Max's reviews - Black Magic M-66
Year - 1987
Length - 1 ep., 47 min.
Rating - NR
My rating - 9/10
It's November, which means it's anime watching season. The theme for this year is cyberpunk and the brainrot has already begun so get ready.
I started off this year very strong with one of my new favorites, Black Magic M-66. It follows a freelance reporter named Sybel who, in search of a story, discovers a military robot after a young girl named Farris. Being the only one aware of Farris' whereabouts, she must try to protect her.
This is one of the very few anime that kept me on the edge of my seat. Despite it's length, this OVA doesn't feel very rushed. The short time actually adds to it, giving them no time to focus on anything unimportant. Thus it is very suspenseful as the main characters are always on the run, having no time to catch a breath.
The animation, soundtrack, and sound design for this OVA are all absolutely gorgeous. The sound effects are so crisp and realistic, and paired with the beautiful animation and sometimes eerie soundtrack, it's truly an immersive masterpiece.
Another thing I absolutely love about this OVA is the mannerisms of the M-66 itself. It's inhuman in a disturbingly human way, moving sometimes as a human would and sometimes in ways humans could never.
The last thing I have to say is that this anime was surprisingly not very gory or explicit, much to my delight. It's very difficult to find a cyberpunk anime that isn't excessively gory or explicit. There is a lot of blood, a lot of deaths, yet none of it is super detailed.
Below the cut I am going to put a list of content advisories.
The most gore we see is an animal
Lots of guns, lasers, and explosives are used
A lot of blood, but little actual gore
A lot of people die
A woman is naked briefly, but nothing is shown and it is not presented in a sexual way
I don't think there's any flashing lights, but a a lot of scenes take place at night and some aren't very well lit.
The robot mannerisms may be disturbing to some
Overall this OVA is dark and suspenseful
This is all I can think of, if there's any more I need to add please let me know.
