I am a victim of childhood sexual assault.
Fifteen years later, it’s still weird to type those words, and there’s a lot of doubts I have about them. Should I say “victim” or should I say “survivor”? Should I call it “childhood sexual assault”, or should I call it “rape”? “I AM a victim of childhood sexual assault”, or “I WAS victim of childhood sexual assault”? Truth be told, classifying exactly what it was that happened to me in words that will mean to the person I’m communicating with what they mean to me is one of the things that I still struggle with the most.
At the age of eight or nine years old, I was coerced into having sex that I didn’t want or understand by a boy who was old enough to know better, but not old enough to understand the gravity of what he was doing. I wasn’t “sexually assaulted” in the sense that I was physically damaged from the assault. I was groomed. I was tricked into thinking that I wanted it; that I was a willing partner in the activity.
For years, I struggled with even classifying it as sexual abuse. I mean, others who had experienced sexual abuse experienced things far worse than I had. Did I have a right to the label of “Childhood Sexual Assault Victim” when what had been done to me paled in comparison to the experiences of those who had been abducted and raped every day? Was there any comparison between what was done to me and what was done to others? I now believe that the answer isn’t as black and white as I used to think. Yes, there’s a comparison, in the sense that the psychological damage is eerily similar, but at the same time there’s really not much of a comparison at all - and I’ve learned to be okay with that. Actually, I’ve learned a lot of things as a result of the trauma that I experienced, and I’m hoping that by outlining those things in this blog, it’ll help someone who is experiencing one of the many different stages of the healing journey that I have walked - and am still walking.
My goal is to write about my journey and the stages that I took from abuse to healing in the order that they happened for me. Keep in mind that everyone’s journey will look different and not everyone experiences all of these things in the same order, or even experiences all of them at all. I also hope to point out specific things that have helped me along the way, and I hope that the things that I have learned will help others who are going through this journey themselves, or are helping something they love go through this journey.
I hope that this blog will reach somebody who needs to hear what I have to say. I hope that it will help them on their healing journey. And if that person is you, I hope that you will come to a place where you have experienced the fullness of God’s healing power in your life.
I can’t say why things like this happen to other people, but what I do firmly believe is that God allowed me to experience it because He wanted me to use that pain to help other people who are experiencing similar things. If that person is you, I want you to know that God is a mighty God, that He is a God of healing and restoration, and that He will never leave you to walk this path alone. He has been the backbone of my healing journey, and I know that I could not be at a place where I’m about to bare my soul and the intimate details of my own journey if it weren’t for His love and compassion in my life. I pray that He will heal you too.
One last thing to note before we jump in: There are a lot of people in this story, including my abuser, who contributed to the pain that I’ve experienced that was directly related to the abuse. I will be changing their names in this blog, because this blog is not about them. It is about God, me, and the redemptive work that He did in my life and that He can do in the lives of others.

Marie Kondo is full of anecdotes about the weird ass shit that she not only lets people keep but encourages them to elevate in their lives. She says one of her clients ended the process with a bedroom full of vintage pinball machines because what sparks joy in that particular woman was basically sleeping in the middle of an arcade.
Marie Kondo would never make you throw away your weird shit! She wants you to pare down to just your weird shit.
