QuickTime is an extensible multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc., capable of handling various formats of digital video, picture, sound, panoramic images, and interactivity. First made in 1991, the latest Mac version, QuickTime X, is currently available on Mac OS X Snow Leopard and newer. Apple ceased support for the Windows version of QuickTime in 2016.(3)

QuickTime is bundled with macOS. QuickTime for Microsoft Windows is downloadable as a standalone installation, and was bundled with Apple's iTunes prior to iTunes 10.5, but is no longer supported and therefore security vulnerabilities will no longer be patched.(3) Already, at the time of the Windows version's discontinuation, two such zero-day vulnerabilities (both of which permitted arbitrary code execution) were identified and publicly disclosed by Trend Micro; consequently, Trend Micro strongly advised users to uninstall the product from Windows systems.(5)(6)

Software development kits (SDK) for QuickTime are available to the public with an Apple Developer Connection (ADC) subscription.

It is available free of charge for both macOS and Windows operating systems. There are some other free player applications that rely on the QuickTime framework, providing features not available in the basic QuickTime Player. For example, iTunes can export audio in WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless. In addition, macOS has a simple AppleScript that can be used to play a movie in full-screen mode,(7) but since version 7.2 full-screen viewing is now supported in the non-Pro version.(8)

QuickTime Pro(edit)

QuickTime Player 7 is limited to only basic playback operations unless a QuickTime Pro license key is purchased from Apple. Until recently(when?), Apple's professional applications (e.g. Final Cut Studio, Logic Studio) included a QuickTime Pro license. Pro keys are specific to the major version of QuickTime for which they are purchased and unlock additional features of the QuickTime Player application on macOS or Windows.(9) The Pro key does not require any additional downloads; entering the registration code immediately unlocks the hidden features.

QuickTime 7 is still available for download from Apple, but as of mid 2016, Apple stopped selling registration keys for the Pro version.

Features enabled by the Pro license include, but are not limited to:

Editing clips through the cut, copy and paste functions, merging separate audio and video tracks, and freely placing the video tracks on a virtual canvas with the options of cropping and rotation.

Saving and exporting (encoding) to any of the codecs supported by QuickTime. QuickTime 7 includes presets for exporting video to a video-capable iPod, Apple TV, and the iPhone.

Saving existing QuickTime movies from the web directly to a hard disk drive. This is often, but not always, either hidden or intentionally blocked in the standard mode. Two options exist for saving movies from a web browser:

Save as source – This option will save the embedded video in its original format. (I.e. not limited to .mov files.)

Save as QuickTime movie – This option will save the embedded video in a .mov file format no matter what the original container is/was.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard includes QuickTime X. QuickTime Player X lacks cut, copy and paste and will only export to four formats, but its limited export feature is free. Users do not have an option to upgrade to a Pro version of QuickTime X, but those who have already purchased QuickTime 7 Pro and are upgrading to Snow Leopard from a previous version of Mac OS X will have QuickTime 7 stored in the Utilities or user defined folder. Otherwise, users will have to install QuickTime 7 from the 'Optional Installs' directory of the Snow Leopard DVD after installing the OS.

Encoding and transcoding video and audio from one format to another. Command-line utilities afconvert (to convert audio formats), avconvert (to convert video formats) and qtmodernizer (to automatically convert older formats to H.264/AAC) are provided with macOS for power users.

Decoding video and audio, then sending the decoded stream to the graphics or audio subsystem for playback. In macOS, QuickTime sends video playback to the Quartz Extreme (OpenGL) Compositor.(10)

A 'component' plug-in architecture for supporting additional 3rd-party codecs (such as DivX).

Due to macOS Mojave being the last version to include support for 32-bit APIs and Apple's plans to drop 32-bit application support in future macOS releases, many codecs will no longer be supported in newer macOS releases, starting with macOS Catalina, which will be released in October 2019.

PictureViewer(edit)

PictureViewer is a component of QuickTime for Microsoft Windows and the Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 operating systems. It is used to view picture files from the still image formats that QuickTime supports. In macOS, it is replaced by Preview.(14)(15)

As of version 7.7.9, the Windows version requires one to go to their 'Windows Uninstall Or Change A Program' screen to 'modify' their installation of QuickTime 7 to include the 'Legacy QuickTime Feature' of 'QuickTime PictureViewer'.

