Project 4 On effects of online learning for students Journal entry 4
Bibliography
Online school has many different effects on students. I will be researching the effects of online school on students' mental health. This article by the Johns Hopkins news letter stated that online schools over zoom with students across the country all in different time zones and have to wake up at different times. Because they all have to wake up at different times then their sleep schedule is messed up. Another negative health effect is the fact that you spend almost 10 hours a day looking at a computer screen. The continuous use of bright lights on the eyes over time gives you migraines. These are not normal migraines, they are very painful. That's why they created blue light glasses because the glasses dim the brightness on your face. Another article by state news interviewed many students who were moved to online school learning and got their opinion on the whole process. Many of the students are saddened by the fact that they don't get to see their friends in school. Now as you get older and you get a phone you can communicate with people but the younger generation who doesn't have that technology yet gets sad because they don't get to see their friends. Overall online learning has a very negative effect on the students mental health.

Project 4 On effects of online learning for students Journal entry 3
My next section of research will deal with the overall effectiveness of online learning. This one article from the ECPI stated that online learning is very effective for students because of how stress less it is. They said that because online learning is so stressful then that causes the students to learn more easier. Because the students are learning it makes it so that online learning is effective. Also the article said that because learning is online that the teachers can make the learning styles different for each of the individual students which actually is very helpful. Because each student is being catered to their strengths then it makes them retain information easier. This would make online learning effective because the students are learning and growing. Another article by the dita academy stated that students are retaining information more when learning online. This is probably caused by the fact that online learning can be super interactive if the teacher can engage the students. Overall from these two articles i think that online learning has been proved to be effective due to the fact that all the students are actually starting to learn some things.

Project 4 On effects of online learning for students Journal entry 2
For my next journal entry I will talk about the negative effects of online learning on students. According to an article by education week they give many reasons on why online school is actually bad for students. They opened the article and said that a study in 2011 by Washington college made the predicament that the dropout rates were higher for students that were doing strictly online classes. It says that because the students could very easily choose whether or not they wanted to go to class or do work without someone actually telling them too, which led them down a bad path to eventually drop out. What the article also said is that with online school there is less physical contact between students and teachers. Some students need to actually physically see the teacher do it and physically hear the teacher in order to learn the information. The most common downside to online learning is the tendency to cheat. With all of the technology being used students take many opportunities to use all of their resources to cheat and get the answers to problems without doing the work. In one of the other articles I used in my last journal entry also had some negative impacts on online school learning. The school of Aurora said that online school can actually be bad for your health. The students are cooped up in their room all day staring at a computer screen which when staring for 6 hours plus a day without moving actually is really bad for your body.

Project 4 On effects of online learning for students Journal entry 1
For my first journal entry I will talk about the positive effects of online learning on students. This first article I found is by the University of Illinois and it gave a variety of positive effects of online learning on students. It stated that the most positive effect is the fact with online learning you can access everything anywhere and at almost any time which is very good for flexible students with weird time schedules. They also stated that it has a level playing field for all the students. Every student has an equal opportunity to succeed because all of the available resources are available to everyone. Also some of the teachers can get very creative with how they can teach the students. They can use 3rd party websites and activities to keep the students engaged. They can also use break out rooms where the students are almost forced to talk to each other. I also looked at another article by the community college of Aurora. They stated that online school is a lot more cost effective for many of their university’s students and students across the country. With school being online there's no need to use transportation to get anywhere which in the long run will save you a lot of money which is important because getting your degree is expensive already. Online school has many positive benefits to it but is just over shadowed by the fact you're not getting the human contact teaching which is somewhat necessary.

