Dance Conditioning Part - II
Benefits of Mindfulness and Meditation
Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations. Meditators have been claiming for thousands of years that a regular meditation practice is an effective treatment for anxiety, stress, worry, lack of focus, addiction and relationship problems. And leads to peace of mind, well being, greater focus, mental clarity, and enhanced creativity.
Science is now supporting many of these claims. According to neuroscientists as you continue to meditate your brain physically changes, even though you’re not aware of those changes. Mindful meditation helps activate the “rest and digest” part of the autonomic nervous system. This aids in stress management and eases feelings of stress and anxiety. Research in people with clinical levels of anxiety have found that 90% experienced serious reductions in anxiety after participation in mindful meditation practices. Research has found that meditation boosts divergent thinking, a type of thinking that allows the generation of many ideas. It also improves awareness and our ability to filter out useless thoughts and other mental processes during creative tasks. Neuroscientists have also found that after only 11 hours (meaning 11 hours accumulated over time) structural changes in the part of the brain monitoring our focus and self control occurred. And that those who meditate stay on tasks longer and make fewer task switches. Mindful meditation also improves our relationship with ourselves. You become more comfortable and accepting of who you are, which allows you to be more accepting of others as they are.
mUvmethod incorporates mindfulness practices and meditation into every class and everything we do. Throughout class we incorporate various techniques to bring awareness to the fluctuations of the mind, or that inner voice in our head. That voice that delivers an inner commentary of our likes, dislikes, fears, dreams, anxieties and hopes. Becoming aware of that voice and learning to observe it is a big part of what we do and an important step in growth and progression. When we become aware of that voice and learn to think beyond what we feel we retrain our minds so that we can live better lives.
Just a few ways meditation can enhance your life:
1. Meditation reduces stress and improves concentration.
2. Meditation encourages a healthy lifestyle and literally slows the aging process.
3. Meditation increases self-awareness, acceptance, gratitude and happiness.
4. Mediation induces relaxation benefiting cardiovascular and immune health.
I personally have experienced these benefits and wholeheartedly believe in the practice. For only a few minutes a day anyone can enjoy these improvements in their lives. It’s never too late…or too early   to begin a meditation and mindfulness practice.

Dance Conditioning Part - I
Dance Conditioning Part - I G{Are your postural muscles holding you back?
Postural muscles are a set of muscles that are designed to stabilize and mobilize the body. These muscles are designed for endurance and are the most utilized set of muscles in the dance population.
The postural muscles are meant to support and work with the deep core stabilizing muscles and phasic, or outer unit, muscles of the body. However, if the deep core muscles and the phasic muscles aren’t working properly the postural muscle will take over and work as stabilizers and mobilizers. In other words they start to do all the work! The result is tightness, pain, reduced flexibility and mobility.
These muscles are made up of 51% or more of slow twitch fibers. Postural muscles are tonic in make up, which means they are designed to contract at lower loads for long periods of time. They have a greater capacity for sustained work but are prone to shorten due to overuse, underuse, force and trauma. Postural muscles can become hyperactive, tight and painful at times. If the postural muscles are tight so is the surrounding fascia. This affects the way we carry ourselves, flexibility, mobility, balance, alignment and posture. The treatment for this is to release and relax.
The deep core stabilizing muscles consist of:
•             Transversus Abdominis
•             Multifidus
•             Diaphragm
•             Pelvic Floor Muscles
•             Posterior fibers of the Internal Obliques
•             Lumbar portions of the Longissimus and Iliocostalis
These muscles originate or insert at the vertebrae and generate little or no movement during activation. They are tonic in makeup and consist mainly of slow-twitch muscle fibers. They are designed to contract at lower loads for long periods of time. Stress, pain and trauma can inhibit their ability to fire and because movement can occur without activation of these muscles they can shut off.
Each mUvmethod class is designed to reduce pain in the body and release muscular, fascial and neural tension, particularly in the neck, upper, mid and lower back. Lower back pain can have a direct effect on the firing patterns of the Deep Core Muscle. As we work to eliminate and reduce pain students are able to activate this set of muscles. We also create awareness around them and teach the students how to consciously engage on a deep level. This reduces the workload the postural muscles will take on if the deep core muscles aren’t doing their job and allows for more fluid and effective movement patterns throughout the body. When working efficiently the deep core muscles contract prior to movement to brace the spine and provide segmental stabilization.
These muscles are larger and often lie superficial, or over top of the postural muscles. They consist mainly of fast-twitch muscle fibers making them phasic in nature. They are designed to contract to produce movement but they fatigue quickly. The outer unit muscles generally weaken under stress and respond to strengthening
Our program is designed to get you moving with ease and efficiency. As well as build stability and strength from the inside out by training muscles in the way they were designed to work. Each set of muscle is unique and plays it’s own role in stability. Once an understanding of the design and role the different muscle groups play we can incorporate exercises designed to engage and strengthen phasic muscles, release muscular, fascial and neural tension in the postural muscles and activate the deep core muscles. Learning and applying these key concepts can transform the way you move. When a clear understanding of how the body really works is established one can maximize flexibility and mobility in a safe and effective way.

