Fall Foliage Photography Tips
It is no secret that the #fall / #autumn season attracts many #photographers to the most scenic locations of the world, since it presents great photographic opportunities to capture beautiful, vivid colors. This rather short window of opportunity is very unique #photographically, because it can transform otherwise boring locations into a stunning display of color. I have been #photographing fall colors for many years now and I have been fortunate to acquire some knowledge on what specific tools and photography techniques work best in the field. Having just come back from a fall photography workshop in southwest Colorado, where I had a chance to spend time with some amazing photographers from all over the US, I wanted to share a few tips with our readers on photographing fall foliage. Canon EOS 70D - A first Look - Bob Atkins Photography
It feels very familiar after using other cameras in the EOS family. There are no major changes in control layout or operation, and the tilt and swivel LCD is as useful as ever. This LCD is touch sensitive, and though I've not really been a big fan or touch screen interfaces on cameras in the past, I was impressed with the capability of the touch screen control of the 70D. I think it can be faster and easier than the old system of menus and buttons (which are still there of course for those who want to use them). I was surprised and pleased at AF performance during video recording, especially using the 18-135 IS STM kit lens. Tracking AF was quick, silent and accurate. There was little or no focus hunting. Move from a shot of a distant object to something close up and by the time you have the closeup subject framed, focus has smoothly shifted from infinity to the new subject. Very impressive. If you shoot a lot of video, the 70D will likely make you very happy. The impressive video AF performance is presumably the result of the new sensor, in which all the pixels can act as phase sensitive AF detectors. Live View focus in still photography mode was also quite good, though not as fast as using the conventional dedicated phase sensitive AF detectors in normal reflex shooting mode, however the Live View AF is very accurate.

How photography became the hottest new investment choice
The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the world’s great galleries. Visitors flock to see Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks and Grant Wood’s American Gothic, two of the most recognisable images in modern American art. But what has stunned art collectors is that a #photograph of visitors to the Art Institute, taken in 1990 by Thomas Struth, fetched more at auction than any other photograph last year, selling for $777,088. And it’s not even the only one in existence – Struth produced 10 prints. As bankers to the wealthy Coutts revealed in a recent report, Old Masters have fallen from favour, with prices down 40% from their peak a decade ago. Oriental carpets and rugs are completely out of fashion, with prices back to where they were in 2005. Even the boom in classic cars has stalled, with Ferrari prices in reverse by 10% last year. But Coutts said photography has emerged as the hottest new investment for the very well-off. #Photos by Gilbert and George, Robert Mapplethorpe and Andreas Gursky all fetched more than $400,000 at auctions in 2016. #Photography has until now had an ambivalent status in the art collecting world, and for good reason: collectors value scarcity. There is only one Nighthawks, whereas Struth could have reproduced thousands, indeed millions, of his image of visitors to the #gallery.

The Photo That Is Helping Women Detect Breast Cancer
Earlier this week, many #Facebook users were posting red hearts in support of breast cancer awareness, but one woman is opening up about why a "cute heart" isn't going to help save lives. Erin Smith Chieze posted the #photo above on Facebook, giving an explicit description of how breast cancer can look and feel, and it's going viral for all the right reasons. In response to all the red hearts Erin has seen on Facebook, she explained the importance of these lemons. "In December of 2015 when I saw an indentation that looked like one of those #pictures, I instantly knew I had #breastcancer," she wrote. "I tried to feel for a tumor, but my tumor was non palpable. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 days later and with stage 4 the following month. A heart did nothing for awareness. I knew what breast cancer was. I knew all about self exams, but a picture of what to look for keyed me into knowing I had a terminal disease."

Pete Turner, Color Photography Icon, Dies at 83
#PeteTurner, the American #photographer who’s recognized as one of the first masters of #colorphotography, has died. He was 83. The New York Times reports that Turner passed away from cancer at his home on Long Island, New York, on September 18th. In 2000, #PhotoDistrictNews magazine readers and website visitors voted Turner as one of the 20 most influential #photographers of all time. Here’s what photographer Eric Meola wrote about Turner at the time: Photographers take #pictures with #cameras; Pete makes photographs with his imagination. Before Pete, there was nothing modern about photography. The first time I saw one of his photographs, it hit me as though I had been struck by lightning, and with almost as much voltage.
