T'is the end of Colin Week. I cry, but I have loved so much having an excuse to yap about my absolute favorite character, and I want to thank the mods for giving me said opportunity! He is my darling angel boy, my crumbly croissant, my buttery biscuit, my scrumptious crumpet. I will always love him
Day 8 focuses on Colin and Penelope's friendship, and I'm grateful for that fact, because sometimes I think their friendship can be considered secondary in the fanbase or storyline, overshadowed by the romantic hopes and outcome of their relationship. But their friendship is so important to me, and the reason why I got so invested in them in the first place. I've found that, very often, there's almost a feeling of. . .resentment, or disappointment that the friendship was built up first. All those 'how could he not see what's right in front of him!?' miss the point. The friendship is the HEART of it all!!! The friendship is, arguably, the best part. The 'I like you' head to their 'I love you' tails (tales. Haha. Get it? Ba dum tiss)
Colin has always appreciated Penelope as a person first and foremost. In an era when men are expected to see women in only one of three categories: irrelevant, familial, or potential partners, Colin breaks the mold. He admires and cares for Penelope as a human being and a peer, an equal. She is not irrelevant wall dressing, as she has felt other men have seen her as, to the point where they ignore what she's saying even when she's speaking directly to them (such as in season 2), or a familial connection- despite what Marina said, Colin never saw Penelope the way he did Hyacinth or Eloise or Daphne. And no, in Seasons 1 and 2, Colin did not see Penelope as a suitor would.
Instead, Colin saw Penelope for who she was with no labels attached and no expectation or pressure: a witty, intelligent, dreamer, like he was. He listened to Penelope, laughed at her jokes. He found her in corners and ballrooms, he specifically asks her what she's thinking. He shows Penelope he values her, and he tells Penelope he values her.
And, in no particular order, some of my favorite friendship scenes between them are-
1: First Dance, Vauxhall, Season 1
Colin approaches Penelope, surprising her by doing so, and when she nervously says she didn't know he'd be there, he disarms her with a joke 'Sorry to disappoint'. He listens and is charmed by the fact that she's pleased with her dress, it's clear he agrees with her that it's pretty, and then when Cressida shows up and spills water on said dress, Colin, knowing how much Penelope loved it and was feeling good, refuses to let negativity cloud her night. He gives Cressida the cut direct, an outward snub, and offers Pen his hand to go dance. He chooses Penelope not just over Cressida- but over propriety itself.
They have FUN. They laugh and spin and he really hams it up for her. A night that could have ended horribly instead ends with Penelope feeling cared for and seen. Colin was a good friend to her, and that's what turned her night around.
2: Season 1, the Marina conversation.
When Penelope comes to Colin to tell him that Marina loves someone else, when you look at it through a lens of friendship, this is actually a really wonderful scene. This is Penelope coming to Colin to put agency in his hands, and Colin listening to Penelope explicitly. I know a lot of people treat this as a 'he doesn't listen to her' but come on, he DOES. He completely does. When she tells him that Marina loved someone else, Colin's response is directly to what she told him. He doesn't dismiss her, he doesn't scoff it off. He tells her it's okay because he has no room to judge someone who's loved someone else. That's a super healthy response from him!! Colin Bridgerton, my green flag man. Come on, Colin's a virgin in this season. He compares his experiences to Marina because he thinks they're on even ground. He says he's flirted with women before, so why should he hold the same against Marina? Colin's not purposefully misconstruing what Penelope is telling him. He's listening to her. He doesn't KNOW she means that Marina is pregnant. He thinks she's a virgin who can't drive just like he and Penelope are!
(Also, I think with Colin read as an ND character, it makes complete sense that he doesn't 'read between the lines' like people so badly want him to. She told him something, he listened to the something, he responded directly to the something.) More importantly, he validates the fact that she came to him. He takes her hand, he tells her she's very good. He APPRECIATES that she came to speak with him. A lesser man might find it irritating that she wanted to get in his business or even get angry. Not Colin. Colin has such deep admiration for Penelope, and values their connection. He even says so later on, that she was just trying to protect his heart. He recognizes this moment as Penelope being a good friend to him, as being in his corner even at the expense of her friendship to her cousin, and he wants her to know he is grateful for that. It's a beautiful moment of friendship for the two of them.
3: "You are special to me" Season 2
I'll say it. That scene had me in a CHOKEHOLD. It grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go. I know it's taken as a very romantic line, and it is, okay, it IS, but also from a platonic standpoint, god, what a validation. Friendships CAN be romantic, and love is more than just kisses between spouses. She thanks him for looking out for her family and he makes it CLEAR that he didn't do it for her family. He did it for HER. This is him affirming that he'll always be in her corner. That he's there for her. That he'll stand up for her and defend her and stick his neck out for her. Not because he wants anything back. Not because he's trying to woo her. Not because he wants sex, or a marriage. Not because she's Eloise's friend. But because she is HIS. His friend, his loved one, a piece of his heart. That he appreciates and cares about her as a human being, and that their connection is deep and unyielding. I'm gnawing on my own floorboards
4: "You've given up women?" "For the time being." "I. . .am a woman." "You are. . .Pen. You are my friend. You do not count." Season 2
This scene is used SO. OFTEN. to bash on Colin, but that's because we as the audience see it from a perspective of dashed romance instead of for the beautiful declaration of caring it really is.
Colin is HEARTBROKEN in Season 2. He's depressed. He's been tripping balls in Cyprus and getting high under a full moon to contemplate a blade of grass to try to distract himself from how utterly sad he is. His first engagement in Season 1 ended up in a public humiliation for him, and the woman he thought he could have a future with had been lying to him the whole time. It's his first taste of heartache. It's bitter. So he distances himself from any further possibility of such.