Yoga Poses For Athletes Part - IV
About mUvmethod
mUvmethod is a progressive yoga based system designed to move U forward. Many of us have physical, mental and emotional resistance that gets in the way of growth and progression. Each one of our signature programs is designed to help you let go so that you can move forward.
All programs are designed to release muscular and fascial tension while improving strength, balance, posture, alignment and stability. The results are improved flexibility, mobility, core strength, enhanced performance, recovery optimization, injury prevention and pain relief.
We incorporate various forms of meditation as a tool for mindfulness. This provides insight and allows us to move past limiting thought patterns and emotional reactions that get in our way.
Classes are designed to take dancers and athletes through stages of mental and emotional growth. The results are increased confidence, resilience, self acceptance, creativity and enhanced ability to perform under stress. Our students experience a decrease in stress, anxiety, worry and fear. They find themselves living calmer, clearer lives.
All classes have a strong flexibility component. Our particular approach to flexibility is an incredible way to deepen flexibility and mobility. We incorporate safe and effective ways to stretch for optimal results and teach students about the nervous system and how it regulates flexibility. Over time our students learn to work with rather than against it and experience rapid increases in flexibility and mobility.
About Christine Jones
mUvmethod founder, Christine Jones, has spent the last two decades guiding others to move with ease, strength and confidence.  Christine has studied dance, anatomy, kinesiology, pilates, yoga, fascial health, and most everything movement related in effort to help dancers, athletes and all enhance their movement patterns, as well as, restore their own unique and ideal alignment, increase their strength, flexibility and mobility and restore balance to their bodies, minds and lives.
Christine holds a B.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Utah, was the first fully certified STOTT Pilates Instructor Trainer in Utah and founded Intermountain Pilates Training Center, is Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200 and RYT-500 certified. While these are all wonderful accomplishments her true passion is her family.
At mUvmethod we understand that everything in the body is connected.  We look at the body from the perspective of fibrous fascial connective tissue, where the muscles fit into the fascial web of the body. Rather than seeing one muscle as originating and inserting at one particular point, dividing and separating the body, we see the connection of one muscle to the next via the connective tissue.  This gives us a clearer understanding around why you just can’t have something affect one part of the body without it affecting the rest. For example,  most of us have experienced an injury in a particular place like the neck and then the shoulder starts to hurt and moves into the wrist and eventually into the foot.  in our culture we describe this as “just getting old”, but it’s not a result of getting old, it’s the result of a dehydrated, unhealthy fascial system.

Yoga Poses For Teens Part - II
mUvmethod
The ability to do the splits affects many aspects of dance and is one of the foundations for success. The splits translate to an ability to meet the technically challenging aspects of dance with ease and efficiency. Without this you will have to work a whole lot harder as a dancer.
Many yogis also work towards the splits as this allows for more flexibility and range of motion in the hips. This translates to ease and freedom of movement and allows yogis to deepen and experience postures that they otherwise were limited in. Of course, in yoga achieving a posture is not the ultimate goal but coming to your edge and extending beyond your limitations is.
The edge is that place where you feel a little unsure. It is a place where you learn a lot about yourself as it gets your attention and brings you to the present moment. In this space you learn to listen and accept. You learn to push yourself past your fears and pull back when needed. You develop patience and an understanding that force doesn’t work and things will happen when the time is right. You become more aware of what is holding you back. And when it comes to the Splits, Hanumanasana, your hip flexors are most likely holding you back.
At times and depending on the position of your hip you can have up to ten muscles opposing hip extension. These are your hip flexors. They can really get in the way for dancers when doing the splits, arabesques, penches, leg hold turns, grand battements, grand jetes and much more. For yogis, this can seriously limit you when doing Monkey Pose, Dancer Pose, One-Footed King Pigeon, Floor Bow, Pigeon Pose, Upward Facing Bow Pose and Upward Facing Two-Footed Staff Pose to name a few.
You may be able to do the splits but still have tight hip flexors. If this is the case you are putting more strain on the hamstrings than you need to. Over time, this will lead to strain on the hamstrings and eventually you will experience limited mobility in the back of the legs and you will still have tight hip flexors. This will continue to limit your mobility and flexibility, particularly hip extension, meaning anything you do with one leg behind you.
Below are our top five stretches for moving towards the splits with ease and efficiency without causing damage to the hamstrings.