Journal 7
For my second project I will be writing about Martin Luther King Jr‘s speech I Have A Dream. I chose this speech for multiple reasons. I was interested in doing this speech because I was thinking of speeches that could relate to what is happening in today’s society. The speech authors purpose of the speech is very prevelant in today’s times which will greatly help me write this essay. This speech was used to help pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act and also helped pass the Voting Rights Act. Without this speech I think that today’s society would be completely different because of how impactful the speech was. I am always interested in things that make a big impact and this speech meets that requirement. This speech is full of rhetoric. The speech is well known because at the beginning of most of the paragraphs of his speech he starts with I have a dream. This really makes the audience feel that the movement he is trying to create comes true. This speech is all about making a change. During this time period the speech was given there was many social injustices. The African American population was heavily mistreated during this time. And even today the same population of people is mistreated. That makes the speech relevant in today’s society. The words that Martin Luther King Jr spoke have a very deep and greater meaning than the actual meaning. The metaphors that he talks about compares what was happening in the south to the promises of the founding fathers with their Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Emancipation Proclamation. His speech is that he dreams that the country will be as it was promised and all men and treated equally. His speech was so powerful that his named became known everywhere which is important because he stood for the civil rights movement. This speech was very important to our history and it was so powerful due to all of the rhetoric throughout it.

Logical fallacies is when someone who is trying to make an argument uses the wrong type of reasoning to falsify the logic in their argument. There are many different types of logical fallacies in arguments. If someone made the statement that chick fil a chicken nuggets are better than Mcdonalds nuggets they would need a strong argument to back up their statement. They could say that chick fil a nuggets are better than Mcdonalds nuggets because chick fil a nuggets are made by chick fil a and not Mcdonalds. That would be an example of begging the question. Begging the question is when someone’s reasoning is just restating their argument in a different way. My statement isn’t really an argument, it's just me using my argument as reasoning for why my argument makes sense. That creates a logical fallacy because it’s using false and opinion related reasoning to support my argument which is false to use when arguing using logic. Another example would be chick fil a nuggets are better because everyone loves chick fil a the line is always long at their restaurants. This is an example of bandwagon appeal. Bandwagon appeal is when your reasoning for your argument is when the argumenter uses the overall crowd to help support their argument. It makes it so the audience wants to fit in with everyone so they agree with what the speaker is trying to say. This is another logical fallacy because saying that just because everyone else is doing it isn’t a way to provide solid evidence to make a clear good argument. Logical fallacies are very common throughout people's arguments because they are very easy to use to help make inductive reasoning. They are very toxic to use because they create a false identity towards the audience but if used correctly they can help prove your argument in an unethical way.

Reflection from Essay 1
There were many challenges I faced when writing this essay. First was picking an interesting topic. For my essay I wrote about the Travis Scott burger ad just because I knew I would be able to write about something that actually interested me. The most difficult challenge for me was my introduction paragraph and writing a good thesis statement. Compared to other students' topics , mine was childish and silly so writing a good thesis statement about the rhetoric in the ad was quite difficult. I ended up focusing on one of the devices and based my thesis off of it. If I could change one thing I would have done more research on how salty fast foods chemically make people happy. I did a little research because I thought it would create logos with the ad because it would make logical sense to eat fast food due to the fact it makes you happy. I should have gone more into depth about that point in my essay and used it more. I am proud about the actual flow of my essay. I think I did a good job moving from each of my reasons to make the essay as a whole make sense. This is important so people don’t get lost who are reading essays and understand what the writer is trying to say. Overall though this was a fun essay to write and I am proud of my final product.

For this post I will be focusing on ethos and how it is shown through the picture that I have chosen. This is an ad from McDonald’s for the brand new heavily asked for Travis scoot burger meal. The meal comes with a bacon burger fries and a drink. Ethos is an appeal you use when you are trying to persuade someone with ethics. This ad creates ethos becasue it involves Travis Scott. Travis Scott is a world renown artist who has broke countless record. His song stargazing was a hit last summer that made him even more well known then before. Besides McDonald’s he has done big sponsorship deals with fortnite also. People know that becasue in the bottom left hand corner is the cactus jack sign which is a Travis Scott speciality. What this ad is saying is hey Travis Scott likes this burger so should you. Travis Scott is someone who is loved throughout the world for being a great artist so if there is a burger named after him it should be good right? McDonald’s picked a great person to be the front page of this new meal. And obviously there persuasion method has been working because sales have shot through the roof. Overall this ad uses ethos because it uses someone who is looked at well throughout the world to represent there company and so therefore you should eat their food.