But he can't distance himself from Penelope. Penelope is MORE than a potential partner, mind you. She is his friend. She is his confidant. She is smart, and she is warm, and she is kind. He *wants* to be around her, and he trusts her!!! He trusts her more than he trusts anyone else. He trusts her with the truth, he trusts her with his vulnerability, he trusts her with his perspective, his jokes, his insecurities. This is not him dismissing Penelope. This is him AFFIRMING Penelope. Affirming her permanent place in his life and in his heart. This is him saying 'no matter what happens, no matter WHO happens, you will always rise above it for me. I could never give you up.'
And I know Penelope was hurt because she got her hopes up about being Mrs. Colin Bridgerton, but I just wanna grab her hands and go 'Penelope, please. Take the W.'
5: Colin's apology, Season 3
Colin Bridgerton is the only mofo on this whole show who ACTUALLY knows how to apologize, I stand on that TEN! TOES! DOWN!!!!!
Everything about his apology is perfect. I need him to teach masterclasses. I need him to do a TED!Talk. I need him to publish self help books on this topic entirely. A lot of people say that his apology sounds like a love declaration and they're right! It is! It just isn't a romantic one. But that doesn't make it any less of a love declaration?
"It pains me to see you upset" "I am not the man I was last year when I spoke such callous words about you" "Thank you for seeing me" "I am not ashamed of you: The opposite is true, in fact. I seek you out at every social assembly because I know you will lift my spirits and help me see the world in new ways" "If a husband is what you seek, let me help you" "I am PROUD to call you my very good friend."
I want to kiss him clean on the mouth. Is there ANYTHING sexier than a man who appreciates a woman just for being herself? He acknowledges how he hurt her, he compliments her, he offers to repair the harm he caused and rebuild their connection through spending time together. I'm wailing. I'm sobbing. I'm howling at the moon.
6: "I'm certain you'll find your purpose one day. Everyone must, eventually." Season 2
This is a scene that focuses more on Penelope's friendship with Colin and how she shows that than how Colin does. Now, I'll be honest here and say that I notice Colin is actually the one who reaches out to her and shows his hands to Penelope more than she does to him, which is to say: in their friendship, Colin is the one who affirms Penelope, and Penelope is rarely the one to affirm him. Nonetheless, this scene is a glimpse into Penelope pouring into their relationship by being honest and vulnerable. It is one of the few moments where she isn't just deflecting back to him, (I mean, he has to ask her how she is when they meet at the races, presumably because whilst she responded to most of his letters, she didn't really open up to him) but is letting him in. She's letting him see her. She's letting him see how much she trusts him.
Colin is downtrodden, he's feeling low on himself. He's standing by himself, drinking from a flask. It's important to note that Penelope finds HIM this time, instead of Colin finding her. She checks in with him, asking if he's having a celebratory drink because he's found what he's looking for, and he responds "Only if what I'm looking for can be found at the bottom of this flask", she shifts gears, tells him that eventually, he WILL find his purpose. But Colin, always hungry to know Penelope's perspective, asks if she's found hers. She relates to him, and tells him of course she hasn't.
She then goes on and explains how grand her purpose will be, how it will encourage her to be brave and witty, take her away from the watchful eyes of her Mama, how it will set her free. (Sidenote, connecting this to Season 3, as much as I wish we didn't get Colin's whole 'my purpose is Penelope' thing as his speech and that the book declaration is SO. MUCH. BETTER, rewatching THIS scene, I realize, okay, maybe Colin has said that his purpose is Penelope. . .but Penelope is also saying HER purpose is Colin. HE encourages her to be brave and witty. HE takes her away from the watchful eyes of her mama. HE sets her free. I really needed to rewatch that scene to have a better sense of the reciprocity the two of them have in that aspect, so thank you Colin Week!)
But I digress. When he asks her what could possibly measure up to all that (YOU!!! Colin, YOU measure up to all that!!!), she affirms him by saying that they need their fantasies to face the realities of the world. And he recognizes that she's a dreamer like he is. That she doesn't scoff off his follies, like his family can, like Marina did, like he's been trying to do to himself, but that she sees them, and that she appreciates them about him.
No wonder he twists the words Marina said to him into "You care for me. That you'll never forsake me." That isn't what MARINA said it him. It's what Penelope did.
7: Running after Penelope when Cressida rips her dress, Season 3.
This one's short, but in that ball, even though everyone was looking at her, there is one person and one person only who actually SAW her. And that person is Colin. Penelope shows up, looking like the belle of the ball, and she feels beautiful. When she's talking to Debling (ugh, Debling. all my homies hate Debling) and Cressida comes to step on her dress and rip it, all he does is say it was a mistake and then fuck off into the distance
But what does Colin do?
He sees Penelope running, clearly distraught, and he goes after her. He cuts his conversations short, he peaces out, and he immediately goes to find her. I swear this guy has Spidey Sense but for Penelope. Pen Perception. She's upset at him, sharp like she's never been before, but he's still gentle with her. He tries to compliment her (that's a charming dress), he affirms her (you are not a spinster), he checks in with her (is something wrong, Pen? Between us, I mean), and he says he misses her. Actually, he says "I miss you". Which is a very important distinction. "I miss you" is ACTIVE. "I've missed you" is past, is passive. I miss you implies still, always, not just before.
Sure, she cuts him down. Sure, she projects onto him all her own insecurities and that she embarrasses him (untrue) and that she's a laughing stock (not how he sees her), and she leaves, but the fact that he follows her out in the first place, what he says to her, and then that he comes to her the NEXT DAY to apologize, that's all showing her how important she is to him, and the importance their connection has. He doesn't get angry, he doesn't get mean. He treats her with the same respect and tenderness and understanding he always has. I will forever love him.
And I want to give one last, final moment of shine to Luke Newton for how he delivers these scenes. In all these scenes of genuine friendship, Luke also builds in kernels beyond the surface and beyond the lines themselves to really make these scenes as tender and feeling as they can be. The 'you are Pen, you do not count' scene could have been done so dismissively, but instead he delivers the lines in such a warm and tender way. The 'I miss you', spoken more softly. The expression on his face when he looks between Cressida and Penelope at Vauxhall, how he laughs and spins her around, how affectionately he says 'Pen', his tone of voice, his body language. Flowers to Luke, and flowers to friendship.

