하늘을 나는 하얀 쥐(Flying white Mouse) illustration by kangto 동양의 풍습으로 2020년은 쥐의 해입니다 12간지 중 가장 작고 약하지만 똑똑하여 첫번째로 지정된 동물이 쥐입니다. 흔히, 한반도에서는 근하신년이라 하여 복된 한해를 시작하라는 의미로 하늘을 가득채우는 새로운 태양, 크고 넓은 산을 가로 지르며 두루미들이 유유히 날아가는 그림을 선물하지만, 올해를 여는 똑똑한 흰쥐는 두루미 등에 올라타 해를 올려놓고 금강산을 휜히 내려볼것 같습니다.

귀향길(The way back home)

올 설날에도 고향으로 내려가는 기차표를 구할 수가 없었다. 코레일 홈페이지에 들어가자마자 표는 이미 매진이다.

아이돌 콘서트 티켓 구하기도 이보다는 쉬울 거다… 하는 수 없이 버스를 타고 머나먼 길을 가야 하는데 어두운 고속도로 위로 빨간 개미 떼처럼 줄을 지어 가는 차들 속에 갇혀있을 생각만 해도 눈앞이 아득해진다. 그래도 저 힘든 길을 가야 한다. 저 산 너머에는 뭐가 있길래 이렇게 먼 길을 가야 할까? 그리고 저 북녘 땅으로도 그  힘든 길을 왜 가려고 하는 걸까? 내가 나고 자란곳이자 내가 사랑하는 가족들이 기다리는 곳이라면 힘든 길이라도 가야 하는거다.

올해는 북쪽으로도 줄 지어진 빨간 개미떼들을 보고싶다.

I couldn't get a train ticket down to my hometown this year. Tickets are already sold out as soon as they enter the KORAIL website. It would be easier to get tickets for an idol concert. I have to take a bus and go a long way, but it's hard to think of being stuck in a row of red ants on a dark highway. But I have to go that hard way. What's beyond that mountain, so should we go so long? And why do you want to go the hard way to that northern land? Where I grew up and where my beloved family awaits You have to go even the hardest way. This year, I would like to see a group of red ants lined up to the north.

설, 김일성 광장에서( Korean New Year's Day at Kim il Sung Square )

한반도의 설은 남북이 함께 쉬는 날입니다. 제기차기, 팽이치기, 연날리기, 윷놀이. 명절놀이도 함께 하지요. 이번 설에는 전에는 없던 물건이 있네요. 눈치채셨나요? 맞아요. 남한 국기 풍선입니요. 이제 왕래가 자유롭거든요. 내년 설에는 광화문 광장에서 일출을 맞이할까 합니다.

Korean New Year is a day when the two Koreas rest together. Kick-up, spinning top, flying a kite, playing a game. We also play holiday games. This year, there are some things that were not there before. Did you notice? Right. It's a South Korean flag balloon. we are free to come and go now. Next year we will have a sunrise at Gwanghwamun Square.

왜 겨울에 눈대신 비만 오는가.

(Why does it always rain on Seoul. Not Snow)

딸: 엄마 우리도 겨울인데 왜 눈은 안오고 비만 와? 강원도는 눈 온다며~ 엄마: 그만큼 안 추운가 보지. 딸: 난 춥거든? 춥다고. 근데 왜 비야? 엄마: 왜 안와~ 네가 태어난 날, 그때가 2010년 이니까... 아무튼 그때 눈이 얼마나 많이왔는데. 서울에 30센치쯤 왔지~ 차도 못다니고 진통도 오고 그래서 큰일날뻔했지. 네가 눈을 모시고 오는구나~ 했었지. 후후 딸: 아니~ 그때 난 기억도 못하잖아. 왜 이렇게 비만 오냐고... 추우면 눈오는거 아냐? 서울은 원래 눈 안와? 내 기억엔 찔끔 날리는 눈 밖에 못봤는걸? 엄마: 그러게 덜추운날만 뭐가 내리네 이렇게... 나도 보고싶다. 눈 펑펑와서 쌓인거~ 눈쌓이면 여기도 참 예쁜데. 딸: 망했어…

2010년 이후로 서울에선 10센치 이상 쌓인 눈을 보지 못했다. 2017년의 기록적인 한파때도 그런 눈은 오지 않았다. 그리고 2020년 1월 첫째주 부터 또 장대비가 내렸다. 언제쯤 눈쌓인 서울을 걸어볼까. 아직 겨울이 남았으니 기대해봐도 되겠지?