File formats(edit)

The native file format for QuickTime video, QuickTime File Format, specifies a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (e.g. for subtitles). Each track either contains a digitally encoded media stream (using a specific format) or a data reference to the media stream located in another file. The ability to contain abstract data references for the media data, and the separation of the media data from the media offsets and the track edit lists means that QuickTime is particularly suited for editing, as it is capable of importing and editing in place (without data copying).

Other file formats that QuickTime supports natively (to varying degrees) include AIFF, WAV, DV-DIF, MP3, and MPEG program stream. With additional QuickTime Components, it can also support ASF, DivX Media Format, Flash Video, Matroska, Ogg, and many others.

QuickTime and MPEG-4(edit)

On February 11, 1998, the ISO approved the QuickTime file format as the basis of the MPEG‑4 file format.(citation needed) The MPEG-4 file format specification was created on the basis of the QuickTime format specification published in 2001.(16) The MP4 (.mp4) file format was published in 2001 as the revision of the MPEG-4 Part 1: Systems specification published in 1999 (ISO/IEC 14496-1:2001).(17)(18)(19) In 2003, the first version of MP4 format was revised and replaced by MPEG-4 Part 14: MP4 file format (ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003).(20) The MP4 file format was generalized into the ISO Base Media File Format ISO/IEC 14496-12:2004, which defines a general structure for time-based media files. It in turn is used as the basis for other multimedia file formats (for example 3GP, Motion JPEG 2000).(21)(22)(23)(24)(25) A list of all registered extensions for ISO Base Media File Format is published on the official registration authority website www.mp4ra.org. This registration authority for code-points in 'MP4 Family' files is Apple Computer Inc. and it is named in Annex D (informative) in MPEG-4 Part 12.(24)

By 2000, MPEG-4 formats became industry standards, first appearing with support in QuickTime 6 in 2002. Accordingly, the MPEG-4 container is designed to capture, edit, archive, and distribute media, unlike the simple file-as-stream approach of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.(26)

Profile support(edit)

QuickTime 6 added limited support for MPEG-4; specifically encoding and decoding using Simple Profile (SP). Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) features, like B-frames, were unsupported (in contrast with, for example, encoders such as XviD or 3ivx). QuickTime 7 supports the H.264 encoder and decoder.(27)

Container benefits(edit)

Because both MOV and MP4 containers can use the same MPEG-4 codecs, they are mostly interchangeable in a QuickTime-only environment. MP4, being an international standard, has more support. This is especially true on hardware devices, such as the Sony PSP and various DVD players; on the software side, most DirectShow / Video for Windows codec packs(28)(29) include a MP4 parser, but not one for MOV.

In QuickTime Pro's MPEG-4 Export dialog, an option called 'Passthrough' allows a clean export to MP4 without affecting the audio or video streams. QuickTime 7 now supports multi-channel AAC-LC and HE-AAC audio (used, for example, in the high-definition trailers on Apple's site(30)), for both .MOV and .MP4 containers.

Apple released the first version of QuickTime on December 2, 1991 as a multimedia add-on for System 6 and later. The lead developer of QuickTime, Bruce Leak, ran the first public demonstration at the May 1991 Worldwide Developers Conference, where he played Apple's famous 1984 advertisement in a window at 320×240 pixels resolution.

QuickTime 1.x(edit)

The original video codecs included:

the Animation codec, which used run-length encoding and better suited cartoon-type images with large areas of flat color

the Apple Video codec (also known as 'Road Pizza'), suited to normal live-action video.(31)

the Graphics codec, for 8-bit images, including ones that had undergone dithering

The first commercial project produced using QuickTime 1.0 was the CD-ROM From Alice to Ocean. The first publicly visible use of QuickTime was Ben & Jerry's interactive factory tour (dubbed The Rik & Joe Show after its in-house developers). The Rik and Joe Show was demonstrated onstage at MacWorld in San Francisco when John Sculley announced QuickTime.(32)

Apple released QuickTime 1.5 for Mac OS in the latter part of 1992. This added the SuperMac-developed Cinepak vector-quantization video codec (initially known as Compact Video). It could play video at 320×240 resolution at 30 frames per second on a 25 MHz Motorola 68040 CPU. It also added text tracks, which allowed for captioning, lyrics and other potential uses.

