Intertextuality in Music Videos
Intertextuality is the usage or referencing of one media text by another.
This may come as direct nods to another piece of media: Chris Brown's 'She Ain't You' has the singer wearing numerous different costumes reminiscent of Michael Jackson, as well as Brown dancing in a similar way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V2GzYcRK9E.
Or more subtly, as the video had been 'inspired' by an existing text. Seen here in 'Titanium': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRfuAukYTKg. The whole music video references old 80s adventure films in which children fill the main cast and coincided with the release of Super 8, a Spielberg film.
Intertextuality is used as it expands the target audience of the music video, as fans of one media text might want to watch the video as they will like to see their beloved franchise referenced.
In my music video, I reference the frontman of the Smiths, Morrissey, by having a costume inspired by his branded 'look' (an open, flowing shirt and dandelions stuffed in his belt).

Categories of Music Videos
Illustration: Visuals and lyrics clearly link. Concept based 'narrative' videos fit into this classification. See 'Shape of You' by Ed Sheeran: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGwWNGJdvx8
Amplification: A certain part of the lyrics is focussed on and 'amplified'. Music videos that are more 'artistic' than 'narrative' are usually described as amplification. 'Bad Habits' by Ed Sheeran is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orJSJGHjBLI
Disjuncture: The visuals seen on screen don't match the lyrics at all. A music video of the band performing. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxuEtL7gxoM

Laura Mulvey's theory suggests that music videos always represent the perspective of a heterosexual male, objectifying women through the 'male gaze'. She also says that women in music videos are always negatively portrayed, either as an innocent 'virgin' or a hypersexualised 'whore'.

Questionnaire Analysis:
Around 67% or 2/3 of the questionnaire answers were from 17 year old females, with around half of that number (33.33%) being males of that same age range.
A vast majority of the answerers thought that one of the most important parts of music videos are their visuals/aesthetic and the artist's confidence in doing something different ("stepping out of their comfort zone.") Music videos that have bland visuals and have overplayed genre tropes are seen as less interesting to the audience than ones that try to subvert expectations and conventions.
100% of the people who answered the questionnaire would support the inclusion and representation of the LGBT community if they appeared in a music video. Going off of this, I am sticking with my original idea of showing a homosexual relationship in the narrative rather than a heterosexual one.
As well as this, they would like to see the music video set in an urban area, as it fits with the genre more than the countryside.

Illustrative, Amplification and Disjuncture Music Videos
Illustration: Lyrics/music video contain a complete narrative. Usually a short story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lK4cX5xGiQ Amplification: Taking a theme from the lyrics of a song, or a line, and expands on that theme for the music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbfeH6Q8PzY Disjuncture: Video has no relation to the music or lyrics (e.g. a live performance). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxuEtL7gxoM
