Making change happen: with Nadya Powell
High time we introduced the guests for our Making Change Happen event on 26th October. We heard some incredible examples of innovation at ‘Building a future we can all share’ so we thought this time it made sense to tackle the practical challenges of bringing it about.
Tumblr media
And who better than Nadya Powell to show us how to rock the boat.
Nadya co-founded the excellent Innovation Social meetup. They gather the biggest and brightest minds in the creative industry to accelerate innovation in marketing and advertising. https://innovationsocial.io/
She’s also the founder of a new consultancy called Utopia - whose self-imposed mission to ‘re-wire business for the age of creativity’ which will aid clients to become more agile, innovative and faster to reach the market.  https://www.weareutopia.co/
In the past she’s - held leading roles at agencies Sunshine, Lost Boys, and Dare - campaigned for diversity with The Great British Diversity Experiment & Christmas So White - and judged the Cannes Innovation Lions.
Basically, she’s incredibly accomplished, and we are very lucky she’ll be sharing her perspective on how to make innovation happen in your own organisation. Join us on October 26th  We’ll be discussing ‘making change happen’ in a Bedouin tent near Liverpool Street Station. And we’ll be eating delicious Middle Eastern food prepared by the Damascus Chef. It’s £30, for three courses and BYO drinks too, have you got anything better to do?

Get Your freekeh on!
We’re delighted to introduce the Damascus Chef and our menu for ‘Making Change Happen’ on Thursday October 26th.  “Abdullah Al Awayed, aka Damascus Chef, grew up in a small farming village in Syria's North Easterly Fertile Crescent, in an area that is locally known as the "Jazira" region and lies between the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers.
Tumblr media
Life revolved around raising and tending to the ingredients and hospitality and the overarching importance of making and sharing food was ingrained in the whole community. He left home at 18 for Damascus, over 600 km away.
As a sous chef, and eventually a hotel manager in the old city, he learned the versatility of the each ingredient, without losing touch with his instincts for foraging, herding, growing and rearing his own ingredients and the Bedouin kitchen lore of his childhood.
In 2012, he left Syria with his partner Fabienne, a Londoner, and their son, and after living in Amman for almost a year, they came to live in the UK. At their popups, you'll find Fabienne at front of house and Abdullah working wonders in the kitchen.”
You can find them every Fri 6.30-11 @GoodHope Café, se13 6rt 🌱 🍉 www.damascuschef.com
They are preparing this fabulous menu for our next event, and since we’re in a Bedouin tent we’ll be eating traditionally - expect no shoes and communal eating!

Our clean water filters have arrived in Kompong Khleang!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earlier this year we raised £1500 to help fund a clean water project in Kompong Khleang, a ‘floating village’ on Ton Le Sap lake in Cambodia. The bio-sand filters are intended to ensure families in the village don’t have to drink water directly from the polluted lake. The project is being co-ordinated by local charity Bridge of Life Schools who are working with Water for Cambodia. Water born contaminants are a major killer in Cambodia as this video from Water for Cambodia explains.
youtube
The first batch of filters has now arrived so 35 households and 200 villagers now have access to clean water. For the most part, the filters have been installed successfully and we expect them to have a tremendously positive impact. The project has not been without challenges though. In several cases, the concrete filters were too heavy for the structure of the houses and have had to be stored at ground level. This is not sustainable when the waters rise in the wet season. Alternatives are being explored for the next delivery.
Tumblr media
The family pictured above is one of those who have been selected for this initial pilot. The father's name is Treng and the mothers’ name is Airn. They have six children altogether and the two youngest study at Bridge of Life School. The father is a fisherman and the mother has a small store below her house. Before they collected rain water in tanks but it doesn't last all year long. Now with the bio-sand filter they will have clean water throughout the year.
This project could not have been achieved without the amazing support of 29 Connected Supper Club members and friends. If you were one of them, then thank you again! I hope you share my happiness to see the project progressing. We are staying in touch with Bridge of Life and will report again on progress soon.