Colin Week Day 8: Polin/Lukola Besties For Life!
For the last entry for Colin Week, I'm gonna answer all the questions. :)))
Favourite Polin moments:
All of it. Whenever they are together, they are shown to be their true selves, Colin as "kind, feeling, occasionally excitable" man Pen loves and Penelope as witty, clever, brave, always there for support, observant and loveable woman Colin loves. They represent the moon, as they seek each other and be their true selves at night. Hence why I drew them as Pokemon, Umbreon for Colin and Jigglypuff for Pen shown below.
But the scene where they are laughing together over a dead horse is adorable. These awkward turtleducks and ducklings.

Hopes and dreams for Polin together:
They should be in the same room together, probably their bedroom, writing and brainstorming ideas. I wanna see the quiet and lovely moments between them as husband and wife, either with their child or not. I also wanna see them... Being all lovey dovey idiots. :)))
Also, Colin and Pen being spies to help Benedict identify Sophie. They can be the love therapists to persuade Benedict to choose his heart over society, that is choosing to be with Sophie regardless of class status over expectations as nobles. Like what Daphne did to Anthony when choosing Kate over Edwina (S2), and Kanthony did to Colin when choosing to love and marry Pen regardless of conflict over being a prideful dumbass (S3).
Finally....
Favourite Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton moments:
All of it! They are themselves when they are in interviews together, supporting and hyping each other. They are very comfortable with each other, with 5 years of being besties. I wish I have that kind of friendship. My favourite awkward turtleducks and awkward ducklings.
(They also embody the ducklings from my beloved K-Drama, Crash Landing On You, because they follow around being idiots together and will defend for their family, friends and their partners. Ducklings from CLOY and turtleducks from Avatar: the Last Airbender pictured below.)
And that is all for Colin Week this year, my first contribution. Now I have done my duty for my love for Colin Bridgerton. 🫡

