I feel like I'm progressively losing my mind logging on to Tumblr and seeing people say things like "wow, I wish we knew how splitting and switching worked, too bad DID is so under researched :("
My friend. Respectfully. We know both of those things.
We know way more about DID than the internet would lead you to believe. We know how DID forms initially, how alters split afterwards, what happens on a psychological and neurobiological level when switching, we know what kinds of trauma will cause DID and what kind of trauma cause specific alter types, we know what leads to specific presentations of DID, we know how DID presents across the lifespan, so on and so forth.
Basically all of this stuff is covered in the theory of structural dissociation. You know, that scientific theory everyone loves to name drop but no-one actually reads? You should read it. Find a PDF of The Haunted Self or Coping With Trauma-Related Dissociation. You will find basically everything you want to know.
DID was first added to the DSM-III in 1980 (although under a different name). But we've been studying dissociative personality systems since the early 1900s, and even that was based on earlier work in related areas. The theory of structural dissociation is essentially a compilation of all the research on trauma and dissociation from the past century, and it has been continuously expanded upon and validated by modern day research involving things like neuroimaging techniques. The references section of The Haunted Self alone is 48 pages long.
There is so much research out there. There is so much information publicly shared by credible professionals that can educate you on this disorder. Don't just assume we don't know the answers to your questions if you haven't even checked if the answers are out there.
Of course we don't know everything. But DID is certainly not this completely mystical disorder that no-one understands.

So I really like "Radar writes the in-universe version of MASH" as a headcanon, but Frank writes a thinly fictionalized memoir of his time in the 4077th to inspire a future generation of Army doctors and it becomes a smash hit in the 60s because people think it's a satire when it's really just his incredibly skewed perspective.
His protagonist Ernest Frost is a tough no-nonsense country doctor who learned frontier medicine on his pappy's knee and has to learn how to work with hot shot draftees from the big city hospitals and their fancy shmancy techniques. He either amalgamates BJ and Trapper into one character ("TJ") or he like just switches the characters half way through (JT becomes TJ) and spends like half a page explaining then never mentions it again and people think this is commentary on how the army turns everyone into replaceable cogs. He writes himself into a tragic love triangle between Ernest's loving but cold wife and the passionate but unpredictable nurse he meets in Korea, but critics always note the homoerotic tension between Ernest and his bratty rival "Pathfinder Polk". Some well meaning high school freshman sends him handwritten gay fanfic about his self insert and his Hawkeye expy and he literally has a stroke. He's portrayed by Alan Alda in a popular TV adaptation of his novel.

Hi everyone. In April 2025, I found my mother passed away by suicide. She was on a waitlist for Six Months for the scarce free mental health services they have here. She passed away while waiting
Generally in Canada, if you want long term talk therapy, you have to pay unless you have benefits through workor school. In the United States, I know many of you don't even have the chance at all, including people in other countries too. Please consider signing to help me enact global change and ensure lives, like my mom's, don't become a statistic.
Please support by rebloggjng and sharing. This cause is near and dear to my heart. Please support, we can make a different

Good News! 6-month PrEP (Hiv Prevention) EXISTS.
So, the above is an official press release, but it links to third party sources. WE ARE SEEING THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF HIV.
There's still a long fight to go, but TLDR, 6-month pre-exposure prophylaxis, a twice-yearly shot to prevent receiving an HIV infection? Is INCREDIBLE. Add this to the 9-count of folks who we have successfully CURED of HIV, and indeed, we can see the trajectory of the disease hopefully leading truly towards its own demise. If you're someone who regularly engages in hookups / is among higher risk populations, and you have the resources for this? Keep an eye out. Similarly, I'm pretty confident from the way this press-release is worded that a generic will be on the way sooner than you think. Even if this only starts circulating amongst clients with money, reducing circulation of HIV generally is still vital and beneficial.

the way besides everything else data seems to take some sort of comfort in his "inability" to experience emotions because that way he can convince himself that whatever it is that is currently affecting him Cannot affect him, so he can compartmentalize it. because if he HAS emotions then he has to FEEL THEM and what are you even supposed to DO when your brother kills your dad? or when a child calls for help and you cannot answer? or when your daughter is being taken away and she dies in your arms, and she has barely lived and so much of her life was sadness? what do you do? how do you handle it? it's truly a blessing that you don't have to. it's fortunate that you do not have emotions. because if you did they would ruin you. It’s great that you don't. it's curious how you keep returning to them in your thoughts. maybe you need to run a diagnostic.

I'm gonna be real with you, i don't think weirdo kinksters should be considered acceptable collateral damage when banks/credit card companies enforce adult content bans on sites like patreon and ko-fi

we get to try again tomorrow, little by little, without burning ourselves out. do it, just don’t push it too much. do it scared, but don’t force yourself through something terrifying or else you’ll end up petrified. it’s okay to go in baby steps. they still count as moving forward

ADHD culture is not being considering “disabled enough” to have your disability taken seriously, and being told you’re just “lazy”.