눈내린 광화문(Snow falls on Gwanghwamun)illustration bykangto

12월 매서운 추위와 함께 겨울이 찾아오면 어떤날은 서울 광화문에도 끝없는 눈이 내리기도 합니다. 거인같이 거대한 세종대왕의 황금빛 동상에 눈은 하얗게 내려앉고 광화문 기와를 덮어 성문의 실루엣만 남기기도 합니다. 하지만 광화문 광장에 세종대왕과 이순신 장군, 대한민국이 거기 그대로 있다는것을 모두 알고 있습니다.

이제는 한국사람뿐만이 아닌 여러나라의 외국인들도 모두 알고있습니다. 그들은 한국스러운 한복을 아름답게 갖춰입고 기억속에 한국을 담고 싶어 합니다. 눈이 너무 많이 내린다고 해도 그들에겐 전혀 상관없습니다. 소복히 쌓인눈은 더 신비롭고 다양한 풍경을 드러내고 그들이 알지 못했던 겨울 의복을 알 수 있음이 더 큰 기쁨일겁니다

차분히 내려앉은 눈아래 우직하게 그 자리에 있는 한국의 공기를 기억에 담아갑니다.

When winter comes along with the bitter cold in December, some days endless snow falls on Gwanghwamun in Seoul. The giant golden statue of King Sejong, sits white and covers the Gwanghwamun roof tiles, leaving only the silhouette of the gate. However, we all know that King Sejong the Great, Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the Republic of Korea are still there in Gwanghwamun Square.

Now, not only Koreans but also foreigners from many countries know. They are beautifully dressed in Korean hanbok and want to contain Korea in their memory. Even if it snows too much, it doesn't matter to them at all. It would be a greater pleasure to be able to see the mysterious and diverse landscapes and to know the winter clothing that they did not know.

논썰매(Sledding in Paddy field)illustration byppassu

온 세상이 꽁꽁 얼어붙어버릴 만큼 추운 겨울이 오면 아이스 링크장 처럼 맨들 하게 잘 얼어있던 논바닥이 생각난다. 농한기 때라 논썰매는 아버지가 직접 만들어 주셨는데 나무판자에 썰매 날은 굵은 철사로 달고 손잡이 아래는 못을 박아 놓은 멋진 썰매였다. 아버지가 만들어 주신 거라 왠지 더 잘나가는듯했다. 북한의 겨울도 우리와 마찬가지로 논썰매를 타고 노는 아이들이 있었다. 썰매의 모양이나 타는 모습도 어린 시절 우리의 모습과 같았다. 여전히 우리와 닮아있는 그들의 모습 속에서 어린 시절 추웠지만 따뜻한 날을 보냈던 장면이 떠오른다.

When the winter comes cold enough to freeze the whole world, I think of Paddy field that has been frozen well like an ice rink. It was a nice sled that my father had made sled during the dry season, with sled wires on wooden boards and nails under the handles. My father made it somehow seemed to be doing better. In the winter of North Korea, there were children who played on sledding. The shape and ride of the sled was the same as our childhood. In their resemblance to us, I recall a scene where I spent a cold but warm day in my childhood.

북한에서는 문신을 입묵찍기라고 부른다. 타투머신이 없기에 옛날 방식대로 바늘에 먹을 찍어서 하나씩 찍으면서 문신을 새기기 때문이 아닐까한다. 입묵문화는 남자들이 대체로 군대에 있을때 많이 찍는데 주로 남성성과 조국에 대한 충성심이 드러나는 글과 그림들을 찍는다. 어떤 입묵그림들을 찍는지 상상하며 하나씩 찍어서 북한의 입묵을 그려봤다. 타투는 나라마다 특색이 있는데 하나가 된 한반도에도 그런 특색이 있는 입묵문화가 생겨나길 바란다.

