Further development of concept, pattern design ideas and garment contextualisation for the King Costume. The end result must look
bold,
superior
cold
wealthy
-and tie well with St. Basils Cathedral architecture-

Developing my design ideas, making miniature  St. Basil's cathedral spiral tower tops from plaster casting. Initial patterns were developed on illustrator using geometric shapes, mimicking the detailing of the source material.

Initial King Moodboard. Architecture features heavily, with blue being the dominant colour symbolising the coldness of the king's character.

King Costume. The second character I will design for from this same ballet; Firebird, is the King. He is ruthless, cold, and only cares about his possessions. The most important of which is his kingdom. For this reason, the print for this costume will feature a lot of architecture. Shapes and colours will be inspired by St. Basils Cathedral, which is based in Russia, where this ballet was created.

Initial moodboard for the Firebird character. The character brings extreme joy as well as sadness to those who capture it, the bird encompasses polar opposites in it's gifts. I will try and capture the essence of this character in the prints!
Key words:
Extravagent, yet simple.
Bold, yet refined
Bright, and feminine
- As my costume collaboration partner is keen to update this traditional ballet into a more modern and practical ballet, with DURABLE costumes which will need little to no repair - through using structured garment shapes, materials, and limiting the print options to DIGITAL print only - where there will be no further embellishment.

Firebird Research start - as the ballet is a very traditional and old one, I have researched older, traditional textiles such as william morris prints, the illustration artwork appearing in the 'Firebird Novel' and Armani and Gucci collections showcasing elaborate and extravagant colours, intricate pattetrs and texture: a look which is perfect for the much desired Firebird character in the ballet.
