i feel like the youth should be reminded that the point of shipping is not for a ship to become canon. the point of shipping is to collect all the canon crumbs like starved mice, run away cackling and make some fun little scenarios with them just for the hell of it.

The argument of whether Abigail was a ghost or a projection is limiting. When viewed through a metaphysical lens, we see that time itself is nonlinear everywhere except in material reality. This theme of temporal nonlinearity recurs throughout season three. In the process of dying, what many understand as the afterlife is not a distinct place, but a trance state, a timeless experience induced by chemicals in the brain. Consciousness in this state can encounter their mind's ideas of heaven, hell, or hauntings.
When a haunting is perceived, it appears to occur after death in the material realm, yet in actuality, it unfolds in the dying moment. Consciousness becomes less tethered to the physical world, magnetizing itself to a place or a person, a point of attachment. A ghost, then, is both an echo of a spirit and a projection of the mind. The astral realm is shaped by the subconscious; a thousand psychics might enter the same haunted house, each encountering something different, yet each experience remains real. In the astral, everything becomes malleable, shaped by the viewer’s perception. They tune into a particular frequency, Abigail, for instance, and in the absence of material evidence, the mind fills in the gaps. So, it is simultaneously a ghost and a projection.

Serri, I love you so much for this. Sometimes I have to work up to something when I get the feeling it's really going to hit.
love to see a random post where someone’s like “ok I’m finally gonna watch nbc Hannibal” because I know in my soul they’re either about to give up at the mushroom episode and move on with their lives like a regular person OR develop an all-consuming, bone-deep fixation that they will never fully recover from

Editing my reblog, the only way to travel...
I continue to believe that the way I first watched Hannibal was the best way possible, the whole thing over a course of a few days, sleeping-waking like a fever dream. Because of course I saw this episode and it did feel as if Abigail were really there at first. For one thing, she's wearing clothes that are in keeping with what her taste was developing into with Hannibal---that avant-garde denim jacket she was wearing in Mizumono is the last thing Alana would have gotten her (by which I mean Alana would never), and I've already said Hannibal had gotten her a red sweater to match his. This red leather she's wearing here is a bit of a Beverly nod too, but I didn't think about Will's ideas of how Abi would dress at the time, or how he would associate her with Bev. It's not established yet that she did die, we've seen Will's POV on her "visit" and "He knew just how to cut us" but no body bag zip. And so, the part where she and the priest look at each other hit me just right. The priest represents a point of view between the earth and beyond, and of course it's a supernatural horror trope for a priest to have this sort of perception too. The "What are you doing here" look, the suspicion and the sorrow -- Her responding look -- I have to lie on the floor.
It's also the first point of view that really makes Abigail look like a young adult of 19 or 20. If she'd survived, she would have aged, not remained a high school senior. She has acquired more of the poise that we began to see her try on for size in S1. Later in S3 we also see Hannibal continue initiating her in various ways, like the scene where she accepts her father by cutting his (?) cadaver's throat*. She wasn't just a prisoner in the basement, she was learning and growing, preparing for a new life.
What I got out of this episode is that a couple of things may be true at once. 1) Something real of Abigail remains connected to the world. It's not just Will's projection. 2) Will has surely been thinking for almost a year about how things might have been for her, living with Hannibal. He interprets the evidence. The new clothes, the time she spent bonding with Hannibal. So he levels her up in his mind as a companion, not a captive or a ward.
In any case, when she waves goodbye to him, she is whole, she is smiling, she is grown up, and she is free. I cry every time. It's not just Will letting go of her, it's Abigail letting go of him.
*there's no evidence that the cadaver is literally the body of Garrett Hobbs. It would have been easy for Hannibal to create the scenario for Abigail with the combination of a properly-dressed substitute and the drugs she's been using in her therapy, and it would do the job just as well if not better than uh, exhuming a skeleton.
in the first few episodes of season 3, will has hallucinations of abigail being alive and of having conversations with her and there's something really telling about how she keeps telling him to go to hannibal, keeps asking why he chose to betray hannibal even after he gave will a chance to come clean, the way she tells him going to find hannibal is worth it even after he left them to die
obviously those were will's thoughts and he couldn't handle the fact that he still wanted to go to hannibal, regretted betraying him despite knowing it should be wrong that he projected it all to abigail in his mind.
like it was easier for his mind to create a fantasy where she's the one who still wants to go to hannibal than to admit that it's what he really wants

also thinking about how it didn’t matter if will tried to kill hannibal in florence because hannibal was already set on eating him. but from will’s perspective it was happening because he pulled a knife on hannibal and not because hannibal loved him and had already settled on consuming him as an act of love and mourning for what hannibal thought could never be. will didn’t know hannibal was preparing to eat him as a way to cherish him completely and fully. he saw it as punishment and revenge and as a consequence for his actions. even after being told violence was not the answer to show someone you care and that things can be settled differently, he was met with violence. because their violence is so deeply woven with love and is as blurred as will and hannibal are.

there is no canon in fic but what you make of it, btw. will graham would never X, hannibal would never Y? miss me with that. the writer’s job is to make the reader believe they would X, Y, Z and beyond. one of my fav fics has them going to disneyworld. the other is will as a catboy. I’m obsessed with this t4t force masc fic. the only limit is imagination and skill!

Every time you guys say Will wrote a "paper" or a "thesis" or an "article" on insects, Hannibal possesses me because Will wrote the STANDARD MONOGRAPH on time of death. Do you know what a standard monograph is?! It's not some paper or thesis or article. It is a standalone, book-length work that focuses on a single, specialized topic. My man's work is referred to in training (!!!!) DO NOT joke about his intellectual prestige near me 😤