Colin Week Day 6: Traveller and Salacious Author
I missed out on Day 6 due to adult life. So I'll just say it here, a day or two late. :)))
What I think Colin's books could be?
As a normal author, Colin would write about his travels, the experienced he sees that are either good, bad or encountered a conflict (like French Revolution and Colin has seen it all), the beautiful descriptions he explains and sketches of landscapes, buildings and other interests. In the show, I wanna see the progress of Colin's personal journey and more of his work (there's a lot more in the book, but lacking in the show).
As a pseudonym author, Colin would write smutty, salacious stories. Since he wrote some risqué passages that Pen read, I think he'll get even more money from that. 🤣 He won't use his real name, so he's gonna add a pseudonym so nobody (except Pen 😉) would know that he wrote obscene books. 🤣
So Colin would write multiple books, books about his travels using his real name that men would read, and books about salacious stories using his fake name that women would read. That boi is gonna be rich with the books he sold. 🤣

Colin Week Day 7: Luke Newton is Awesome!!!
What I like a Luke Newton? Gimme 5 minutes. Or 10 minutes. I got this! 😤. I also written something similar on Twitter, but I'll extend it here.
Favourite moments with any member with Luke:
All the cast members hanging out with Luke is adorable. Jonathan Bailey and Luke Thompson treating Luke Newton as their lil bro. Simone Ashley being supportive of him (but gives a knowing side eye everytime he's with Nicola 😏). Claudia Jessie treating him like a brother (I heard from an interview that she'll rather have him as a brother than a love interest. She ain't gonna kiss him haha 🤣). Florence and Will being so happy to hang out with Luke as their older brother in real life. Pretty much everybody enjoys hanging out with Luke.
But Luke Newton with Nicola Coughlan together is so dear to me (not because I ship them! I do not! It's not my business to know their private lives, but it is my business to smile everytime I see them together for official pics). They have a beautiful platonic male/female relationship, as colleagues and besties. Similar to my own friendship with a dear male friend of mine, when we were maths study buddies at uni and besties. I always cherish the memories, even when he returned back to his home country. (As context, my dear friend has the personality of Nicola Coughlan, except he is a bit reserved and my lil idiot, social wise. While I have the personality of Luke Newton, and I love hugs!).
This one below when Luke and Nicola were on the world tour together, first one in my home country, Australia, is the special one for me. Because booyah! Australia is finally mentioned! Except why Bowral?! That's too far from where I am. I live in a state just under New South Wales, and the capital city here is more popular than Sydney. 😒