Apple contracted San Francisco Canyon Company to port QuickTime to the Windows platform.(33) Version 1.0 of QuickTime for Windows provided only a subset of the full QuickTime API, including only movie playback functions driven through the standard movie controller.

QuickTime 1.6 came out the following year. Version 1.6.2 first incorporated the 'QuickTime PowerPlug' which replaced some components with PowerPC-native code when running on PowerPC Macs.

QuickTime 2.x(edit)

Apple released QuickTime 2.0 for System Software 7 in June 1994—the only version never released for free. It added support for music tracks, which contained the equivalent of MIDI data and which could drive a sound-synthesis engine built into QuickTime itself (using a limited set of instrument sounds licensed from Roland), or any external MIDI-compatible hardware, thereby producing sounds using only small amounts of movie data.

Following Bruce Leak's departure to Web TV, the leadership of the QuickTime team was taken over by Peter Hoddie.

QuickTime 2.0 for Windows appeared in November 1994 under the leadership of Paul Charlton. As part of the development effort for cross-platform QuickTime, Charlton (as architect and technical lead), along with ace individual contributor Michael Kellner and a small highly effective team including Keith Gurganus, ported a subset of the Macintosh Toolbox to Intel and other platforms (notably, MIPS and SGI Unix variants) as the enabling infrastructure for the QuickTime Media Layer (QTML) which was first demonstrated at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in May 1996. The QTML later became the foundation for the Carbon API which allowed legacy Macintosh applications to run on the Darwin kernel in Mac OS X.(citation needed)

The next versions, 2.1 and 2.5, reverted to the previous model of giving QuickTime away for free. They improved the music support and added sprite tracks which allowed the creation of complex animations with the addition of little more than the static sprite images to the size of the movie. QuickTime 2.5 also fully integrated QuickTime VR 2.0.1 into QuickTime as a QuickTime extension. On January 16, 1997, Apple released the QuickTime MPEG Extension (PPC only) as an add-on to QuickTime 2.5, which added software MPEG-1 playback capabilities to QuickTime.

Lawsuit against San Francisco Canyon(edit)

In 1994, Apple filed suit against software developer San Francisco Canyon for intellectual property infringement and breach of contract.(34) Apple alleged that San Francisco Canyon had helped develop Video for Windows using several hundred lines of unlicensed QuickTime source code, which was subsequently unilaterally removed.(33) Microsoft and Intel were added to the lawsuit in 1995. The suit ended in a settlement in 1997.

QuickTime 3.x(edit)

The release of QuickTime 3.0 for Mac OS on March 30, 1998 introduced the now-standard revenue model of releasing the software for free, but with additional features of the Apple-provided MoviePlayer application that end-users could only unlock by buying a QuickTime Pro license code. Since the 'Pro' features were the same as the existing features in QuickTime 2.5, any previous user of QuickTime could continue to use an older version of the central MoviePlayer application for the remaining lifespan of Mac OS to 2002; indeed, since these additional features were limited to MoviePlayer, any other QuickTime-compatible application remained unaffected.

QuickTime 3.0 added support for graphics importer components that could read images from GIF, JPEG, TIFF and other file formats, and video output components which served primarily to export movie data via FireWire. Apple also licensed several third-party technologies for inclusion in QuickTime 3.0, including the Sorenson Video codec for advanced video compression, the QDesign Music codec for substantial audio compression, and the complete Roland Sound Canvas instrument set and GS Format extensions for improved playback of MIDI music files. It also added video effects which programmers could apply in real-time to video tracks. Some of these effects would even respond to mouse clicks by the user, as part of the new movie interaction support (known as wired movies).

