Starbucks Isn’t Unionizing Their Employees - Here’s Why That’s a Problem
A Starbucks in Arizona recently let go of one of their 19-year-old shift supervisors, Laila Dalton, for openly being a union organizer for her store in Scottsdale, AZ. Her managers accomplished this by stating that Dalton had “Illegally recorded a conversation without both parties' consent.” This video consisted of Dalton being written up under false pretenses and crying to her manager insisting that the write-up was not deserved. The manager made a report of the video and the false pretenses for which she was getting in trouble, had it sent to HR and had Dalton separated (Starbucks’ fancy-ass term for “fired”) from the company.
This isn’t unheard of. Separating a partner out of retaliation? Starbucks would NEVER. (Oh, wait, haha, it happened to your author too!) That’s beside the point, the issue at hand here is that until Starbucks employees have access to a union, this corporation will continue to filter out partners to fill their “May I take your hat sir?” mentalities and bring it to life. If you don’t want to get down and lick the ground the customers and higher ups walk on, you’ll find yourself out on the curb pretty quickly. God forbid you fight for liveable wages and good working conditions as well.
Starbucks, as a corporation, thrives on being able to fire anyone they so choose, for any reason they can conjure up in their imagination. On top of that, customers verbally abuse partners every single day. Starbucks as a corporation has enabled customers to present partners with their absolute worst attitude and behavior, at the expense of whatever poor unfortunate soul is standing at the front counter or drive-thru window. Starbucks has made it evidently clear to both partners and customers that “Making the moment right” basically equates to “We shall never deny a guest, even the most ridiculous request.” This policy, although great for customers to be able to lie and snag a free drink, is so costly on the employees mental healths.
The current state of Starbucks I would say, is in absolute ruins, and Starbucks’ answer is to bring back former CEO Howard Shultz for an interim term, because he is a known union buster. Once Starbucks realizes that no one’s playing around anymore (Laila had a line of people standing outside her old store DEMANDING for her to be reinstated), things will not end the way they want them to. Honestly, it’ll be kinda fun to watch them crash and burn. They deserve it, after all.
