Having written a lot of decimals by hand recently, I put decimal at the bottom but use a space as the thousands separator, like 363 481.267

That way there's only one punctuation mark in the number so there's no way to confuse the decimal point and the thousands separator.

okay who can tell me why Germany (and Russia?) use comma as a decimal separator and who do I have to kill to make them stop, why didn't America fix this in 1945, this is far worse than the failure to complete denazification given that those guys were all gonna die eventually anyway but this bloody numeric format is still with us

Actually talking about the casual French super reminds me that I had been meaning for a while to talk about my all-time favourite Anglicism, the Canadian adjective le fun -- quite often heard as super le fun, whence the connection.

Obviously, it's a borrowing of the English fun, itself essentially a 20-century word despite a much longer and more sordid past. (I may delve into that in a follow-up, as it's interesting in its own right.) Continental French has also borrowed "fun" as an adjective, although it's quite a bit less popular there, and in France it behaves as a normal adjective: c'est fun, un mec fun, etc. Boring! In Canadian French, it's le fun. That's a definite article! It's also used as a noun, of course, but the adjective has an article, which is mandatory. I don't know of any comparable case in either English or French!

Now, I hear you. Everyone has the same initial reaction: come on, obviously not. Le fun mostly appears as "C'est le fun" or something close to it, so the article means that it's functioning as a noun, right? Obviously it's being used like "he's the life of the party", or "it's the height of boredom". But no: c'est super le fun! It takes adverbs, even if sometimes only with great reluctance (À peine le fun, manifestement le fun, jadis le fun...). Likewise, comparative and superlative degrees exist, although uncommon, and the superlative form "le plus X" behaves as expected: le plus le fun. The article is grammatically inseparable from the rest of the word!

I think this term must have originated as a noun with the sense described above, because it has some suggestive echoes in its usage -- it's strongly biased toward predicative uses (i.e., with a copula; adjectif attribut in French): le hockey, c'est le fun is far more typical than le hockey est un sport le fun. But the latter style (called attributive in English, épithète in French) is nonetheless both permitted and attested, and there are contexts where it sounds more natural than this. It may be a monotreme, but this really, truly is an adjective which just happens to have a vestigial article as organelle. I don't know what happened there but it is so great, I'm really hoping we see things pushed further in the same direction.