QuickTime interactive(edit)

During the development cycle for QuickTime 3.0, part of the engineering team was working on a more advanced version of QuickTime to be known as QuickTime interactive or QTi. Although similar in concept to the wired movies feature released as part of QuickTime 3.0, QuickTime interactive was much more ambitious. It allowed any QuickTime movie to be a fully interactive and programmable container for media. A special track type was added that contained an interpreter for a custom programming language based on 68000 assembly language. This supported a comprehensive user interaction model for mouse and keyboard event handling based in part on the AML language from the Apple Media Tool.

The QuickTime interactive movie was to have been the playback format for the next generation of HyperCard authoring tool. Both the QuickTime interactive and the HyperCard 3.0 projects were canceled in order to concentrate engineering resources on streaming support for QuickTime 4.0, and the projects were never released to the public.

QuickTime 4.x(edit)

Apple released QuickTime 4.0 on June 8, 1999(35) for Mac OS 7.5.5 through 8.6 (later Mac OS 9) and Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. Three minor updates (versions 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and 4.0.3) followed.(36)It introduced features that most users now consider basic:(37)

Graphics exporter components, which could write some of the same formats that the previously introduced importers could read. (GIF support was omitted, possibly because of the LZW patent.)

Support for the QDesign Music 2 and MPEG-1 Layer 3 audio (MP3).

QuickTime 4 was the first version to support streaming. It was accompanied by the release of the free QuickTime Streaming Server version 1.0.

QuickTime 4 Player introduced brushed metal to the Macintosh user interface.

QuickTime 5.x(edit)

QuickTime 5 was one of the shortest-lived versions of QuickTime, released in April 2001 and superseded by QuickTime 6 a little over a year later. This version was the last to have greater capabilities under Mac OS 9 than under Mac OS X, and the last version of QuickTime to support Mac OS versions 7.5.5 through 8.5.1 on a PowerPC Mac and Windows 95. Version 5.0 was initially only released for Mac OS and Mac OS X on April 14, 2001, and version 5.0.1 followed shortly thereafter on April 23, 2001, supporting the classic Mac OS, Mac OS X, and Windows.(40) Three more updates to QuickTime 5 (versions 5.0.2, 5.0.4, and 5.0.5) were released over its short lifespan.

QuickTime 6 was initially available for Mac OS 8.6 – 9.x, Mac OS X (10.1.5 minimum), and Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP. Development of QuickTime 6 for Mac OS slowed considerably in early 2003, after the release of Mac OS X v10.2 in August 2002. QuickTime 6 for Mac OS continued on the 6.0.x path, eventually stopping with version 6.0.3.(45)

QuickTime 6.1 & 6.1.1 for Mac OS X v10.1 and Mac OS X v10.2 (released October 22, 2002)(46) and QuickTime 6.1 for Windows (released March 31, 2003)(47) offered ISO-Compliant MPEG-4 file creation and fixed the CAN-2003-0168 vulnerability.

Apple released QuickTime 6.2 exclusively for Mac OS X on April 29, 2003 to provide support for iTunes 4, which allowed AAC encoding for songs in the iTunes library.(48) (iTunes was not available for Windows until October 2003.)

On June 3, 2003, Apple released QuickTime 6.3, delivering the following:(49)

Initially released on April 29, 2005 in conjunction with Mac OS X v10.4 (for version 10.3.9 and 10.4.x), QuickTime 7.0 featured the following:(54)(55)

QuickTime Kit Framework (QTKit), a Cocoa framework for QuickTime.

After a couple of preview Windows releases,(57) Apple released 7.0.2 as the first stable release on September 7, 2005 for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Version 7.0.4, released on January 10, 2006 was the first universal binary version. But it suffered numerous bugs, including a buffer overrun, which is more problematic to most users.

Apple dropped support for Windows 2000 with the release of QuickTime 7.2 on July 11, 2007.(58) The last version available for Windows 2000, 7.1.6, contains numerous security vulnerabilities.(59) References to this version have been removed from the QuickTime site, but it can be downloaded from Apple's support section.(60) Apple has not indicated that they will be providing any further security updates for older versions. QuickTime 7.2 is the first version for Windows Vista.

