Does a Journalist's Social Media Feed Affect or Predict News Coverage?
1. Does the journalist use Twitter for reporting, personal use, or both?
Abby Martin uses Twitter to express her opinions on the latest events going on around the world, as well as for reporting by informing her followers on the latest updates on current events.
2. Based on his/her number of followers, do you think the journalist has a strong following?
With over 121,000 followers I would say yes, she definitely has a large following. She has a huge following on YouTube as well with her show Breaking The Set.
3. Does the journalist’s Twitter feed indicate any type of bias in his or her reporting?
I would say there is some bias for sure, but nothing like knowingly fabricating stories or falsifying information to make a story more sensational. In fact, I think most journalists have some sort of bias in their reporting but are objective enough to not let it influence their stories as a whole.
4. Do you think the journalist’s use of social media enhances his or her reporting?
I believe it does. As mentioned earlier, she has a large following on twitter, YouTube and Facebook as well. She’s also an artist and has a website devoted to all of her work, which has been shown in several cities.
5. Give an example of a tweet that helped shape a news story he/she was reporting or covering.

great job!
Tumblr media
Does the journalist use Twitter for reporting, personal use, or both?
Richard Lawson is a Columnists and Critic for Vanity Fair who reviews television and films as well as covers news, gossip and entertainment. In my opinion, Richard Lawson uses Twitter for not only his personal use but for reporting as well.
Based on his/her number of followers, do you think the journalist has a strong following?
As of right now on Twitter, Richard Lawson has 40.5k followers. I do think he has a strong following because as a reporter he seems to always have the latest news in media, art and entertainment to celebrities, movie trailers, latest trending topics, actors and actresses.
Does the journalist’s Twitter feed indicate any type of bias in his or her reporting?
In Richard Lawson’s Twitter feeds, I do think there is some kind of indication of bias in his reports. His feeds show what he is specialized in covering which is mostly television, films, gossip news and entertainment. Some feeds he voices his opinion in a sarcastic way making others think different of his opinions and on the subjects he covers as well as other feeds are based upon what is going on (facts).
Do you think the journalist’s use of social media enhances his or her reporting? Give an example of a tweet that helped shape a news story he/she was reporting or covering.
So many people are users of social media and most use it to engage and connect with other users as well as follow different news sources with the latest trends and updates. Some people still choose reading a newspaper and some use technology in order to keep updated with what’s going on in the world. Social media can enhance journalists and there reports however, it can be misunderstood and misquoted leaving some journalists without a job just by leaving a comment.

Anderson Cooper
The journalist that I chose was Anderson Cooper. He has a very active and popular twitter account. He has 17.6K tweets along with 7.19 million followers. He is actively giving his twitter followers feed.
Twitter feed of Anderson Cooper is primarily used for professional. However, he has some personal tweets as well. Such as a shout out to his friend on an Oscar Nominee.  Many of his tweets are news stories. He reaches out on his twitter account and thanks the people that he have met. For example on Jan 26th he stated “such an honor to meet @norfolkPD K9 officers tonight.
Bases on his number of followers I do believe that he has a strong following. With 7.19 million followers I believe that he has a very strong following. I believe that he has such a good following because he is able to mix his professional life with great news stories. Also promoting on coming stories; with a mix of his personal life. He touches base on both. It is always nice to believe to connect with others other than just on a business level.
I do not believe that it shows a bias. I believe that he leads his followers with a question so that they are able to choose their own way.
I believe that his use of social media does enhance his reporting. For the reason being that he is always promoting when a story is going to be aired. Especially debates with the presidency campaign of 2016.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge of 2014 & Groundswell
The Ice Bucket Challenge that took place in 2014 was started by the Pete Frates after he was diagnoses with ALS. It was at that point that he gathered all of his family and friends together to help find a cure and bring attention to the disease. ALS has no cure but they are currently looking for cures.
The Challenge was spread all over the world. One of Pete’s goals was to get the attention of people like Bill Gates, he achieved that goal because he actually participated in the challenge. I had many friends and family participate in the challenge although I was never chosen!
Below are the nine reasons that a person a groundswell, relating to the ALS challenge!
1.  Keeping up friendships: Facebook is all about connecting with people. And with the ALS challenge starting on social media it was very easy for it to become viral via family and friends sharing it on each other’s timelines. It all started with one person making a video about ALS, dumping a cold bucket of ice water over their head and then challenging family and friends via social media to the same. It spread from there and became viral!
2.  Making new friends:  There is no doubt that social media is used to keep up with old friends but it’s also great for making new ones as well, and the ALS challenge proved to help build new relationships. With everyone coming together to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for ALS it’s a great environment for people to meet one another and potentially have a lifelong friendship.
3.  Succumbing to social pressure from existing friends:  I’m pretty sure that everyone all over the world felt the pressure of participating in the ALS challenge by friends and family. With as viral as it went it was impossible to not feel the personal pressure to make a video to support the challenge.
4.  Paying it forward: After participating in the ice bucket challenge there is nothing more entertaining than to watch your family and friends have to endure the same cold ice water to show support.
5.  The Altruistic impulse:  People love to help! And if they know they are helping try to find a cure for a deadly disease they will be more than likely to take part in the challenge.
6.  The prurient impulse: Some people love to just entertain others so they would jump on a chance to create a fun an entertaining video to help find a cure.
7.  The Creative impulse:  Everyone’s their own creative side, they can use that as a way to take this challenge and make it fun. They can put a creative spin on the video and make it their own.
8.  The validation impulse:  For quite a few people in this challenge, it was important for them to have validation
9.  The affinity impulse: I know that I had so many people on social media talking about the challenge, it was all over my feed! People asking if I had done it yet, or if anyone in my family had. It was becoming very clear that this was going to be going on for a while!