What I like/love about Luke:
As what I mentioned previously above, my personality is 60% similar to him. So I feel content to see him representing for introverts struggling but passionate about life (yes Nicola too as I heard she is an introvert as well 🙂). Luke and I are both kind, friendly, shy, meek, curious, thoughtful and supportive. He's also my celeb crush. 😉
Career/role hopes for Luke:
Unrealistically, Luke Newton should start his side career of being the Pokemon Master in the Pokemon World Championships! To be the very best, like no one ever was! Unfortunately, I doubt he is a Pokemon fan. 😑 (He does play Fortnite though, so I'm gonna imagine he purchased the Zuko and Katara bundle for Avatar: the Last Airbender Fortnite edition).
Realistically, any role that suits him and excels him further in his recognition as an actor. He could be in any role and I'll root for him. I'll even be so giddy with excitement if he voices in a Studio Ghibli film (if they are planning for another movie); they are well known for hiring British actors to voice in these movies. But I'll see how it goes for him. :)))
What makes Luke the best Colin Bridgerton:
He allows me to see myself through him, an emotional and sensitive person with an uncertain purpose but is a romantic and determined to make things right. He also did help me understand that I'm a demisexual. Heh.
Finally, extra treatment for Luke:
As tribute for him, I'm gonna nickname my favourite Pokemon, Lucario (below), after Luke Newton in Pokemon Legends ZA! A worthy Pokemon for my celeb crush. (Also his name fits within the 12 character limit for naming Pokemon). I'm gonna start mega evolving my Lucario and have a Mega Luke Newton in my team! Because why not? :))
And that is the end of my Luke Newton is awesome analysis. :)))

Ok last thing for Luke Newton Appreciation Day for Colin Week:
Sometimes as a Luke fan, it’s easy to focus on the places where Luke is overlooked, so here’s a few examples of some of the cool things that he got out of S3:
Luke was nominated for a SAG award after co-leading the ensemble for Bridgerton S3, making him a 2 time SAG award nominated actor.

Luke was nominated for a TV Choice Award for his performance in Bridgerton as Best Actor.

Luke was named one of People Magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive

Luke made it to IMDBs list of most popular stars of 2024

Future projects I’d love to see Luke in:
A filmed musical adaptation. I can’t wait for Viana, but Luke is such a musical theater guy I’d like to see him in live action, singing and dancing. I’d know he’d kill it. My top choices are Hadestown as Orpheus or Dimitri in Anastasia.
An independent film. This isn’t really a genre thing, I just think Luke would be well suited to handle the festival circuit after watching his experience with the Bridgerton World Tour. An indie movie press junket might be more invested in talking to him about his character and acting choices over things like glow ups, and Luke would get the chance to lock in a little more.
I need him to be the muse of a kind of weird director who would do a 180 from Colin for him. Yorgos Lanthimos, Robert Eggers and Paul Thomas Anderson would do amazingly with him.
I also need him to work with female directors. The director of Shape of Things - Nicky Allpress- did right by Luke, and the episodes of Bridgerton S3 directed by Tricia Brock had some of the most loving shots of Luke of the entire season. Luke is made for the female gaze. I’m not giving up on him playing a romantic lead just because he’s done his season on Bridgerton either! Autumn de Wilde come get him!!!
I’d like to see him play a real dickish character in a comedy. He apparently played Warner in a Legally blonde to great reviews, so I know he has it in him!
Black Mirror. He would kill it, whatever they had him do.

