“I read about a Galar pokémon called alcremie...one of the guides I read said they make good therapy pokémon.”  She’s been researching lately, as shown by the infodumping.  “But also sylveon are supposed to be good, and chansey...oh, but one of my doctors said his daughter has a chikorita!”

Mother is — complicated.  Her therapist and doctors say that it’s all right if she never forgives her, if they’re never close again.  After everything.  And Lillie isn’t afraid of that, the way she thought she would be.  She has others she cares about now, who care about her; she doesn’t feel alone.  And she’s stronger now.  And yet ——

Lusamine is still her mother, despite all the time she spent being anything but.  “Mother?” she asks, as she pushes open the door, voice small, practiced, not taking up too much space — Mother always hated when she did that.  She was meant to be an ornament, not a distraction.  Old habits die hard.  “Are you feeling better?”

“I’m sorry that your clinic got in trouble ‘cause of me, Miss Bennie.”  Some of her mother’s goons, looking for the precious thing that Lillie can’t give up, can’t let anyone see.  Bennie hid her, like she’s been helping her hide for ages, and the men left once they couldn’t find Lillie or Nebby, but not before ransacking the place.  “I...I’ll find some way to pay you back.  I’m not very strong, but I can find some kind of a job, or — or ——”

“I, um — I really like your hair, Barbara —”  She does, all short and curly and free.  She’s — sad, too, a little, that they don’t look as much alike anymore.  And envious, too.  Envious.  Mother never let her put her hair up, so it’s always tied up these days.  But Mother never let her cut it, either, and she’s yet to have the strength to ———  “Was it scary?  To cut it, I mean?”

While far from knowing the whole story, he can certainly… Understand her fear. Her wariness. He never pried, for obvious reasons, just knowing that she had experience with everything beforehand. How long? How deep? He had no idea. And it wasn’t his place to know. He just… Held a smile on his face. Hoping it was reassuring.

His whole adventure ran through his own head almost constantly. It was difficult to forget, especially considering everything he - they - did. So he could figure… That much out. His hand raised a little, but balled up and went into his pocket.

He was lucky he knew to watch his words around her.

“Of course! I’m not trying to take you anywhere - just talk.” He motioned with his free hand. “We’re not in Alola, so you’re the expert. Is there somewhere… You’d trust going? A park, a cafe, something like that? I’d be happy to go wherever - you’ll just have to lead me.”

He gave a bump to his backpack, and a shiny Litten poked its head out, before laying on his shoulder, staring at her.

“This, uh… This is my little buddy, Udon, by the way. He’s a service Pokemon - he specializes in calming people down.”

He seems — kind.  Lillie knows she’s a particular flavor of naive, but she likes to think she’s a good judge of character; or maybe just that she got so used to seeing Mother past Lusamine, so used to seeing the ugly cruelty no one else could, that she’s overconfident.  Either way, she nods, less sure than she looks, and not looking all that sure, either.  

The girl (  ?  ) perks, thought, at Litten’s appearance.  “Oh!”  It’s hard not to — well, she does love cute things, and Litten is very cute.  A hand twitches at her side as if to reach out to it, but doesn’t get very far before she’s back in her right mind and the hand is back at her side.

A cafe sounded — safe.  “Oh...Okay.  There’s a cafe nearby that's good — at least, I think so.  They have treats for pokémon, too.”  For Udon.  It’s a cute name — though she doesn’t know what it means off the top of her head.  More importantly, the cafe is public, often full off people, and people who know her, at least a little; who will help her if things go poorly. 

“You and — Udon can follow me.”  She starts off slowly, hoping he’ll walk at her sides instead of behind her, where she can’t see.  “Um — was it hard?  To get a service pokémon?”

“That’s ‘cause you are strong, Lillie! One of the strongest people I know!” He’s relieved to know both her and the pokemon are okay, despite how painful the bruises look. She really is strong…

“I’m real glad you’re both okay! And… it does look kinda painful, but maybe putting ice on it would help? ‘Sides, I’m sure those bullies you fought look way worse right now!” He gives a reassuring grin, resting his hands behind his head. 

Lillie’s learning to believe in her own strength, to take confidence from herself and not just from others.  To allow herself to believe that she’s good, even if nobody is telling her.  But it’s nice to hear, too, that others think she’s strong, too — let alone someone as strong and good as Hau!  

“Yeah — the bruises probably be sore tomorrow if I don’t ice them.”  A thought occurs to her.  “Want to get something sweet together?  I bet an ice cream shop will be able to give me a little bag of ice.”

“What!? Are you okay!?” He never expected Lillie of all people to get into a fight, but he couldn’t blame her if a pokemon was being hurt. “Is the pokemon okay?”

“I’m fine!  I feel really strong!”  Mother struck them sometimes, though those weren’t really fights; it has really only scared Lillie because she wasn’t allowed to protect herself.  Now that she can hit back, it’s fine!  And it feels good, powerful, to know she can protect people and pokémon.  “Yes!  I gave her to Professor Kukui, and he's taking care of her.”  She presses a hand carefully to one of the bruises on her cheek.  “Does my face look bad, though?”
