Guys... the girl has trauma. She's hyperaware of male attention, no matter if it's negative or positive. To the point where she purposefully makes herself unattractive by their standards to avoid any attention. She grew up surrounded by poverty, crime, and desperation. She grew up watching women resort to having to become a SW to feed them self. And she watched men act in a brutal and disgusting way towards women. She will very likely rebuff Jinshis advances for a long time. Because in her mind, men often only see women as objects for two things. What im trying to say is she is aware. She's hyperaware of male attention due to her upbringing in a pleasure district.

Around 4 years ago, when I started reading the manga, I did it precisely because of the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi, everything else being so good was just a bonus. People shipping them is literally what is expected, I don't see why some think it is a problem.

Okay, I feel like I need to say this: People have the right to like Apothecary diaries for the romance. The romance aspect is an important part of the story even if it's not just a romance and people are allowed to like it because of it.

And it's not because of the romance that people are not understanding the political plot. It's mostly because they are not paying attention (or if I want to be nice, because the anime didn't explain all of it yet)..

Maomao and Jinshi are the central relationship of the show/manga/light novel. It is going to be romantic and it is a slow burn. People enjoying that shouldn't ruin your own viewing.

Personally, I imagine the circles as a part of a larger motive that goes around the edges, for example, like what you would see in traditional clothing from slavic people. Something like this, but with circles:

I used to wear authentic clothes with patterns like these and they can be heavy, but it is more because of the material they are made of (wool in my case). The modernized versions I wear these days are still embroidered, but not really heavier than normal clothing. Now I am a big fan of the concept, but I am also biased😅

Imagine reading/watching Apothecary Diaries with your eyes close and truly believing Jinshi “grew up pampered” because “as soon as he cried everyone was there to calm him unlike MaoMao who had a terrible childhood”.

They “rushed” to calm him because those were the same people causing his tears. They took away everything he held precious to “teach him to never get attached to anything”. It’s extremely similar to MaoMao’s “I learned not to show emotions bcs no one would help me”.

He learned to hide/not show his emotions because if he did, people would take away anything he held dear. Even as an adult, everyone is very explicitly telling him to hide away MaoMao.

He was also emotionally neglected as a kid, but people don’t wanna admit it for god knows what reason.
