final project
Artist Statement:
The World While We Sleep
This project meant a lot to me as it captures something I've always been interested in since I was young: Astronomy and Astrophotography. Astrophotography is not easy, it takes planning, correct exposure, and the right weather conditions. Especially for long-exposure of 3-4 hours. I originally wanted to capture the solar eclipse, but upon security noticing my drone on the site of a solar farm, we were forced to give in my SD cards. I decided to switch over to this idea, and I think it worked out well for me. I feel myself connected with these photos, almost as if I am writing a letter to my younger self showing how we can capture the night sky - in all its beauty. I decided to add photos of the moon to further push this idea of astronomy, as it is hard to see strong constellations in my images. I feel very lucky to get the chance to capture a meteor shower as well, as seen in image #4. I struggled a lot to get the right framing, no or little clouds and the correct amount of star trails. With the moon being in the full moon phase, the night sky was washed out most nights and the only stars seen in the trails were the brightest. I hope everyone can feel connected with astronomy and the unknowing of the stars - as most people do not get to see them so often and in this format.

I attempted to copy the work of Ansel Adams, but since we do not have mountains I tried to capture the beauty of long island through what he might have photographed.

Ansel Adams was a photographer born in 1902 who became well known for his landscapes, specifically of famous National Park landmarks. His photos provided a look into the raw nature of US National Parks - a staple of American culture. His photos were usually shot at a very narrow aperture, which was f/64. Because of this, just about everything in the photo would be in focus. Ansel Adams photographs also helped push the American conservation movement. Lastly, a cool fact about Ansel Adams is that he made his own 'zone system' for developing photos to have a balance of dark, grays and white. This would teach photographers how to balance their photos both in camera with manual settings and in the dark room. Now, we use the zone system in photoshop and or lightroom.