Apple dropped support for Flash content in QuickTime 7.3, breaking content that relied on Flash for interactivity, or animation tracks. Security concerns seem to be part of the decision.(61) Flash flv files can still be played in QuickTime if the free Perian plugin is added.

In QuickTime 7.3, a processor that supports SSE is required. QuickTime 7.4 does not require SSE. Unlike versions 7.2 and 7.3, QuickTime 7.4 cannot be installed on Windows XP SP1 system (its setup program checks if Service Pack 2 is installed).

If you are already using port 5000, or you want to run multiple localregistries to separate areas of concern, you can customize the registry’sport settings. This example runs the registry on port 5001 and also names itregistry-test. Remember, the first part of the -p value is the host portand the second part is the port within the container. Within the container, theregistry listens on port 5000 by default.

If you want to change the port the registry listens on within the container, youcan use the environment variable REGISTRY_HTTP_ADDR to change it. This commandcauses the registry to listen on port 5001 within the container:

Customize the storage location

By default, your registry data is persisted as a docker volumeon the host filesystem. If you want to store your registry contents at a specificlocation on your host filesystem, such as if you have an SSD or SAN mounted intoa particular directory, you might decide to use a bind mount instead. A bind mountis more dependent on the filesystem layout of the Docker host, but more performantin many situations. The following example bind-mounts the host directory/mnt/registry into the registry container at /var/lib/registry/.

Customize the storage back-end

By default, the registry stores its data on the local filesystem, whether youuse a bind mount or a volume. You can store the registry data in an Amazon S3bucket, Google Cloud Platform, or on another storage back-end by usingstorage drivers. For more information, seestorage configuration options.

Run an externally-accessible registry

Running a registry only accessible on localhost has limited usefulness. Inorder to make your registry accessible to external hosts, you must first secureit using TLS.

Get a certificate

These examples assume the following:

Use an intermediate certificate

A certificate issuer may supply you with an intermediate certificate. In thiscase, you must concatenate your certificate with the intermediate certificate toform a certificate bundle. You can do this using the cat command:

Run the registry as a service

Swarm services provide several advantages overstandalone containers. They use a declarative model, which means that you definethe desired state and Docker works to keep your service in that state. Servicesprovide automatic load balancing scaling, and the ability to control thedistribution of your service, among other advantages. Services also allow you tostore sensitive data such as TLS certificates insecrets.

The storage back-end you use determines whether you use a fully scaled serviceor a service with either only a single node or a node constraint.

If you use a distributed storage driver, such as Amazon S3, you can use afully replicated service. Each worker can write to the storage back-endwithout causing write conflicts.

If you use a local bind mount or volume, each worker node writes to itsown storage location, which means that each registry contains a differentdata set. You can solve this problem by using a single-replica service and anode constraint to ensure that only a single worker is writing to the bindmount.

The following example starts a registry as a single-replica service, which isaccessible on any swarm node on port 80. It assumes you are using the sameTLS certificates as in the previous examples.

Load balancing considerations

One may want to use a load balancer to distribute load, terminate TLS orprovide high availability. While a full load balancing setup is outside thescope of this document, there are a few considerations that can make the processsmoother.

The most important aspect is that a load balanced cluster of registries mustshare the same resources. For the current version of the registry, this meansthe following must be the same:

Differences in any of the above cause problems serving requests.As an example, if you’re using the filesystem driver, all registry instancesmust have access to the same filesystem root, onthe same machine. For other drivers, such as S3 or Azure, they should beaccessing the same resource and share an identical configuration.The HTTP Secret coordinates uploads, so also must be the same acrossinstances. Configuring different redis instances works (at the timeof writing), but is not optimal if the instances are not shared, becausemore requests are directed to the backend.

Important/Required HTTP-Headers

Getting the headers correct is very important. For all responses to anyrequest under the “/v2/” url space, the Docker-Distribution-API-Versionheader should be set to the value “registry/2.0”, even for a 4xx response.This header allows the docker engine to quickly resolve authentication realmsand fallback to version 1 registries, if necessary. Confirming this is setupcorrectly can help avoid problems with fallback.

