every moment of your life, from birth to death, constantly, while you aren't looking, there's some kind of weird shapes just moving around in the ocean. and the shapes are eating eachother sometimes too. and they might even dig holes. and all of this is happening during everything else that's going on. like think about the most important moment in your life. the thing that shaped you as a person. the entire time that was happening, far away, deep in the ocean, where no human has ever seen, there was some kind of wet sack with a weird protrusion flailing about in the water. maybe it even grabbed a fish. who knows. i don't. just think about that for a bit

We are 4 months into this year and I have now commenced the first annual re-read of all the Boat Boys books. Just wanna say 1. Thank you all so much for your hard work and delicious words, and 2. Goddam it's refreshing to see social work practiced in a healthy and positive way in any kind of media.

Ah! What a delight! :D And yes, absolutely! Social work and care management are a hugely vital part of my whole deal as a hospital nurse, even if I don't interface with them directly--but before I started working at the hospital, I think my only exposure to the concept was probably like...the movie role of "Coldhearted Social Worker Is Here To Take Your Kids" and things like that. Which is entirely unfair, because there's SUCH a broad spectrum of amazing help that social workers are out there providing people! But that's media representation for you I guess, haha.

TBH, in the Fleet we've constructed I can't imagine how social workers wouldn't be crucial. Basically every quirk of the Fleet stems pretty directly from the situation of its founding, which was "We are a lot of traumatized refugees from collapsing landside societies and we are doing our utmost to look to the future and figure out how you raise a society that can subsist in crowded, insular little communities while living in vessels that need to be upkept and optimized constantly to keep things running smoothly".

Which turned out to basically be: lots of glorifying hard work and teamwork, aggressively destigmatizing sexual and romantic openness (to reduce relationship friction/drama as much as possible), and endless reiterations that COOPERATION and COMMUNICATION are key. The Fleet loves a social worker, a maintenance worker, a cleaning crew, a person who makes society sail smoothly. It hates a freeloader or an antisocial crewmate who jams up the works. Social workers, case managers/Reassessment, PRT sex therapists, Social Maintenance Techs/therapists like Liam's dad Leo--they're all part of the enormous amount of manpower directed toward keeping this machine of a society running, because the margin for error when you all live on boats is SMALL haha.