Ice Bucket Challenge and 9 Reasons for participation in a Groundswell.
ALS is a disease, commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease. It basically slowly deteriorates your ability to move parts of your body. So if you had ALS, you might have trouble moving your fingers all of a sudden, well eventually you won’t be able to move your fingers at all. And it spreads throughout your body and eventually you cannot talk or move on your own and eventually you cannot breath on your own. The Ice Bucket Challenge basically gives people a sense of what ALS is and how it feels. The ice water numbs your body and limits your movement temporarily, so the people get an idea of what it’s like. Plus, when you do the challenge you nominate others to do the challenge and that spreads the word around to pretty much everyone so that they will donate money to help the ALS cause. A lot of celebs were both doing the challenge and donating money. I think it is helping bring money and awareness to the disease despite the participant’s intent. It’s doing a lot of good. I always heard of the disease but before this challenge I never actually looked in to it.
Here are the nine reasons for a participating in a groundswell that apply to an Ice Bucket Challenger:
1-       Keeping up Friendships- the Ice Bucket Challenge was featured on social media causing it to go viral allowing friends and family to view, comment, and share and nominate others to do the challenge. This lead up to supporting friendships for those who are affected and have followed and shared the challenge through others on social media.
2-      Making new Friends- the Ice Bucket Challenge allowed the videos that were posted to be seen on other peoples news feeds of different social media accounts. The challenge allowed strengthening relationships and creating new friendships in supporting, raise money and awareness for ALS.
3-      Succumbing to social pressure from existing friends- Peer/social pressure plays a big role for individuals. This challenge went viral so quickly that when it so happen to be you that got nominated, the pressure builds up as well as emotions leading to humiliations and embarrassment if you refused to do the challenge.
4-      Paying it forward- Forwarding the challenge to someone else is a source of support as well as entertainment for yourself and others knowing you all did it and can talk about each other’s experience.
5-      The altruistic impulse- Helping and showing support for a disease that is need for a cure helps to make a difference in people’s lives. By doing the Ice Bucket Challenge, it showed how many people that was willing to help and try to build the funds for finding a cure.
6-      The prurient impulse- There are plenty of people who love to get attention, especially on social media and the chances are it will go viral pretty fast! This challenge most definitely had many attention grabbers showing support and helping to find a cure for ALS.
7-      The creative impulse- The more creative a person can be the more attention you grab by coming up with creative twists in doing the Ice Bucket Challenge in your own unique way.
8-      The validation impulse- Validation is important to those who want to be known and take credit for what they have done for supporting the cause.
9-      The affinity impulse- Thanks to social media the Ice Bucket Challenge became so popular. This challenge went on for a good while and at least one conversation per day with someone or even checking my News Feed was all about this challenge. I knew many people who have done the challenge but I never got nominated to do so. This challenge has also created a huge connection for many people worldwide by supporting, donating and help raise awareness on ALS.

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
In 2014 the Ice Bucket Challenge was pouring ice all over social media, whether it was Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. The Challenge exploded. The Challenge stated when a 27 year old was diagnosed with ALS, Pete Frates. This family rallied together to bring the disease into the eyes of everyone around the world. The challenge reached up to 150 countries gaining attention from philanthropists and celebrities.
According to the book Groundswell, by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff. The nine reason that a person joins a groundswell.
1.     Keeping up with friendships: The challenge started on Facebook. The challenge spread by nominating people. Then the challenge exploded.
2.     Making new friends:  The videos were spread throughout friend groups.
3.    Succumbing to social pressure from existing friends: being challenged publicly on social media your video was expected and you succumb to the peer pressure.
4.    Pay it forward: by challenging others
5.     The altruistic impulse: Spreading the awareness of ALS. Allowed people to spread the news and help on the road to finding a cure.
6.    The prurient impulse: some people love the attention! So having people watch their video gives them that ratification.
7.     The creative impulse: being creative with the videos, making them your own.
8.     The validation impulse: the people that participated are supporting a good cause.
9.    9. The affinity impulse: It became a conversation among people, family and co-workers.
The groundswell surround the Ice Bucket Challenge was spread through social media and a family’s ambition to get the ALS disease out to people.

