still alive (that's a really out of context way to put it but it about sums it up). It's hard to say what he would do now because he ultimately did all of that for knowledge and his dream, so if he finally knew the truth, I'm not sure how he'd act in this case where it is in fact his nation's survival. These are interesting talks!

Interestingly in the poll, 30% think Erwin would support the Rumbling but only 5% think Mike would despite their being pictured together. Oluo (5.8%), Petra (3.1%), and Marco (2.2%) are also given the benefit of the doubt. Only Erwin is singled out as a contradiction to what Hange is saying.

In my rather unkind tags on the meme I posted, I mentioned character bias as a main contributing factor. In the manga, Erwin always had plans in place to protect civilians but when those measures failed, he took the blame without argument. His quiet acceptance when outsiders viewed him as ruthless was his guilt and self hatred at play. Many in fandom seem to have taken him at face value despite evidence to the contrary. I get it. 

But characters who knew Erwin in canon felt differently, and Hange is here making a strong statement. The framing of these panels do not leave it open to debate. Hange says, “No one in the Survey Corps would be that small minded.” Hange has never been a character whose insight and intelligence were to be doubted. 

“It’s hard to say how Erwin would’ve responded to the threats facing them” is a fair statement. He’d have a different approach from Hange and Zackly for sure. We can speculate all day long on what that would be. But “it’s hard to say how Erwin would respond to genocide” is not debatable.  He wouldn’t support it. Period. Case closed. The end. Slams gavel. Debate over.  “Erwin would not support mass slaughter” is now a canon fact.

are there any posts highlighting/collating the small nods to Erwin and other characters mentioning him thus far? Do we have much of levi remembering?

There is now! :}  

Rest assure Erwin has *not* been forgotten, there are lots of nods and references to him throughout the manga.  Levi makes several references to Erwin immediately after his death, but after chapter 85 he becomes increasingly silent, and in chapter 90 he barely says anything, just stands in the shadows looking lost and bereaved.  It’s really only in chapter 106 that he really starts speaking again and it’s fair to say he is not a happy man.
