Chapter 13: The Beginnings of An Eclipse (ARC 1 END)

You get into a fight with the Daycare Attendant. A rather big one. The emotional scars that come forward are something that will require healing and communication. But first, you and the Daycare Attendant sure do have some issues.

There is yelling. There is the glitch, a topic still uncertain about. You are held accountable for your words and actions. Sun breaks the rules and leaves the Daycare. Moon makes you promise something. There's crying involved, and hugs, and maybe a little bit of blood and robot gore.

my sister would have wanted me to politicize her death so that is exactly what i will do here.

on december 28th, my sister went to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain that she attributed to a UTI. they did a CT scan and found a 14cm tumor. they diagnosed her with stage 4 ovarian cancer and told her to start seeing specialists. for reasons unbeknownst to me, they didn't do a biopsy, or even attempt to schedule one for her, and she went home.

she spent the next 5 weeks being turned in circles by various specialists. the first oncologist told her that she would be fine, that she was young (only 42) and otherwise healthy, and she "wasn't going anywhere anytime soon." however, she could not afford the biopsy that was needed at the time, because she didn't have insurance. the out of pocket cost was too high, and there wasn't an option to be billed later.

these oncologists told her that her best bet was to quit her job and apply for medicaid in order to receive care, but my sister was a normal everyday person living paycheck to paycheck, and that was an impossible request. even if she did quit her job, she would still need to wait to be approved by medicaid.

she called my father on friday, in tears because she was just told by the hospital that she needed to come up with $800 upfront for a PET scan, a 20% downpayment. he had to scrounge up the money to pay for the scan himself.

on monday morning, she woke up with abdominal pain, vomiting, and loss of bowel control. she decided to stay home from work, something she never did, and her roommate offered to stay home with her in order to look after her.

her response: "no, we can't afford for both of us to miss work. i'll just take a shower and go back to sleep."

he came home and she was dead. 5 weeks after diagnosis. she was told she had years but she had a matter of days.

this was her final post on facebook, 2 days before she died. this is literally just the reality of how healthcare works in this country. and she'd want people to know that.

she was a good person doing what was expected of her, she was proactive and aggressive trying to get care, and this is what happened to her. no one gave her care, or tried to help her understand her diagnosis. they just would pat her on the back and say she was going to be fine, without knowing anything, and while refusing to find out.

It’s so fucked up how tiktok culture has made clout-poisoned people turn the public into content, every day I see people minding their business have their entire faces put online for thousands of likes, a couple kissing on the train, a lady dancing across a cross walk, a guy nodding his head to the music at a club, a lady buying a banana at the store, ring camera footage of the neighbors kids being stupid. Just let people live jfc

I think that there’s not enough talk about triggers that shouldn’t be warned for. There’s a bit of talk about not warning for body differences as “body horror” (that should be reserved for fictional depictions), but not about other triggers, and I think this is actually hampering intersectionality.

The main one I’m going to get into is being triggered by masculinity. This is a you problem. You can avoid men somewhat, but men (and people you think are men) will exist around you. Yes, this includes in public bathrooms. You need to learn how to deal with that (in ways that do not involve the police), and if you are so afraid of peeing in proximity to someone you perceive as a man you need to use exclusively single stall bathrooms. Public places are not your safe space.

So Netflix is releasing this animated movie but here’s the thing - all backgrounds are done in AI. No actual BG artists were hired or credited for this work.

And here’s the kicker - I gave them too much credit. I realized that not even the AI users are credited apparently. Check this out:

I know it’s tempting, but please don’t hate-watch this thing. Numbers equal profit even if the people watching are just doing it to mock. Don’t give Netflix and other studios even more incentive to fire more animators and replace them with machines trained on their work and skill. 

Hilarously, the excuse used is ‘there aren’t enough artists’. That’s not true - there are more than enough artists, but the real issue is that no one wants to pay a living wage. Here’s a short video about the reality of animation in Japan.

The biggest winners in this equation at the end of the day are the AI infrastructure owners - owners of Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc. Do not feed this machine, it creates more monopolization of entire industries, raises a powerful few and dehumanizes the rest.

Noelle has been criticized for her actions in the New Girl entry because some people see it as her "obsessing over someone bullying her friend".

But all of Noelle's actions in New Girl were to protect Kris...

...by trying her hardest to make herself a target instead.

Noelle shows symptoms of fawning behavior - which is a trauma response.

And that's what's troubling - not her crush on Susie.

To begin with, Noelle stays behind initially because she's worried about Kris.

And before this, she's tried several times to get Kris to switch seats so Susie can't bully them.

Kris, for unknown reasons, refused to switch seats.

She does the same thing in Chapter 1 if you tell her Susie slammed Kris into the lockers.

She'll try to switch places with Kris.

Noelle is actually a lot more concerned about Kris than Kris is about Kris.

When Susie says something particularly cruel, Noelle will say she felt genuinely sick.

And that she wanted to do something to help Kris in the moment, but she froze.

Later, she'll say she ordered apple shampoo so Susie might leave Kris alone.

All of these actions were her trying to protect Kris...by making herself a target instead.

I don't think this is meant to be cute. Noelle shows signs of fawning behavior.

Fawning is a trauma response that can originate in childhood.

Noelle certainly has trouble saying "no" and establishing boundaries.

And she definitely represses her own needs and emotions at times.

(also, a "fawn" is a young deer. there's a nonzero chance that this pun is intentional in Noelle's case)

What's troubling about Noelle's behavior here isn't her crush on Susie - it's that if she thinks someone is in danger...

...she'll try to sacrifice herself instead of standing up for herself or them.

At the end of Chapter 2, Queen tries to exploit this by threatening Susie.

But this time, Noelle stands up for not just Susie but for herself -

...apparently inspired by Susie's own ability to do so, even pointing the same way.

In Susie's case, fawning wasn't actually "necessary".

Noelle is delighted and relieved when she sees that Kris and Susie are getting along now.

She wanted Susie to turn out to be good.

Susie and Kris worked out their issues on their own.

Susie would never have laid a hand on Noelle.

And Susie rejects the idea of someone fawning over her with clear discomfort.

Noelle got to know the real Susie over the course of Chapter 2...

As someone who's caring, brave, and scary...in a good way.

Their real relationship is something warm, relaxed, and genuine for both of them.

Noelle's behavior in New Girl was troubling, but not because she wasn't trying to protect Kris...

...it's because her method of protecting Kris was to fawn and try to make herself into a target instead.

And it's something she's starting to work on.
