Does the pursuit of internationalism help solve/address contemporary global issues?
Internationalism is the process in which countries work together and accept collective responsibilities for the challenges that face the world in order to achieve a common goal. One country facing problems such as hunger, poverty, diseases or financial difficulties are not able to put an end to it alone and that is why organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Monetary Fund exist. Countries lose some sovereignty in order to join together and help each other address and attempt to solve issues on a global scale. Developing countries need support from developed countries and it should be in our best interest to that we do everything in our ability to help them. Humanity lives interdependently, meaning we all need support from one another in order to live substantially. Internationalism is a way for nations to cooperate in a bilateral or multilateral way which gives them a chance to benefit from each other, thus forming a relationship.

Rationale
Tumblr media
We have addressed our thesis because our project proves that internationalism has benefited the global citizens of the world.
The research we have found proves our thesis because of organizations that were created in the name of internationalism and the advantages it has implemented. Education, health benefits, and attempted environmental solutions are just some of the benefits internationalism has provided for its citizens. When internationalism is pursued, it provides security and protection on participating nations and a global community is created. An example is the United Nations and NATO.
Evidence from our project that links to the question is how  internationalism has helped citizens transition into a better quality of life from when they were living in poverty and hunger. An example is the World Food Summit whose goal is to reduce the hunger and and poverty by half that exists globally.

Syrian Bombing
Immigration Ban
USA, France, and Britain all joined forces to bomb Syria. The decision to strike came one week after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons against civilians outside Damascus, killing at least 42 adults and children. After that attack, President Donald Trump promised to exact a big price on the Assad regime. These countries hit three targets — including one on the outskirts of Damascus — all related to Syria’s chemical weapons program: a research center, a storage facility, and an equipment facility and command post. These allies used internationalism to promote the execution of their plan to retaliate against Assad and his use of chemical weapons.
President Trump signed an executive order to keep refugees from entering the country for 120 days and immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim nations out for three months. The countries affected are Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. This international policy of one country impacts the predominantly Muslim ones that have no choice but to abide by it.

Desire for economic prosperity
Countries in debt
In order to rise economic prosperity, have stability and security, and foster peaceful relationships among countries, many economists believe that international trade and economic globalization are the solution. The World Trade Organization is a clear policy which reflects this view. It claims to promote peace by resolving conflicts, helping economic growth, and reducing inequality by giving developing nations more of a voice. This is opposed by some critics though because they believe the WTO only helps the developed countries get richer, and the developing countries get poorer.
Jamaica borrowed heavy amounts of money from international organizations such as the World Bank and IMF, dedicated to helping developing countries, and believed they could repay them as the economy grew and tax revenues increased. Unfortunately the economy did not boost, and it became difficult for Jamaica to pay these loans back. Half of Jamaica’s tax revenue was used to pay interest on the loans. Also, the World Bank and IMF required austerity from the country. This meant that services that were usually provided to citizens were cut to reduce the spending of the government.

Women’s rights (education)
Global health crisis
Poverty and world hunger
Although it may seem that every girl has the chance to go to school, this is far from correct. 62 million girls do not attend school because of child labour, early marriage, conflict within countries, cost gender bias, and many more barriers that prevent girls from getting the education that they deserve. Organizations such as the Malala fund give girls around the world, especially in developing nations, a chance to use their right of education. Malala Yousafzai spoke to 193 member countries of the United Nations and asked world leaders to promise that every child will have the right to safe, free and quality primary and secondary education. Advocates like Malala will stand up for these helpless girls through uniting worldwide nations on a matter that affects millions.
Health crises are global issues that impact everyone, no matter who they are. Diseases move around quickly and easily, making everyone vulnerable to it, which is why organization such as The World Health Organization exist. WHO is a United Nations agency at the centre of international efforts which identifies and controls health threats that prevail. An example is when SARS broke out in 2002 and killed nearly 800 people and WHO officials helped coordinate measures that limited the spread of this disease and prevented outbreak from infecting people globally. There is a threat of another pandemic outbreaking soon and so in response, WHO has set up the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network. This international group links different countries plans and their responses to ensure that help will be there in case an outbreak occurs.
Poverty and world hunger is an issue that many people don’t care to pay attention to, but it is something that many people struggle with. In 2006, the World Bank estimated that more than a billion of the 6.65 billion people in the world lived in absolute poverty. Lack of education, lack of necessary resources, discrimination and war are only a few of the causes of poverty. The dilemma identified by Robbins has become the focus of international efforts. 185 countries and the European Community met in Rome of 1996, and the United Nations made the first World Food Summit whose goal was to half the number of people who live in hunger and poverty. Even in developed countries like Canada and America, people still live in poverty and organizations like food banks and drop-in centers helped over 720 000 Canadians alone in March of 2007.

Social media and its effects on teenagers
Privacy and surveillance of citizens
The increased use of social media within this generation has negative consequences which are being seen not only in the US and Canada, but on a global scale. Cyber bullying levels are rising leading to depression within teenagers spiking suicide rates all over the world. International organizations are collaborating to raise awareness about the issues that social media arises and how to resolve conflicts that have emerged as a result of it.
The General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR) is a program that ensures privacy for all citizens within the European Union(EU) and European Economic Area(EEA). The revelation that the National Security Agency(NSA) seems to be collecting the phone records of millions of citizens is shocking, but it is what governments worldwide are relying on widespread and unrestricted surveillance for national security reasons. Although governments worldwide are said to be searching their citizens devices for security reasons, it is important to remember to secure a person’s devices by using encrypted apps, covering up webcams on laptops and PCs, keeping devices updated, etc.

Climate change
Air pollution
Climate change is continuous issue that scientists are concerned about due to its detrimental environmental effects such as sea levels rising, threatening to take cities such as New York under water all due to ice melting up North in Greenland. To prevent a situation like this from arising, international agreements have been put in place to limit global temperature increases such as the Kyoto Protocol. It includes 38 developed countries which have committed to reducing emissions by at least 18% below 1990 levels. The Paris agreement was a legally binding treaty signed in order to keep the increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels; and to limit the increase to 1.5 °C, since this would substantially reduce the risks and effects of climate change.
