Mazatlan Feb'18 Amazing ocean and sunset views, long walks on wide warm beaches, scrumptious shrimp, fresh guacamole and salsa and tasty margaritas and cold beer to wash it down; quaint colonial villages, interesting tequila factory in the middle of large plantations of blue agave, first time horse riding, all made a wonderful vacation.

Last day in Austria: we visited Schwanenstadt, the 400 years old, 4000 inhabitants town where I lived 25 years ago. Vasi, our gracious host, gave us a tour of the central zone of Linz, already decorated for Christmas. We ended the day with a delicious Italian dinner. Good bye Austria! Los Angeles, here we come!

We started the day attending the mass at the local evangelic church with our hosts, followed by a lunch at the communal table: stuffed cabbage. sausage and sour washed down with Austrian beer. In the afternoon we visited Salzburg's treasures: the 400 years old cathedral, the birthday house of Mozart and the thousand years old Hochsalzburg fortress.

Today we walked to the Attersee to admire the swans and the water hens who winter here because they are fed by the community. We learned about the Celtic prehistoric inhabitants of this area who lived in piled houses by the lakes in Austria. Unfortunately the famous painter's Gustav Klimt Center was closed. On our way home. we admired a few cute rabbits. We ended the day with a fun and delicious dinner at the neighborhood gasthaus, with authentic local food. Then we savoured Claudia's home made apfel strudel. We met Vlad's German teacher of his 5th grade. She remembered that Vlad was the only student out of the immigrants's group that passed the German language test. This made me once more proud of him!

We took a trip to Gmunden by Traunsee. We drove through mountains passes where we experienced the first snow of the year. After a few minutes of playing in the snow, we decided that this snow experience will be enough for us for the entire year. We visited the Toscana Schloss (Castle) of 500 years old. It was in full decoration for the Christmas with floating nativity scene and Christmas trees floating on the lake. The sad part is that almost all restaurants are closed in the afternoon and it is almost impossible to have a late lunch.

Our first day in Upperaustria was full of new experiences: delicious food cooked by our gratious Austrian friends of romanian origin, Austrian bakery, meats and deserts washed down with palinca (two sorts of Romanian plum moonshine), white snd red Italian wines. Our friend gave us a ride around lake Attersee, the largest and deepest lake in Austria, 250 m deep. We saw the Putin villa and property by the lake, the place I lived 25 years ago in Wairegg, a small village by the lake. In spite of freezing temperatures we hiked on a mountain trail toward a cascade, but we had to return before reaching the cascade due to closed access by this time of the year. After an unsuccessful try to find an open restaurant, we paid a short visit to the marina by the Attersee Lake where our friend Vasile keeps his boat during summer, we returned home where Claudia, our host was waiting with a hot tasty soup and delicious sarmale (cabbage leaves stuffed with ground pork and beef and veggies).
