The New York City Subway is an city unto itself with 24 train lines and 468 train stations serving more than 5.3 million people each weekday (MTA Authority). The subway both alienates and unites. It inspires and it aggrevates. It is a district of paradoxes. The Museums and the Network class at Pratt Institute, analyzes several facets of the act of commuting on the NYC subway. As part of the course, we have organized an exhibition that explores the subway's sights and sounds, the interactions that occur with people as well as objects and the virtual communities that come together as a result of their commuter experience. This Tumblr page serves as both a repository for the items featured in the exhibition as well as a forum to discuss subway musings and experiences. We hope not only to provide a virtual catalog but to encourage exploration and conversations. Please share with us!

Hungry, why wait?
Has anyone else noticed that subway –on- the move salesmen are on the decline these days? Ten years ago it was common to be constantly interrupted by a flow of people selling things in the subway. You could obtain everything from $1 batteries, $10 DVDs, cheap toys to an array of delicious snacks.  The city’s crackdown on subway vendors has forced many to abandon this profitable underground business venture.  The underground economy, however, has not quite exited the scene; instead it has morphed into established underground businesses and salesmen relying on your philanthropic interest to make a sale. Who has not seen the outspoken teenagers selling M&Ms and Welch’s fruit snacks claiming to raise funds for their basketball teams or the more recent sales pitch of “staying off the streets”?  What about your churro vendor who sells the delicious sweet snack less than your cup of java?
More and more newsstands and small pop up shops are found in the subway offering a variety of tasty snacks. Sometimes what they sell is beyond the usual casual fare. In our exhibition, we feature some of the interesting snacks you can purchase underground.
