Female black widows can live up to 3 years but their male counterparts rarely live four months. Some tarantulas live upwards of 20 years. The longest lived spider was around 43 years old when she was cruelly assassinated by a parasitic wasp. Domestic rats have a lifespan comparable to female black widows. To put things into perspective, there are spiders that remember a pre-pandemic world but it is likely every rat on earth was born post-COVID. There could be a spider out there born when Reagan was in office.

went into a wine shop the other day to buy pasta and they did not have pasta but they were doing a wine tasting so i thought what the hell. and got to chatting with the other woman there because we had both just come from the library and were comparing our books and sipping wine and turns out we’re both teachers so we got on the topic of phones in classrooms—and the guy pouring our wine was like ‘that’s actually a point of contention in one of my divorces right now.’

and i very delicately said ‘one of your divorces?’ and his eyes got really big and he said I’M A PARALEGAL

ik people get so mad but honest to god the hill i'll die on is that if you are not willing to put in the effort to properly take care of and healthily maintain your pet you should not have one.

I KNOW i know they're comfort animals that bring you lots of benefits, no matter the creature, but some of you guys are literally causing so much fucking harm to your pets it's unreal.

cats are not meant to be fat and are rather athletic animals that need much more enrichment and exercise than most people are even remotely willing to provide them with.

birds require a lot of precise care and are not meant to be touched or pet in places people love to pet them.

reptiles and amphibians have really strict environmental needs and get stressed super easily.

fish need way more space than most people are willing to give them.

rodents need more space and better environments to safely thrive in than what most people are willing to give them.

different dog breeds require vastly different care methods and environments for peak health and functionality.

contrary to popular belief you CAN'T just adopt an animal and give them the bare minimum (food, water, litter box) and call it good. you NEED to know how to take care of them. you completely control the trajectory of their health and safety.

people are out here hurting and killing their pets and acting like they have a god-given right to do so.

People never seem to want to hang out at animal habitats. If they can’t see something immediately, they just leave. If you’re patient enough to stay, sometimes incredibly magical experiences happen. Like this one.

Those are California condors. Biggest wingspan in North America, incredibly endangered, and the only species with approval from USDA for emergency use of the poultry avian flu vaccine.

Towards the end of the day, once things got quiet, I sat down near where one was foraging and just hung out. Then… they noticed me.

I can only upload one video so I’m going with the one where I was showing them my glasses, since they kept trying to peck at my shoelaces and fingers and I wondered what else they'd be interested in.

They stayed there with me for at least five minutes, given the duration of video I took. Just chilling, watching me, interacting a little. It was just us - nobody else approached. Until eventually they chose to go do their own thing, and I sat there in awe for a while.

It’s worth it to wait, when you can.

It really is wild that some politicians can stand there and say "yeah we're getting rid of a program that keeps quite literally millions of people alive specifically so we can cut taxes for people who are already richer than god" as if it's a normal political stance and not so cartoonishly evil I'm legit shocked perry the platypus doesn't break through the nearest wall the minute the words leave their mouth.