We did it! Meet one of the families who will receive a water filter.
Tumblr media
Meet Narann and Phen, and their children Kyreach and Jerous from Outaput. Outaput is a floating village in Komphong Khleang, on the Tonle Sap lake, Cambodia. They are just one of the families who will benefit from our clean water campaign to install bio-sand water filters in family homes. I’m writing this post to mark the closing days of our fundraising campaign, to thank the 28 people who got us this far - and perhaps encourage one or two more donations along the way. Having reached 97% of our target we have come a long way since meeting Paren and Ed from Bridge of Life schools, back in December.
We are delighted that Ed and Paren have been busy putting the groundwork in place. They’ve already recruited an experienced Project Lead with local links and a background working for water charities. And they’ve been busy getting recent visitors to support the campaign too.
Narann is the older brother of Paren, the tour guide who introduced Marina and I to the village. Like most residents of Kompong Khleang, he earns a living from fishing the Tonle Sap. Life is far from easy for Narann, he struggles with mental illness which can prevent him working. There are no local mental health services available to support him either. Phen stays at home caring for their two children.
Narann and Phen struggle to earn enough money to support their family. Their home (pictured) is very simple, constructed from sheet metal and leaves. They don’t have access to clean water, so the bio-sand filter we plan to install will give them the gift of clean water to bathe, do dishes, wash laundry and of course drink.
Naturally, the filter will need maintenance and care, so part of our project involves training, one key aim is to ensure the families who get a filter are able to support each other. This first pilot group will then provide a foundation for us to provide filters for more families.
This is a fantastic first step in improving quality of life and health in the village, and we are planning on collecting data to assess the impact of this pilot. We look forward to reporting back soon. But for now, everyone who has supported this campaign can feel proud of their contribution.
We thank each and every one of you for helping make this happen:

Members of October gallery’s after school programme to share their perspective on building a future we can all share.
Tumblr media
In two weeks time, we’ll be dining at The October Gallery in Holborn to discuss the topic ‘Building a Future We Can All Share’. I don’t want to sound too cheesy but we’re doing that for the next generation, right?   That’s why we’re very pleased to confirm that we’ll be showing a short video called Human, prepared specially for the event by young people who participate in October Gallery’s education programme. It will be presented by Georgie Fay the education lead at the gallery and to accompany the viewing they’ve also prepared an interactive presentation using the gallery as a canvas for their thoughts.
So if you join us on the 24th March you’ll get to see why we’re sharing £5 of every ticket price with them to help support their valuable work.   So now our packed programme for the evening looks like this:
- Welcome with cocktail and canape
- October Gallery Education - Introduction, video, presentation
- Starter ‘Njham svay trey heu’
- Thoughts from futurist author Mark Stevenson
- Main course ‘Amok Trey’
- Thoughts from artist, technologist, and educator, Gawain Hewitt
- Dessert, Caramelised Pineapple and Sticky Rice
We already have 26 confirmed guests so there’ll be plenty of conversation good company company. Reserve your space

Mark Stevenson has many strings to his bow, and this is one of them. He and leading sustainability expert, Ed Gillespie have started a podcast called The Futurenauts - they ask better questions to help us all imagine and build a better future. It’s not about keeping calm and carrying on, no, it’s about getting excited and doing things! Frankly, it’s right up our street and judging by the first episode it’s well worth subscribing!
Join Mark Stevenson, along with Gawain Hewitt, Georgie Fay, and Tom Mansfield, for dinner at the Connected Supper Club on Friday 24th March.

Building a future we can share with the League of Pragmatic Optimists
It’s important to call out the contribution of the League of Pragmatic Optimists to our next event ‘Building A Future We Can All Share’. We are delighted that LOPO co-founders Mark Stevenson and Tom Mansfield make up two of our four special guests. LOPO were the logical choice to collaborate on this theme, the title pretty much sums up their mission statement. So if the idea of building a future we can all share appeals, you should probably find your way to one of LOPO’s events to meet some like minded folk.  http://www.leagueofpragmaticoptimists.org/
Alternatively, come on down to The October Gallery on Friday March 24th and meet them over dinner!

We are very proud to be welcoming Gawain Hewitt to speak at our next Connected Supper Club event - Friday March 24th at The October Gallery. Gawain is an inspirational sound artist, educator, and musician, who takes on many diverse projects and initiatives. He’s a little hard to pin down in a sentence or two so we’ve pulled a selection of his projects to give you a taste of his work and passions.
Pictured above is Gawain on stage at The Web We Want festival last year where he led a hackathon to create accessible instruments http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/kester-brewin/hackers-disabled-musicians_b_7584762.html?utm_hp_ref=uk& A couple of years ago Gawain was in Dhaka working the Dhaka Electronic Scene and artist Schoummo to record soundscapes and create a generative music installation called Conversations.  http://music.britishcouncil.org/news-and-features/2014-11-06/profile-gawain-hewitt
His work with Drake Music on creating musical technology for disabled people has also seen him collaborate with Imogen Heap and Kris Halpin to explore the potential of Mi.Mu gloves  https://www.dezeen.com/2015/02/12/imogen-heap-mi-mu-gloves-help-people-with-disabilities-movie/
Lastly, Musical Time Machines is a collaboration between Gawain, students from Chelsea Community Hospital School, and musicians from Wigmore Hall Learning.  https://musicaltimemachines.wordpress.com/
We hope you’re as excited to hear from Gawain as we are. Reserve your space for dinner and talks at The Connected Supper Club on March 24th.