In the same train of thought, you must make sure you are properly sending theX-Forwarded-Proto, X-Forwarded-For, and Host headers to their “client-side”values. Failure to do so usually makes the registry issue redirects to internalhostnames or downgrading from https to http.

A properly secured registry should return 401 when the “/v2/” endpoint is hitwithout credentials. The response should include a WWW-Authenticatechallenge, providing guidance on how to authenticate, such as with basic author a token service. If the load balancer has health checks, it is recommendedto configure it to consider a 401 response as healthy and any other as down.This secures your registry by ensuring that configuration problems withauthentication don’t accidentally expose an unprotected registry. If you’reusing a less sophisticated load balancer, such as Amazon’s Elastic LoadBalancer, that doesn’t allow one to change the healthy response code, healthchecks can be directed at “/”, which always returns a 200 OK response.

Except for registries running on secure local networks, registries should alwaysimplement access restrictions.

You may need to build your local registry’s data volume on a connectedhost where you can run docker pull to get any images which are availableremotely, and then migrate the registry’s data volume to the air-gappednetwork.

Certain images, such as the official Microsoft Windows base images, are notdistributable. This means that when you push an image based on one of theseimages to your private registry, the non-distributable layers are notpushed, but are always fetched from their authorized location. This is finefor internet-connected hosts, but not in an air-gapped set-up.

You can configure the Docker daemon to allow pushing non-distributable layers to private registries.This is only useful in air-gapped set-ups in the presence ofnon-distributable images, or in extremely bandwidth-limited situations.You are responsible for ensuring that you are in compliance with the terms ofuse for non-distributable layers.

Edit the daemon.json file, which is located in /etc/docker/ on Linuxhosts and C:ProgramDatadockerconfigdaemon.json on Windows Server.Assuming the file was previously empty, add the following contents:

The value is an array of registry addresses, separated by commas.

Save and exit the file.

Restart Docker.

Restart the registry if it does not start automatically.

When you push images to the registries in the list, theirnon-distributable layers are pushed to the registry.

Warning: Non-distributable artifacts typically have restrictions onhow and where they can be distributed and shared. Only use this featureto push artifacts to private registries and ensure that you are incompliance with any terms that cover redistributing non-distributableartifacts.

How to Install Old OS X on Your Mac

Although you might think that going back to the old macOS is not possible by looking at the App Store Updates tab, it’s actually quite easy to do. In this article, we’ll take you through everything you need to download and install an old OS X on your Mac.

Prepare your Mac first

Make sure you are ready to downgrade your operating system by checking in with what version of OS X you already have and ensuring you have enough hard drive room to download the older version. Clicking the apple in the top left corner of your desktop and selecting About This Mac will allow you to see what OS X version you are currently running. Tabbing over to Storage will let you know how much disk space you have available. You’ll need around around eight gigabytes free depending on which macOS you downgrade to.

Even if you do have enough space, it’s a good idea to clean your computer before installing the desired operating system. You can, of course, do so manually by deleting unused files and uninstalling old software to free up disk space. Depending on how tidy you are, this might take quite a bit of time.

To make things easy, use a specialized app like CleanMyMac, which will quickly free up space by detecting unused apps and large files, and offering to completely delete them, with all their hidden corresponding files, in one quick click.

What if I can’t find the version I want in the app store?

Alternative sources for downloading macOS

If you can’t find the version you want from Apple, ask a friend who is running the macOS you’re looking for to make a copy of the installer file for you. Downloading a .dmg file from a torrent site may seem a quick solution, but it means risking your security. Alternatively, you could hit up your nearest Apple Store. They will likely have image files of all the different versions of the software and help you install it right there as well.

Install the macOS

If you download the file from the App Store, the installer will start immediately. Follow the prompts and be prepared to restart your computer. If you acquire the installer from another source, just downloading the file will not install the OS X right away on your Mac, you’ll need to find the file in your Downloads or Applications folder, then open and run the installer from the downloaded file.

I can’t download an old version of Mac OS X

A downgrade is different than an upgrade. When you try to downgrade macOS, the installer may not launch right away depending on which versions of macOS you are moving between. If your installer does not launch, or you get an error message that reads: “This copy of the ‘Install OS X’ application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X,” you’ll need to use a bootable USB or external drive to work around this problem.