IKEA- Sales Manager/Brand Advocate
Link to blog that I have determined to be run by a brand advocate. .http://zacharis81-ikea.tumblr.com/
I believe this blog I chose is more of an advocate rather than a social media influencer because even though the blog was created by a IKEA Sales Manager, the brand IKEA and  photos served as an advertisement for IKEA products and helped to inspire fans of IKEA and others who may be interested in buying IKEA products. As a brand advocates he enjoys the products, his job and services so much that he chose to share his passion of IKEA products with others.

Brand Advocate
http://kyliejenner.tk/
Tumblr media
I believe that this blog is an advocate of the kylie Jenner brand. A great deal of the pictures posted on here are from her Snapchat. The only way anyone would be able to access the videos is if she sends them to people. I can almost guarantee that she didn’t give this to a random fan. It had to be someone who works for her.

#NECBrandAdvocate

I think this blog is more of a brand advocate than a social media influencer because the majority of the blog advocates for PETA and animal rights.

This is a brand advocate for Ford Fiesta. We get a look inside to what the customer thinks about the product. The difference between a brand advocate and a social media influencer is the experience. A social media influencer could just be supporting the product making it known. Whereas a brand advocate experiences it and discusses with for other people to read and see.
In this case, the blog discusses the failing of a ford fiesta and all the issues that come with it.

NFL Domestic Violence
The origin for the negative groundswell on NFL domestic violence stemmed from the Ray Rice case in 2014. Ray Rice in February of 2014 he hit his girlfriend so hard that she became unconscious. This act was caught on camera and spread virally across the world. Ray rice then faced issues within the NFL and many more cases of this erupted. Not only in the NFL but also everywhere in professional sports.
The groundswell of this spread likes wildfire. It was not just a new report it was everywhere. It was on twitter, integral, tumbler, Facebook, funny everywhere. The outreach spread worldwide!  Everyone reached out about the issue. We were all connected and expressed how we felt about what was going on.
The digital death spiral was a result of the negativity. Also, the NFL commissioner was responsible for what was going on with the ray rice case and the suspension of 2 games.

Former NFL executive, Jerry Angelo, told USA Today that teams did not discipline hundreds of players for domestic violence during his 30 years in the league. He says that the fact that he was apart of it and failed to do anything about it makes him a part of the NFL’s domestic violence problem. Angelo was the general manager for the Chicago Bears from 2001 to 2011. After his reflection on the domestic violence matter, the Bear’s released a statement denying any knowledge of Angelo’s statements. “We were surprised by Jerry’s comments and do not know what he is referring to."
This is just another example of the NFL covering up domestic violence within the league.

We already knew Ray Rice had somehow knocked his wife out cold in the elevator of an Atlantic City casino. Now we have all seen the video, so we know he did it with a vicious left hook. And, not surprisingly, this revelation has made Rice public enemy number one in America.
As sad as this situation is, however, it’s important to remember that Rice is just one of many pro athletes accused of domestic violence. This has been a major problem in the sports world for a long time. And unless sports leagues or franchises start instituting zero tolerance policies toward athletes who beat the women in their lives, it’s not going away any time soon.
Today we’re going to take a look at 11 other douchebag famous pro athletes accused of domestic violence over the years. Tragically, the list is hardly comprehensive. Instead, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Forbes reports that according to their various sources, Judge Jones is expected to rule by Thanksgiving on Ray Rice’s appeal for reinstatement into the NFL. At this point, Forbes believes that Jones will reinstate Rice into the league because:
1) Rice being suspended for the same incident
2) The NFL failed to follow their own internal policies on domestic violence punishments
3) The NFL’s indefinite suspension of Rice is that equitable principles in sports labor law disfavor the lifetime or indefinite ban of athlete. An indefinite ban of a player is strongly frowned upon as a matter of public policy.
4) Might be found to violate antitrust law as a form of group boycott by a collection of different employer-teams. Rice’s suspension may also be seen as violating American principles of free trade.
Completely ignoring that domestic violence is the real issue at hand, Forbes adds at the end, “Hopefully, the former Baltimore Ravens star will use his opportunity, if granted, to change his life for the better both on and off the gridiron.”