Happy Colin Week! Is it really Day 7 already? Say it isn't so!
But this one is right up my alley: what I love about Luke Newton's depiction of Colin. I mean, damn, how much time you got? There is so much about the subtle choices Luke made to portray about Colin that just brought him to life for me. The acting decisions are clear and comprehensive. You can tell that Luke built Colin from the ground up.
From how his voice softens when he's playing Colin, to the specific fidgets Colin has, there's so much thoughtfulness he poured into his character. Luke had Colin fidget with his fingers, rock back and forth on his heels, when Luke's own fidgets are different- rubbing his lips, grabbing the backs of chairs, stimming by talking with his hands.
A lot of people very disrespectfully say that Luke wasn't even acting when he was playing Colin, and because he's been said to be the most like his character, it continues to be perpetuated, but Luke's acting of Colin is purposeful, and is not just a reflection of himself. It's a representation of how much he cares about his craft.
I think Luke brought such an unyielding, tender sensitivity to Colin that resonates with me and rounds Colin out so well. Colin doesn't feel like a character, in Luke's hands, but rather like a full, understandable, believable person. He's very different from his book counterpart, who is loved by Julia Quinn but no less a trope for it, and it shows. Colin in the show doesn't come across as a trope. He's less angry, more feeling. Less theatrical and more realistic. How he starts crying at the Lady Whistledown reveal instead of getting angry in the way one might expect. His decision to have Colin eating in the background of all his scenes. How he learned to fence with his right hand even though he's a lefty. How he delivers dry quips. How he can be cheeky but only with people he's comfortable with. The sweet, subtle dorkiness that he makes clear in Colin's mannerisms. His humor. I still giggle over his 'Yes, she's a very good acquaintance. . .of the family's. . .of course' and 'not even a dream' after he dreamed up smooch smooching Penelope in his very own rendition of a Pride and Prejudice love confession, mist and all.
And, god, his expressions. When he tells Penelope that charm can be taught and he's so unbelievably flirty and cute. Then when he's pining and distracted when she eats the cupcake. How he waits a beat and then asks Benedict 'is all well with you?' with such a little brother face. His flat 'no' expression of disapproval when they're telling John to throw rocks at Fran's window. How he has to swallow and hesitate when he tells Eloise that she's very lucky she hasn't been in love. And that's all just season 3!!! Don't get me started on his 'everyone says that [I'm Daphne's favorite' in season 1 or how cunty he was when he crossed his legs and told Anthony 'Why does anyone marry, brother? for love.', his 'have you ever visited a farm' delivery or how gentle he was when he said 'you are pen, you are my friend, you do not count', and how his cheeks smush when Benedict grabs him or how he raises his eyebrows when he's been a little shit.
The way he dances, smooth and steady, the decision with only using certain fingers to fix Penelope's dress (I mean, the man dominated the internet with that choice), the way he can make his eyes shine as if on demand. Bring those big, wet seal eyes this way, baby. How can anyone ever be mad at him???
The way he made deliberate choices for how he moved his body. In the mirror scene, he is ROLLING his hips, holding himself up on one arm. How he snaps his belt open. His O face. Jesus, his O face. It was so damn realistic it reminded me of people I've been intimate with myself, in real life. He always has Colin cupping the back of Penelope's head when they're kissing, showing us with actions how protective and tender Colin is. When he wears his brown coat, he walks in a way so that it whips around and billows behind him. In the carriage, he was on his knees for hours on that hard floor. I can't even kneel on a hard floor for like 10 minutes.
And then how he talks about Polin. Luke Newton GETS IT. Sometimes I swear he's the only one who fully gets it. When he says that Penelope gives him a sense of home. How it's a coming of age for both Colin and Penelope. How their dynamic shifts and it puts them on more level ground with one another, where he gets the chance to do the yearning. When he was constantly asked the same tired glow up questions and redirected from the superficial changing of the outside (and Luke Newton has always been hot, fight me) to how they had to do the internal work because that's where the real transformation happens.
How he takes his experience as a neurodivergent man and depicts Colin as one, too. Not exactly like him, but ND nonetheless. How he understands and empathizes with Colin, even when it seems like the writers and directors and fans themselves don't. How he cheers for Colin to find himself and happiness but doesn't excuse his actions.
And then, of course, how absolutely beautiful this man is. I mean, Jesus Christ spread thin and buttery on a cracker, he is all capital letters FINE. His soft, denim blue eyes? His adorable pointy little ears? His smile. That jawline. His curls. I was crushing on him all the way back in Season 1. What a babe.
Luke Newton popped his whole pussy when he played Colin Bridgerton. We were so, so lucky to have him.

For Luke Newton Appreciation Day:
Luke Newton and Lydia West
Am I the only one who would really like to see these two costar together in the future? I always love how British TV seems to have the same couple crews of actors who overlap, and with them both starring alongside Nicola Coughlan in Bridgerton and Big Mood, it would be fun to see them act alongside each other. It would be great to see Luke as a leading man in a drama that’s less flashy than Bridgerton and more grounded. It plays to his strengths as an actor with his believability, micro-expressions and subtle realism.

Colin Week Day 5: My favourite Colin look
Definitely the Pirate Colin one. He looks badass while greeting his family and chastising Eloise (potential dad Colin alert!), and looks like a ballerina princess while walking it and following Penelope around.

I'm pissed though that there is no Funko pop for this style on Colin. 😒