Get a bootable drive with OS X

Creating a bootable USB or a bootable drive is not complicated. You’ll need an external drive with enough space to hold your desired OS X on it and a basic familiarity with Terminal, Apple’s command line interface.

If you’re uncomfortable using Terminal to execute basic commands, use an app like Disk Drill to help create a boot drive. Whether you use Terminal or Disk Drill, our guide on creating a bootable installer will walk you through all the necessary steps.

Remove the old OS X

Once your drive is prepared with your bootable version of OS X, erase the unwanted version. After you restart your computer, press and hold Command + R. When you enter the macOS Utilities screen, navigate to Disk Utility, click continue, and find your Startup Disk. Tab to the Erase page and name the file you want erased (e.g. macOS High Sierra). Then select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the dropdown menu. Hit Erase and quit out of Disk Utility. This will return you to the OS X Utilities selector.

Install the bootable version of OS X

If you used Disk Drill for creating your bootable drive, a window will prompt your actions for using the install disk you made. But if you created your own using Terminal, use OS X Utilities Selector and find Reinstall OS X. Find and select your install disk with your bootable version of your preferred macOS, and click continue through to the license agreement. Once you agree, you should be prompted by the installer. Once the installation is completed, your computer should restart. If it does not restart itself, make sure you restart it normally. The downgrade should be complete!

As you can see, downgrading your OS X is not as dreadful as you might think, especially if you use helper apps like CleanMyMac, Get Backup Pro, and Disk Drill — all of which are available for a free trial on Setapp. So downgrade away!

Install Xcode and the Xcode Command Line Tools

Install MacPorts for your version of the Mac operating system:

Installing MacPorts

MacPorts version 2.6.4 is available in various formats for download and installation (note, if you are upgrading to a new major release of macOS, see the migration info page):

“pkg” installers for Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra, for use with the macOS Installer. This is the simplest installation procedure that most users should follow after meeting the requirements listed below. Installers for legacy platforms Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger are also available.

In source form as either a tar.bz2 package or a tar.gz one for manual compilation, if you intend to customize your installation in any way.

Git clone of the unpackaged sources, if you wish to follow MacPorts development.

The selfupdate target of the port(1) command, for users who already have MacPorts installed and wish to upgrade to a newer release.

Checksums for our packaged downloads are contained in the corresponding checksums file.

The public key to verify the detached GPG signatures can be found under the attachments section on jmr's wiki page. (Direct Link).

Please note that in order to install and run MacPorts on macOS, your system must have installations of the following components:

Apple's Xcode Developer Tools (version 12.2 or later for Big Sur, 11.3 or later for Catalina, 10.0 or later for Mojave, 9.0 or later for High Sierra, 8.0 or later for Sierra, 7.0 or later for El Capitan, 6.1 or later for Yosemite, 5.0.1 or later for Mavericks, 4.4 or later for Mountain Lion, 4.1 or later for Lion, 3.2 or later for Snow Leopard, or 3.1 or later for Leopard), found at the Apple Developer site, on your Mac operating system installation CDs/DVD, or in the Mac App Store. Using the latest available version that will run on your OS is highly recommended, except for Snow Leopard where the last free version, 3.2.6, is recommended.

Apple's Command Line Developer Tools can be installed on recent OS versions by running this command in the Terminal:

Older versions are found at the Apple Developer site, or they can be installed from within Xcode back to version 4. Users of Xcode 3 or earlier can install them by ensuring that the appropriate option(s) are selected at the time of Xcode's install ('UNIX Development', 'System Tools', 'Command Line Tools', or 'Command Line Support').

Xcode 4 and later users need to first accept the Xcode EULA by either launching Xcode or running:

(Optional) The X11 windowing environment for ports that depend on the functionality it provides to run. You have multiple choices for an X11 server:

Install the xorg-server port from MacPorts (recommended).

The XQuartz Project provides a complete X11 release for macOS including server and client libraries and applications. It has however not been updated since 2016.

