Dear Students,
Soon we will begin our time together.
Before we meet, I’d like you to do a few things…
For our first class you’ll need to bring
1 roll of scotch tape
I like clear and shiny kind better than the ‘invisible’ tape but either will work
1 black Papermate Flair pen,
medium point
1 box of 24 Crayola Crayons
no less and no more than 24!
1 three ring binder
medium size (1.5 inch spine)
100 plastic sheet protectors
get the clearest ones they have, and get medium or heavy weight, not economy, load them into your three ring binder.
You will also need…
One dozen black papermate flair pens, medium point, PA8430152
One dozen Uniball Vision Stick Roller Ball Pens, Fine Point, Black ink #60126
Note: Get the one with the gray body. Fine point, not ‘micro point’ and Vision Stick not ‘Vision Elite’ –
All your other supplies will be included with your art kit. Your lab fee for the kit is $80.00. Payable with Wisc Card or by check to Art Department, University of Wisconsin-Madison. You’ll need to pay your lab fee in the art office. It’s right up the hall from our classroom.
BOOKS YOU WILL NEED
Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice
Ivan Brunetti
Yale University Press 2011
ISBN 9780300170993
Whatcha Mean, Whats a Zine?
Esther Pearl Watson and Mark Todd
Graphia 2006
ISBN 10:0618563156
CHARACTER NAMES:
In my class, we all go by different names, names of characters we chose for ourselves and we use them for the entire semester. You are free to tell each other your real names, of course, but in class we will use the name you’ve chosen. You can pick a character that exists in the image world – like Medusa or Chef Boyardee or Shrek. Or yu can pick a ‘character’ that exists in the real world —like Sophocles or Beyonce or Ruth Bader Ginsberg or you can choose a character that is an ‘entity’ of some sort, like NASA or Super One Foods, or Iceland or The Ramones. You can choose a character of any gender, from any point in time, any genre. Think of a name you’d like to hear said out loud over the semester. For example, I love wookies, so one semester I was Professor Chewbacca and I was so happy when anyone said my name. In our class, I’ll be Professor SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)
You’ll keep your name for the whole semester and then your name will be retired. You can use it again, but no other student will be able to use it.
Please let me know what character name you’ve chosen for your self before August 24th.
Finally, I’ve kept this tumblr page for my students for the last four of five years. You can go though the archives and see what sort of work students have done, what the assignments are like, and what sort of extra credit options there are for you do do.
I am very much looking forward to hearing from you about your choice of character name very soon! Don’t over-think it.
Professor SETI

Recently an article has been published about the founder of the Philly Zine Fest, Casey, and his battle with cancer. “Philly Zine Fest founder Casey Grabowski’s cancer battle has relied on medical crowdfunding. Without the GoFundMe page, his wife says, “we would be homeless and uninsured.”“
Please consider donating to Casey’s Gofund Me. We don’t want to lose him! <3 https://www.gofundme.com/casey-has-fing-cancer…