In North Korea, tattoos are called “ink chopping”. Since there is no tattoo machine, it may be because the tattoo is engraved while taking one by one. The ink culture often takes a lot of men when they are in the army, mainly writing and paintings that show masculinity and loyalty to the country. I imagined what kind of ink paintings I took, and I took pictures one by one to draw the ink of North Korea. Tattoos are unique to each country, and we hope that a Korean-style ink culture will be created on the Korean peninsula.

축구에서 등번호 7번의 선수는 그 팀의 에이스에게 배정되었다. 대부분 축구경기에서 승부를 결정지을 수 있는 승부처가 측면에서 이루어지기 때문에 발이 빠른 윙어의 번호인 것이다. 10월 15일 평양 김일성경기장에서 열렸던 남북 남자 축구대표의 경기는 1990년 10월에 열렸던 통일축구 이후 29년 만에 치러진 경기였다. 그만큼 기대가 컸던 이 경기가 무관중, 무중계로 진행되는 모습이 최근 지지부진한 남북의 모습과 닮아있어서 더 아쉬움이 남았다. 영국리그(EPL) 토트넘에서 뛰고 있는 손흥민 선수와 이탈리아리그(SERIE A) 유벤투스 소속으로 있는 북한의 한광성 선수와의 대결구도 보다 에이스인 두 선수가 남북한 단일팀으로 뛰고 있는 모습을 상상해 보라. 아시아의 맹주가 아니라 세계정상급 팀으로 한 단계 더 올라 설 수 있을 거라고 본다. 이런 단일팀이 없었던 게 아니다. 1991년 포르투갈에서 열린 제 6회 세계청소년축구선수권대회(U-20)에서 남북한 단일팀으로 출전을 한 적이 있다. 과거에도 축구로도 통일을 이룬 날이 있었는데 미래라고 못할 건 아니지 않는가. 가까운 미래에는 남북한단일팀으로 하나가 된 팀의 축구경기를 응원하고 싶다.

남과 북이 공통으로 인식하는 우리의 뿌리는 ‘단군 숭배 사상’이다.

2011년 7월 10일 프랑스 르몽드지는 ‘남북한의 공통 분모’라고 표현했다. 남과 북은 떨어진 시간 만큼 다른 역사를 쓰고 있지만 같은 뿌리의 역사�� 기억 한다는건 참으로 다행스런 일이다. 뿌리가 같으니 언제고 더불어 살 수 있을 것이다. 다가올 시대에 단군을 기리는 개천절은 중요한 기념일이다.

올해 추석때에는 대황소상 씨름대회를 남조선동지들과 함께 진행했더랬지요. 남쪽동지들 규칙을 따라서 모랫바닥에서 해봤는데 이거이 영 폐롭소야? 전년도 우승했던 평양출신 동지는 “만약 내가 진다면은 이 모랫바닥때문이야”라고 말하고서는 곧바로 져버렸다지요. 하하 내년에는 우리식으로 해보자요.

祖國을 위한 촛불(Candles for the motherland)illustration bykangto

서초동에 다시 촛불들이 모였습니다. 2016년 나라를 바로 잡기 위한 큰 촛불이 있었고 이제는 새로운 정의로 변질된 정의를 잡아가기 위한 또 다른 여정을 시작했습니다. 조국 법무부장관이자 부인과 자녀를 둔 한 가정의 가장을 위해 모였습니다. 악의적인 명분을 숨길수 있도록 가공된 심판대에서, 비루하고 구시대적인 정의를 고쳐나가기 위한 힘겨운 여정에 동참하기 위해서이다. 촛불은 조국 법무장관을 빗대어 祖國을 위해 높이 들어올리고 어두운 밤하늘을 민주주의로 다시 한번 밝힐것이다.

Candles gathered again in Seocho-dong. In 2016, there was a big candle to correct the country, and now we have set out on another journey to grasp the altered definition into a new one. We gathered for the head of the home of our homeland attorney general, wife and children. To join the arduous journey to revise ugly, old-time justice at the umpires that have been crafted to hide malicious causes. The candlelight will be lifted high for the Republic of Korea under the secretary of state, and the dark night sky will once again be democratic.
