one of the moments i find most interesting in the stage play is the moment after fiyero and elphaba leave, and the wizard offers glinda a drink of his weird alcohol to "dull the pain." obviously, this is included so that when glinda later finds elphaba's bottle at kiamo ko, she can put two and two together that the wizard is her father. but i also find this interesting in how it shows the parallels and differences between the wizard and glinda
im not the first person to point out that glinda and the wizard are extremely similar characters--both rely on charm and affect to get their way, neither have real magic (well glinda might have it at the end but that's beside the point), both have songs about how people's view of you is what matters, both are lonely rulers who have the love of the people but no real close connections around them. it's really easy to see why glinda would fall so easily into the role of glinda the good because i think on some level, the wizard understands her better than any one else in the cast, and validates her in a way that no one else really does
that being said, i find it so interesting how quickly and immediately glinda rejects the green drink. the wizard self medicates to cope with the loneliness of being the man behind the curtain and not having a family of his own, and i think to some extent glinda's obsession with popularity and incessant need to be liked and praised is a similar form of coping, especially in thank goodness, but where glinda differs from the wizard is that she pulls herself out of this cycle
this is obviously mostly due to her relationship with elphie, and the fact that elphaba forces her out of her privileged bubble and her love of elphie drives her to do the right thing and truly become glinda the good. but i also think that on her own, glinda is just more able to resist her own worst impulses, and more capable of self-reflecting and changing her behavior
so even though she's on the throne and alone at the end of the musical, she's actually nothing like the wizard. she may not have elphie with her, but her love for and relationship with elphaba provide a crutch for her to lean on and a grounding point for her. she's committed to doing real good across oz, rather than being solely concerned with her own social standing. she has the grimmerie, and it's implied that she learns how to read and becomes a real witch
#as much as we as a fandom like to joke about Glindaâs crashouts#in all seriousness I do think she manages to find happiness in her life as Glinda the Good post-canon#and not like fake happiness but genuine happiness#she draws strength from elphieâs memory rather than being consumed by guilt#honestly elphaba strikes me as being more likely to be consumed by guilt than glinda#not because elphaba *should* be consumed by guilt but because thatâs just how she is#Glinda not so much imo#oops I have a lot of post-canon thoughts and this is only semi-related to your post#wicked

I often find myself wondering about the âcatfightâ scene in the movie and if itâs going to be different from the musical. I feel like theyâre going to do away with the slapping, because itâs just too silly and I donât think thatâs the tone they want to go for in the movie. Which begs the question, is it going to be a more serious fight, possibly involving magic? But if so, Elphaba would obviously have the advantage, and I canât imagine her wanting to actually hurt Glinda. Or are they going to do a swordfight-type-thing with the wand and the broom, paralleling the sparring scene in What Is This Feeling? Or some combination of sparring and magic?
These are the questions that keep me up at night.
#wicked#gelphie#I also find myself wondering about the catalyst for the fight#and if itâs going to be less about Fiyero and more about their idealogical differences#but thatâs a whole ânother discussion

When I was like six or seven, I dressed up as Glinda for Halloween and went to a costume party at my school. Some boy made fun of me and told me I wouldnât win the costume contest with that costume. Well it turned out there was a category in the contest for âprettyâ costumes, and I won that.

âJon told me we were going to be making The Wizard Of Oz meets LOTR but what we were really making was the greatest love story that was ever told. That's what we were making. It is about their relationship and [Ariana and Cynthia's] performances inspired me to cut the [OzDust] sequence in a certain way and be really bold and not afraid of silence."

the difference between movie elphaba and book elphaba is that if movie elphaba saw glinda the good berry cereal at the grocery store she'd stare really longingly at glinda's outline for like five minutes as she feels frustration that glinda's image has been reduced to this and glinda has chosen a life of doing cereal ads to support a fascist regime while also missing her and wishing glinda got on the broom with her and hoping that glinda is happy. then she'd buy one box and bring it back to her camp in the woods and put it on the shelf like some sort of sacred relic. if book elphaba saw glinda the good berry cereal she'd complain about how much she hates the taste of glinda the good berry cereal but steal all the boxes from all the stores in a twenty mile radius and if liir tried to take any of her cereal to, you know, feed himself she'd yell at him

nesting box, chapter five
From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Legibility of requisition forms Dear Dr. Upland, please refrain from filling out your requisition forms with a pink glitter pen. It makes them extremely difficult to read. Sincerely, Elphaba Thropp, MD -- Or, Glinda is an overeager dermatology resident with too much time on her hands. Elphaba is a pathology resident who'd rather not deal with dermatologists.
