What the heck was The Pony Project and what are all these photos of giant, oddly customized G3 ponies about?
Having been a part of the fandom since the internet was a common thing in people’s homes, I watched all three pony projects happen online from the comfort of my home, desperately wishing I could afford to attend and see them in person. I’m forever thankful for the amazing members of the MLPTP and MLPArena who did attend and shared photos.

The first Pony Project was in 2005 and happened in New York City. Forty-three female artists were given large, blank ponies to customize and 50% of the sales were donated to Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, which is “dedicated to helping children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions.” Sadly, the MLP Arena’s archives only go back to 2012 and images from before then have vanished. The MLPTP has a page featuring links to images here. The artists were: Aiko Nakagawa, Amanda Visell, Andrea Elston, Anna Cangialosi, Betsey Johnson, Chico Hayasaki, Claw Money, Cynthia Chan, Dame Darcy, Elisa Flowers, Fafi, iheart Boutique, Isabel Samaras, Ingri, Jem Filippi, Julie Verhoeven, Jen Lyon, Junko Mizuno, Justine D, Kammy Roulner, Klor, Kozyndan, Lisa Alisa, Lisa Petrucci, Lori Earley, Louisa St.Pierre, Mamechiyo, Maya Hayuk, Michelle Valigura, Momoyo Torimitsu, Queen Andrea, Readymade, Renata Palubinskas, Sally Thurer, Sandra Shap, Sas Christian, Sarah Wilkinson, Stina Persson, Tado, Trish Grantham, Tricia Jutras, Yasuko Azuma, and Xanine. Photos are missing, but you can find info on how much each sold for at Where the Rainbow Ends.
This is the project that gave us the three brushable ponies with heart eyes for purchase. The white one is the most common with the black and twice as fancy being much more expensive.

At the 2010 MLP Fair, one of the large, blank ponies was raffled off as one of the prizes. The super lucky Snyfez won! This photo gives you a really good idea of the size of these things.

The second Pony Project took place in 2008 and featured 25 Ponies for 25 Years. There were contests for fans and children to submit designs; winning designs were made into the large ponies by Hasbro artists. Others were customized by celebrities (Amy Grant, Lee Ann Rhimes, etc) and artists (Junko Mizuno, Juni Moon, etc). All ponies were auctioned off to raise funds for Give Kids the World Village and raised a little over $17,000 USD. The website featuring turnaround images of all the ponies and details was built in Flash unfortunately ( Archive.org ) and all you can really see are the wallpaper and a banner image encouraging you to bid on the ponies. 123Klan’s website has links to their custom and images of 20 others.
KarRedRoses, a longtime fan and one of the founders of PonyCon NYC, did promotional work as their florist. Her thread at the My Little Pony Trading Post has extensive photos and descriptions of the event. Go check it out! She was also given one of the large, blank ponies to use for a centerpiece and customized it herself. She also made a video!
Twinkle Hope and Junko Mizuno ponies were later made into regular brushables for sale.

The third Pony Project was in 2012 and is possibly the best documented one. This project took place in LA and New York. These events expanded into 2D artwork as well as the large ponies. There were 52 pieces in total: 29 giant ponies and 23 paintings.
The LA artists were: 6%DOKIDOKI, 64 Colors, Amy Sol, Ana Bagayan, Angry Woebots, Blamo (Mikie Graham), Blythe (Junie Moon), Chikuwaemil, COPE2, DABS and MYLA, Eimi, HIME+YOU, Indie, Jillian Kate, Joyrich, J*RYU, Julie West, Kano, Kukula, Lisa Alisa, Luke Chueh, Madoka Kinoshita, Martin Hsu, Mark Mothersbaugh, Miso, Miss Kika, Onch Movement, Perez Hilton, Shojono Tomo, Sket One, Spank!, TOUMA.
The New York Artists were: 6%Dokidoki, 64Colors, Bei Badgirl, The Beast Brothers, Camilla d’Errico, Chikuwaemil, Cope2, Dabs and Myla, eimi, Hanazuki, Hime+you, Indie184, Jeremiah Ketner, Malcolm Stuart for Joyrich, Junie Moon, Julie West, Lisa Alisa, L’amour Supreme, Luke Chueh, Madoka Kanoshita, Martin Hsu, Onch Movement, Perez Hilton, Rob Reger, Shojono Tomo, Sucklord, TOUMA.
You can view accounts of the event and more photos from: Brittany Made Me Pretty (part 1, part 2), Non Solo Kawaii, Vinyl Creep, Baby Medly’s video, and Equestria Daily’s coverage (1, 2, 3), Cool Hunting, MLPG3Fandom, and Hasbro’s YouTube.
In progress photos of Miss Kika’s work can be viewed here. This pony was purchased by a member of the MLP Arena and is now in Denmark.
Sadly, there were no exclusive Pony Project brushables from the 2012 event.