Apple's X11.app is provided by the “X11 User” package on older OS versions. It is always installed on Lion, and is an optional installation on your system CDs/DVD with previous OS versions.

macOS Package (.pkg) Installer

The easiest way to install MacPorts on a Mac is by downloading the pkg or dmg for Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard or Tiger and running the system's Installer by double-clicking on the pkg contained therein, following the on-screen instructions until completion.

This procedure will place a fully-functional and default MacPorts installation on your host system, ready for usage. If needed your shell configuration files will be adapted by the installer to include the necessary settings to run MacPorts and the programs it installs, but you may need to open a new shell for these changes to take effect.

The MacPorts “selfupdate” command will also be run for you by the installer to ensure you have our latest available release and the latest revisions to the “Portfiles” that contain the instructions employed in the building and installation of ports. After installation is done, it is recommended that you run this step manually on a regular basis to to keep your MacPorts system always current:

At this point you should be ready to enjoy MacPorts!

Source Installation

If on the other hand you decide to install MacPorts from source, there are still a couple of things you will need to do after downloading the tarball before you can start installing ports, namely compiling and installing MacPorts itself:

“cd” into the directory where you downloaded the package and run “tar xjvf MacPorts-2.6.4.tar.bz2” or “tar xzvf MacPorts-2.6.4.tar.gz”, depending on whether you downloaded the bz2 tarball or the gz one, respectively.

Build and install the recently unpacked sources:

cd MacPorts-2.6.4

./configure && make && sudo make install

Optionally:

cd ../

rm -rf MacPorts-2.6.4*

These steps need to be perfomed from an administrator account, for which “sudo” will ask the password upon installation. This procedure will install a pristine MacPorts system and, if the optional steps are taken, remove the as of now unnecessary MacPorts-2.6.4 source directory and corresponding tarball.

To customize your installation you should read the output of “./configure --help | more” and pass the appropriate options for the settings you wish to tweak to the configuration script in the steps detailed above.

You will need to manually adapt your shell's environment to work with MacPorts and your chosen installation prefix (the value passed to configure's --prefix flag, defaulting to /opt/local):

Add $(prefix)/bin and $(prefix)/sbin to the start of your PATH environment variable so that MacPorts-installed programs take precedence over system-provided programs of the same name.

If a standard MANPATH environment variable already exists (that is, one that doesn't contain any empty components), add the $(prefix)/share/man path to it so that MacPorts-installed man pages are found by your shell.

For Tiger and earlier only, add an appropriate X11 DISPLAY environment variable to run X11-dependent programs, as Leopard takes care of this requirement on its own.

Lastly, you need to synchronize your installation with the MacPorts rsync server:

Upon completion MacPorts will be ready to install ports!

It is recommended to run the above command on a regular basis to keep your installation current. Type “man port” at the command line prompt and/or browse over to our Guide to find out more information about using MacPorts. Help is also available.

Git Sources

If you are developer or a user with a taste for the bleeding edge and wish for the latest changes and feature additions, you may acquire the MacPorts sources through git. See the Guide section on installing from git.

Selfupdate

If you already have MacPorts installed and have no restrictions to use the rsync networking protocol (tcp port 873 by default), the easiest way to upgrade to our latest available release, 2.6.4, is by using the selfupdate target of the port(1) command. This will both update your ports tree (by performing a sync operation) and rebuild your current installation if it's outdated, preserving your customizations, if any.

Other Platforms

Running on platforms other than macOS is not the main focus of The MacPorts Project, so remaining cross-platform is not an actively-pursued development goal. Nevertheless, it is not an actively-discouraged goal either and as a result some experimental support does exist for other POSIX-compliant platforms such as *BSD and GNU/Linux.

The full list of requirements to run MacPorts on these other platforms is as follows (we assume you have the basics such as GCC and X11):

Tcl (8.4 or 8.5), with threads.

mtree for directory hierarchy.

rsync for syncing the ports.

cURL for downloading distfiles.

SQLite for the port registry.

GNUstep (Base), for Foundation (optional, can be disabled via configure args).

OpenSSL for signature verification, and optionally for checksums. libmd may be used instead for checksums.
