THE SIXTH OF THE "APES" FILMS - AND THE BEST! In 1977, a group of teenage friends from North London recreated the world of the Planet Of The Apes in a short 8mm film that revealed the untold story of how Cornelius, Dr Zira and Dr Milo fled the imminent destruction of Planet Earth. Made on a shoestring budget over the course of the year and featuring home-made makeup, costumes, props and scenery, CORNELIUS AND ZIRA forms a bridge between the sci-fi classics BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES and ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES. Helmed by lifelong puppeteer David Barclay, who went on to bigger and better things as a world-famous animation, motion-capture and puppetry professional in such epics as The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Cats And Dogs among many others. The main cast comprised of David Barclay as Cornelius and Jackie Lawrence as Zira, with Gary Cook (your host) as Milo, Ernest Morris as the devious Dr Zaius and Frank Seymour as gorilla soldier Aboro. Produced and directed by David Barclay, who also created the prosthetic makeup in the style of the great John Chambers.
This collection includes screenshots, behind-the-scenes photographs, original props and script ideas and a few animated screenshots you might have seen on my main Apes blog, ARCHIVES OF THE APES. Bear in mind that the original movie is on 8mm film and that many of these shots are third- or fourth-generation copies, so the quality may sometimes be a bit ropy.
Wishing the lovely Jackie Lawrence, our very own Dr Zira in our fan film Cornelius And Zira, a very happy birthday. Here she is in 1977 in the exotic and luxurious filming locations of Edmonton and Epping.
Also appearing are Dave Barclay as Cornelius and Gary Cook as Milo.
Me (Gary), aka Dr Milo, 1975, aged 14, demonstrating the prosthetic makeup process during the creation of The Skull. Until this week I quite literally hadn’t seen this since 1977, so it was a nice surprise when it turned up during one of Dave’s Burbank lockdown clearouts.
The Skull, the precursor to Cornelius And Zira. Followed pretty much the same storyline except there’s no Zira in it. Made in 1975 by four schoolboys on a budget that wasn’t so much shoestring as dental floss. As you can see, we hadn’t quite perfected the makeup processes yet (or how to focus the camera).
