ψ— ANNIE SWALLOWS. SHE REMEMBERS BEING YOUNG ONCE, like primrose, in which the world was so much smaller and hope was not as fleeting. it was a simpler time and it was easy to turn a blind eye to the unspeakable when it didn’t touch her world. but now things are different. now they sit in district 13, waiting as soldiers flood in and out across the districts, as katniss films propaganda, and as president snow seeks to silence them. hope almost does not fit into a world where they are so greatly outnumbered and overpowered, yet annie finds herself smiling all the same. primrose’s certainty is comforting. “ if we win things will change... children from the districts won’t have to be afraid. parents, either, ” she says softly. “ and we can... ” not go home. their homes are gone now. “ ... make a home. ”

ψ— THE SEA IS QUIET TODAY, ROLLING SOFTLY over the surface of the sandy beach. it grazes her bare feet from time to time, and within that act she doesn’t recoil. the water is comforting, along with the salted air, and the way the sun dances over the ocean’s surface. it’s home. she’s home. but her mind is elsewhere. it retracts here or there, so much so she almost misses the footsteps of an approaching figure. she might have jumped, but she recognizes them. and it allows her shoulders to relax. “ finnick. are you here to fish ? ? ? ”

ψ— “ THREE DAYS. ” ANNIE WRINGS THE DAMP RAG in her hands, the cold water drizzling back into the basin. her eyes, distant by default most days, focus sternly to effie. a game of back and forth, as the noises and echoes of what came before goad her to remember, yet the urgency of the now keeps her grounded in the present. it overrides her fear. “ a weapons test went wrong ... and there was a big boom. an explosion. not bad, but enough to shake the walls, and you were knocked down. ” down, down, down. annie shudders as she recalls watching effie tumble, followed by the crippling fear of seeing blood where her head had collided. there had not been much; just a scrape along her brow. not like ...

       ANNIE DABS THE RAG TO EFFIE’S FOREHEAD, gentle and mindful of the stitched and bandaged wound. a low exhale follows. “ katniss and haymitch and the others have been coming in to check up on you in that time. i convinced katniss to sleep, so i took this shift ... ”

You passed out.          Effie’s head still felt dizzy, she was tired and would have loved to sleep for another couple of days. For a moment, the former escort didn’t know where she was, but as she became more and more aware of her surroundings, the strawberry blonde began to remember just where she was. However, she had no idea what had happened. One second she was feeling perfectly fine, the next one she’s missing some memories and can only remember waking up. Groggily, Effie focussed on the younger woman, Annie, sitting by her side. It was a truly comforting thing to focus on.

“What happened?“ Her voice sounded so foreign. Almost as if it didn’t belong to her. “How long have I been unconscious?”
