Surfing, Ocean Optional Spring in Boise means many great things: warm weather, buffed out single-track, Spring skiing and the start of whitewater season. While there’s no shortage of world class whitewater out our back door, the Boise River Park has turned into a hot spot for water lovers of all stripes. What caught our eye this Spring has been videos surfacing online of people surfing the Boise River at the park. We knew it was time for a Core Concepts company field trip.
First stop was Idaho River Sports for boards, and more importantly, knowledge. With plenty of experience on the river, we already had the necessary wet suits, PFD’s and helmets essential for anyone planning to spend time in 45 degree water. Pam from IRS helped get us up to speed on the right boards for use on the river. While more advanced surfers prefer shorter, shaped fiberglass boards; two great options to get started are the Glide Sesh and Lochsa boards. The Lochsa (shown in the photo) is a downriver board that’s also able to play in the park. The Sesh is a shorter, wider board made specifically to play in the waves and was our weapon of choice for the day. Idaho River Sports offers rentals on the necessary equipment and boards. Additionally, IRS offers stand up paddle board classes, which are recommending before hitting the water. We took the Sesh out to the park and had a great time getting into the wave and getting a feel for it. While we’re a long way from pro, it’s easy to get hooked. With the right equipment and instruction, you too can enjoy an after-work surf session even if you don’t have the ocean at your backdoor. Want to see surfers of all ages killing it at the Boise River Park? Check out the Idaho River Sports Facebook Page. Idaho River Sports offers equipment rentals and demos as well as stand up paddle board classes, all of which are recommending before hitting the water.
Enjoy!

To Keep Dry, Add A Little Heat At Core Concepts, we love to hear stories of how our gear has gotten you out of sticky situations everywhere from the neighborhood pub to the other side of the world. To craft the finest adventure apparel on the planet, we build both durability and performance into every garment. One of the key technologies used to keep the Whiskey River shirt beer-proof, Action Jean muck-free or Cowboy Pow Jacket dry is a fabric finish technology commonly referred to as DWR (durable water repellant). To keep your favorite Core style looking good after hundreds of adventures and its DWR treatment performing at the highest level, it’s best to follow the care instructions on the label. One of the key things to keeping your DWR functioning and the fabric breathing well is to make sure every day dirt and body oils are periodically removed from the garment. Grime on both the surface and interior of the fabric can inhibit its breathability and prevent the DWR from keeping you stain and spill free. There’s one additional maintenance step that isn’t commonly done, since most of our garments are line dry recommended, and that is to use heat from the dryer to refresh the DWR. We recommend drying the garment no more than 15 minutes on low to medium heat with a frequency of once every 2-3 months, depending on use. These simple steps will keep you beer proof and looking good for months to come. Adventure on, Noah

The Core Concepts team trekked to McCall last Friday to shoot next years winter line. We started the morning off at 7 am in the snow but warmed up over beers at Salmon River Brewery. The crew let us jump in at the brewery and even gave our models a quick brewing lesson. After lunch at the brewery, we headed out to the lake for more set ups. Who knew creating a picture perfect fire could be so challenging?! There were only a few tears shed in our final shots of the day. The jury is still out whether our models were sad the shoot was over or the smoke from our scenic fire was too intense. Here is a sneak peek from behind the scenes.

If you're an adventure junkie, this book is a must-read!

It seems like common sense that if you want to lose weight and be healthy, running is a quicker way to get there than walking. However, as The New York Times points out, in some cases, walking provides a lot of the same benefits without the difficulty.
