something i should have made more visually explicit in the comic of estraven's death is the image of the grieving mother. Genly holding estraven is a callback to the Pietà and other similar works of women holding and weeping over a loved one. Amid all the other cultural references in LHOD, this one stands out to me. Genly is cast as a woman at the climax of the novel, a symbol of not only his changing attitudes but his changing gender identity as well.

Ok it's very funny to laugh at Tuxedo Mask for showing up and doing nothing, but his job was never to actually fight the monsters.
