Sense

I recently had a conversation with a friend about the two most overwhelming sensory experiences of my life. neither required chemicals, and it might be possible to recreate one but both might be hard to do.

First, was seeing a band i hadn't really heard of yet (or at least not that I knew of) in a small venue in Los Angeles. it was Explosions in the Sky at the Troubadour at the end of 2005. That much exposure to sound waves in such a small dimensional volume was the first time I felt like my mind was completely separated from any invasive idea or distraction. It wasn't just that they played loudly in a small space, their music tells a tale in each compositon. There are peaks and valleys of emotion that, when played with this exponential effect, made every hair on my body follow along, each beat of the bass changed the rhythm of my breathing as well as the beats of my heart. It was beyond anything I had ever imagined for music. I had seen them many times since then, but no matter how great the show was, the bar was set so high with that initial iteration that no act has ever eclipsed it. I imagine we have all had our "most overwhelming positive audible experience" and this one was mine.

The second was a few years after that in a movie theater. I went to see Gaspar Noe's Enter the Void. The title sequence was absolutely insane. It started with a pretty consistent strobe of heavy, sans serif fonts and only a few colors. The credits were the entirety of this opening sequence, so at some point the strobe effect wanes but, at least for me, that was right when it changes and the color palette explodes, the strobe effect now erratically changes along with all of the typefaces. eventually fully decomposing into the last few credits where the crescendo of house music and flashes leave you staring into an establishing shot. I remember taking a deep breathe after the sequence finishes. I hadn't even realized how wide I had opened my eyes. That breathe has yet to be taken since.