Roll With It (aka Accept What Is)
Butting Heads with Resistance
Have you ever pressed the gas pedal in your car only to find the car won’t move? So you push on the gas again, a little harder this time. Still the car won’t move much. Then you either push the gas again, even harder or you pause for a moment only to realize that your emergency brake is on. So you release the brake and move forward with ease and efficiency.
“Accept – then act. Whatever the present moment contains accept it as if you have chosen it. Always work with it not against it.”   — Eckhart Tolle
The emergency brake is there to ensure that the car stays put. To resist any external force that may propel your vehicle in any undesirable direction. It is used to keep the car stationary. At times the resistance created by the brake is very desirable but when you are ready to move forward you have to release the brake. Of course you could choose to keep the brake on but it would definitely get in the way of ease and efficiency and over time would wear the brakes out.
Resistance is the ability to prevent something from having an effect.
In the case of the car the brake was resisting the force generated by pressing the gas in an effort to move the vehicle forward. Of course, the emergency brake is a fantastic feature when needed. At times it helps to ensure the safety of the vehicle and anyone in or around it. But if you can’t release the brake it will hold you back from moving forward.
Much like the car we (human beings) also have an “emergency brake”. It is called your nervous system. One of it’s main roles is survival optimization. And one of its main goals is to reduce surprise and optimize actions. It does this through the sympathetic nervous system with the “fight, flight or freeze” response. This reaction is a form of resistance to ensure survival. And was meant to heighten in times of perceived danger and chill out when life is comfortable and familiar. It prefers the comfortable and familiar. Therefore, resistance to change and the uncomfortable is part of our biological makeup. Much like the emergency brake on your car the sympathetic nervous system can greatly hold you back and definitely wear you out if it is left in its heightened state most of the time.

We teach students about the nervous system and how it regulates flexibility. Over the series, students will learn to work with it rather than against it and see a rapid increase in flexibility.
In each class we focus on a particular peak posture such as Super Splits, Dancer Pose (Scorpion) or Middle Splits. We will go through exercises and apply techniques designed to release muscular and fascial tension in the muscles that oppose the peak posture.
For example, Front Splits and Super Splits are greatly opposed by the hip flexors rather than the hamstrings. At times, and depending on the position of your hip, you can have up to ten muscles opposing hip extension. We spend a fair amount of time stretching and releasing tension in the hip flexors prior to doing the splits. This allows the dancer to move into their Splits and Super Splits with ease and without causing unnecessary stress and strain to their hamstrings.

Yoga Poses For Athletes Part - 2
The good news is, at mUvmethod we understands this.  One of our primary focuses is on rehydrating and rehabilitating the fascial system. This create  resilience, joint health and allows the body to move freely without restrictions. So how do you rehydrate the fascial system?  Drink more water?  Well yes and no.  Hydration is great for your body but if your fascia is dehydrated it’s like having a bunch of little kinks in your fascial system and no matter how much water you drink it can’t get to the kinks, the dehydrated tissues.  In order to get the fluids to the dehydrated tissues you need to get better irrigated, which means you need to work on the soft tissue. So how do we work the soft tissues?  You move, in a particular way. The way you approach movement will either draw hydration into your tissues or push it out.  At mUvmethod we know how to draw it in.

Yoga Poses For Athletes Part - 1
mUvmethod is a progressive yoga based system designed to move U forward.
Over time our students learn to work with rather than against it and experience rapid increases in flexibility and mobility.
mUvmethod founder, Christine Jones, has spent the last two decades guiding others to move with ease, strength and confidence.
Personal or semi-personal instruction is an invaluable tool for students of all levels and experience. Specialized and dedicated mUvmethod lessons are the best way to address your goals and work on areas of individual interest. You can work with the instructor of your choice or we can match an instructor to meet your expressed needs.
Dedicated instruction allows for a more intimate view into your practice. You can start a new practice, deepen your practice or spend some time working with an injury or condition. When you work with an instructor in a more concentrated environment, the instructor is able to help you experience the benefits of mUvmethod in a safe, personal way.
Why get personal instruction?
For new students
As a new student, you may be intimidated by the public classroom environment. Personal Instruction allows a teacher the opportunity to focus on you and make sure you are getting off to an appropriate start. Personal yoga instruction will help you integrate into our public classes.
For more experienced students
Experienced students benefit as well. You are able to have a deeper insight into specific postures or categories of postures that interest you. Personal yoga instruction is the perfect learning environment. Our teachers can help you with posture alignment, modifications and can help you develop a balanced home practice. It can also give the experienced student time to learn about yoga philosophy or other aspects of interest, such as meditation and breathing practices.
mUvmethod Flexibility Training
Our mUvmethod Flexibility Training is intended for those already working in the field of yoga, pilates, dance, fitness and/or movement. It is for trained professionals looking to add flexibility plans to their programs and classes.
This course consists of 15 contact hours. That time will be spent diving into the anatomy of the spine, hips and shoulder girdle. Breaking down movement to gain an understanding of what is really happening in the body. And how joint position and the surrounding musculature and fascia either moves you forward or holds you back.
We will cover 5 Signature Flexibility Plans. Each consists of a peak posture plus 10 – 15 postures that lead up to it. Through our systemized approach you will learn how to safely and effectively move into each peak posture as well as be able to teach this to your students.