Journal Post 3
By the way Abdurraqib presented these essays it was very clear he was trying to get many different points across to the reader. Abdurraqib tried to convey the message of optimism in his first essay “Carly Rae Jepsen Loves You Back”. In his essay he talks about comparing love to war and that everyone loves different things which creates conflicts and in the end war. People weaponize sadness and use that strong emotion really can be a powerful weapon. He specifically talks about the song Call Me Maybe. That song is very cheerful and enlightening. He talks about how what the artist does is she wants her listeners to put their sadness to the side for one moment and just have fun and be happy for a brief moment. He tries and does that in his essay causing people to be joyful. In his other essay “Burning That Which Will Not Save You: Wipe Me Down And The Ballad Of Baton Rouge” he talks about the song Wipe me Down. The writer uses parallelism to structure how he writes the essay. Structures it into 4 parts - shoulders, chest, pants, and shoes. In each part it describes how that certain part helps you become a better person. At the time that the song was released was right after Katrina hit. That caused kairos for people listening to the song due to the timing of the release. 3 BR friends created a great song to uplift the city. Hearing about their story could cause people to get emotional. They feel joyful and uplifting emotions from hearing their story causing pathos.

Journal Post 2
I started actually writing in the 5th grade. I remember we would write persuasive essays every other week and that is what led me to my writing style. We followed the same process every single time. Research, Thought process, Rough Draft, Revise, and finally the Final Draft. That set me up for a very structural form of writing style. I would write according to the steps that were provided to me. I would say that this led me to be a bad writer. This structural form or writing made so that my thoughts couldn’t flow and it was very structured. But as said in “Why I Write” by Joan Didion there is no such thing as a bad writer. “ By which I mean not a “good” writer or “bad” writer but simply a writer, a person whose most absorbed and passionate hours are spent arranging words on pieces of paper.” (Didion 2). What that means to me is that you absorb the information that you must provide to the reader and use your words to make them understand it. It doesn’t matter how you get to the point it just matters that you can get to it. My writing style makes it hard to understand what I’m saying because of how I structure my words. This is due to the fact of structured writing stuck to me at a young age. It’s changed as I’ve gotten older to a more creative style. Just writing what comes to my mind and making it make sense. Over time I hope to improve my writing abilities so more people can understand the thoughts I’m trying to provide them with.

Journal Post 1
What covid has changed for me was how my senior year came to an abrupt end. One of the things I was most excited for my senior year was my senior lacrosse season. From lacrosse I have made friends with people that will be in my life for the rest of my life. I was so excited to have one last season with them but for it to not even happen really did suck. Also prom being cancelled was awful also but I’ve had four homecomings so how much more different could prom really have been. What covid also changed for me is how I got to interact with my friends. My whole life I have never really been a big video game player. But all through quarantine playing video games was the only way I could interact with my friends. Never in my life would I ever have sat at home and played video games all day long. But that's all I could do because if covid. It really irritated me that I couldn’t go out and physically socialize with my friends. So what I learned from covid is that I need to always be around people. Not being able to see my friends really impacted me because I realized that in a couple months I would be leaving for college and I wouldn’t get to see them as much. So I learned to take advantage of my time. I learned that I should never waste a single second because you never know when it can all go away. So every day that I’ve been able to do anything I make sure I go out and do something. If it’s as simple as going to the dining hall and meeting new people instead of doordashing food and sitting in my room, I’ll do it. I am done wasting my days sitting around doing nothing. So what covid has taught me is to take advantage of your time and never take anything for granted.
