Anomaly D41 is so, so weird.

Basically its a .zip of a program called "ICS: Innovative Coding Stratagems" and all it does is allow you to make files in anomalous and as of yet unused file extension. If you find one of these in the wild, CALL YOUR LOCAL COMMITTEE SUPERVISOR.

.3: supposedly used for images, it turns anything saved as a .3 file into... a memetic agent. Yes some people used it for download games into their brains, all of them die shortly after.

.xhss: eXternal Human Soul Save file. The delegation from the undertale multiverse has to yet find this file type outside of their jurisdiction.

.OCI: Obtuse Computation Interface. Used normally in the SCP multiverse, its capable of making "true AI". As of ■/■/2023, no .oci file exists outside of universe SCP/GOLD-TITANIUM-SAMARIUM (known as "Pluripotent Impotence canon").

.x37: unknown meaning. Any and all images saved as this file type become corrupted and around 3.1415 times their original weight. The images irreparably become memetic kill agents for yet unknown reasons. It could be used as means for crypted messages, but the technology is beyond us for now.

.chz: unknown meaning. Not to be confused with files such as .COGHAZ or .ChaZ

.üx7⁷: unknown meaning. The file name slowly corrupts the functions of most devices.

.1969: Meaning Unclear. All files in this format will have their date edited to show their true creation date (if they were made before UNIX time)

.q: unknown meaning. File appears to be used to code charachters into any sufficiently advanced 2d game. These charachters are invariabilmente sentient. Do not EVER convert a file from .chr to .q

.¤: incomprehensible. All tests have failed to discern the meaning of this file type, nor what its usage could be.

.nil: File reduces any and all programs saved into .nil folders to weigh 0 bits. The only limit to this conversion are .sys or .os files (referring to operative systems or entire computers) making truly infinite size capacity effectively impossible.

.ERRATA: generated by ICS only when it encounters an error, probably as "failsafe" in case a self edit causes damage to the computer its harbored in.

The Molemen first appeared on the Office's radar in 1965, when one Thaddeus Marsh, an expert in soon-to-be illegal genetic engineering and anatomy manipulation, began to talk to colleagues in the extranormal sciences community about retreating underground. Fearing nuclear annihilation in the Cold War, many of his associates agreed with him.

Using currently-classified anomalous technology, they created a series of self-replicating bunkers deep underground, starting with small rooms that expanded into massive complexes that gradually connected via long tunnels. Railroad systems were established in these tunnels, and by 1971, enough work had been done that Thaddeus Marsh felt confident moving people underground.

The work was quick, but the other scientists, hired workers, and civilians drawn by the promise of safety had not expected Marsh's mental deterioration. All of the personnel who moved underground were trapped and subjected to extranormal genetic and anatomic manipulation to "better adapt" them, in Marsh's belief, to a life underground.

From 1971 to 74, Marsh, now known as the Underking Murmur, ruled with an iron fist. His territory expanded under the lower 48 states, and parts of Canada and Mexico. His madness seemed to grow with his power, kidnapping cavers, miners, and other surface-dwellers to induct them into his army. Developing unimaginably vast factories, he created digging machines capable of moving anomalous amounts of dirt. By 1974, his plan to invade the surface world with these machines became widely known among the People Below.

The organizing body responsible for the incredibly complex logistics of moving so much earth, the Miner's Union, fomented a revolution in the Underground in mid-74. After three months of vicious fighting, the loyalty of the Underking's minions was tested and found wanting. Underking Murmur was deposed, and in its place the Union members created a council. The Underking's territory "balkanized" into 12 loosely-allied "Burroughs" that the Office recognizes as the political authority of the People Below.

With recent diplomatic efforts, the Office for the Preservation of Normalcy has welcomed the People Below to the surface under our Legal Extranormal Persons program.

ok. Narrative obfuscation in House Of Leaves. It’s a relatively simple story about a man who moves into a house with his wife and kids, and the house is haunted. That’s it. The core themes are very transparent.

Except, that story is documented by a famous war documentarian, then published as a series of rare tapes, which are discoursed by film buffs, then interpreted from viewings and reading film critique by a blind old man, then his thoughts are transcribed into a manuscript by a series of young women, which is then compiled from scattered notes by the most mysoginistic, damaged, toxic pothead drop-out who won’t stop talking about his life, which is THEN edited and published by some vaguely nefarious agency who soberly refuse to provide any clarification or context.

It’s not simple, but there are so many different hands on the wheel with wildly differing opinions that you can’t discern the truth.

Johnny Truant is such a miserable hopeless fuck up. He has no sense of academic rigor or archival professionalism. Any interference he provides only muddies the waters and taints what would otherwise be a gripping piece of metaphysical film criticism. His neurotic rambling and personal anecdotes cloud an otherwise reasonable story.

If he wasn’t in it, if we could read Zampano’s manuscript directly, WE would be able to understand the truth. We would get it completely, and we wouldn’t have to encounter so much violence, so much miserable graphic detail. It would be a better story.

And fuck it, if we didn’t have to read all of Zampano’s tangents and analyses and interpretations, if we could just find a copy of the famous “five-and-a-half minute hallway” vhs, if we could SEE it, we’d understand. We wouldn’t need endless pontification of what Navidson and Karen’s marriage might entail, or recitations of what a director once said in a Rolling Stones article. We’d see the hallway itself, stretching out into what should be the backyard, and we’d get it. Hell, Zampano is blind in his old age. He can’t even watch the damn movie! But we could. We’d know instantly, the second we saw it. The impossibility of it, the gravity of it, the weight of that dark abyss.

And well, the VHS recording is a little dark, and the quality is poor, and maybe the white balance isn’t so perfect. And actually, VHs tapes could be manipulated. We can’t be sure that Navidson isn’t just using clever videography tricks to invent a hallway. If we were there, if we found the house (it’s in virginia, isn’t it? we even have the address). If we GO there, we could look down that hallway. And it’s dark, so if we just brought a flashlight, maybe took a few steps inside-
