so i was thinking,,

the first time Gllinda sees the grimmerie, she reaches towards it, in reverence. the last time, she stumbles away from it, disenchanted with the thing that once she idolized and made her happy

ANYWAY i have feelings about Glinda and her canon love for magic

So I was listening to ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’ and it just hit me that Glinda has to be absolutely devastated during that number because the best friend she has ever had has just died, as far as she knows, but she promised Elphie that she wouldn’t try to clear Elphie’s name so Glinda just has to stand there and listen to all of these people celebrate the fact that her best friend is dead and I am not okay

do you know if any of the recent Bway Elphabas or Glindas are queer? feel like it elevates the show so much if so, i feel like just don't know how the performers feel about Gelphie/who is leaning into that element of the characters

That I know of, openly queer women who are playing/have played Elphaba on Broadway: Mary Kate Morrissey, Lissa deGuzman, Lindsay Pearce, Hannah Corneau.

And not on Broadway (unfortunately) but Cynthia Erivo is openly bi :)

For Glinda I only know of Suzie Mathers, who wasn't on Broadway either but still deserves to be mentioned because she was insane in the role.

do you ever sit and think about how excellent wicked is as a tragedy. like both elphaba and glinda spend all of act 2 until for good doubling down on the choices/mindsets that put them in their situations in the first place -- elphaba continues making impulsive, bold decisions that just turn the ozians against her; glinda continues staying within the corrupt system despite realizing she has no real agency to change it -- and when they finally see eye to eye and each try to implement the other's perspective, it's too late for them to work as a team for more than just a moment. and it just baffles me that like 95% of the general public just sees this show as a fun wizard of oz prequel

"Glin, are you ready to go?" Elphaba's voice sounds outside of the door of their shared dormitory bathroom, "We're going to be late if you take any longer!"

"Yes, yes, just another few minutes..." Glinda sighs, preening over her own reflection in the mirror. She needs to look absolutely perfect today, for she intends to propose to Elphaba at the picnic this afternoon.

After applying one final coat of lip gloss and just a touch of glitter to her eyelids, Glinda steps back, checking over her reflection and smoothing out the wrinkles in her yellow sundress and slipping a white jacket over her dress. Satisfied with her appearance, she opens the bathroom door to find Elphaba in a slim black jumpsuit, that-- in a style not typical of her Elphie-- lacks sleeves.

"Ready now?" Elphaba asks, and Glinda is still speechless at the sight of her girlfriend.

Frankly, she's shocked that Elphaba would dare show so much skin. But it is summer, after all. And Glinda has noticed, in the three years since she and Elphaba had dated, that Elphaba has grown so much more comfortable in her own skin. Perhaps an effect of baring it to Glinda so frequently...?

Regaining her composure, Glinda takes another look at Elphaba and her sharp collarbones, and then glances outside, where the summer sun is now obscured by clouds.

"I'm ready," Glinda crosses the room to pick up the picnic basket, ensuring that the box for the ring is tucked safely inside, "But you aren't."

"What do you mean?"

"You need to wear a jacket--"

"It's the middle of summer!"

"And you never know when a sudden squall could appear! The last thing I want is my girlfriend melting away during a romantic picnic!"

Elphaba grumbles, "I don't have a suitable summer jacket."

"Then you can borrow one of mine," Glinda replies, rummaging through her closet with her free hand, pulling out a thin black cardigan and handing it to Elphaba, "This should do nicely."

Elphaba slips it on, and while Glinda is dissapointed that it covers up so much of that tantalizing emerald skin, she knows its more than worth it to keep her soon-to-be-fiancee safe from the elements.

Hey, weird question. I always see in stories people referring to Glinda's parents as Larena Upland and Highmunster Arduenna, but I went to double-check in the first book and she mentions twice that the Arduenna clan name comes from her mother's side. She says in the second chapter: 'Then I must overcome my natural shyness. My name is Galinda. I am of the Arduenna Clan on my mother’s side.' And then when they are meeting the Wizard: 'Oh, you useless thing, all talk and no—I’m Glinda from Frottica, if you please, Your Highness, descended matrilineally from the Arduennas of the Upland, and this, if you please, is Elphaba, the Thropp Third Descending from Nest Hardings. If you please.'

So I was wondering if you know how family names work in the Oz lore. Such as, if Highmunster is actually Upland, would Larena be called Lady Upland? I've been trying to write for practice, and the last name situation always gets me stuck.

Ah yes. The confusion regarding Glinda's parents comes from Maguire retconning her mother's last name in the third book. Kind of. Now I may be wrong about this but we never learn anything of Glinda's dad in the first book, it was always her mother brought up as being "of the Arduennas of the Upland." That made me think "Arduennas of the Upland" was the whole nobility thing and Glinda's dad was just some random guy, hence why her "good blood" was only from "one side."

BUT THEN. In the third book there's a very stupid and pointless family tree that shows her mother as an Upland and her father as an Arduenna. And in the fourth book, Glinda even refers to her mother as an Upland, and that as the reason why they're filthy rich. In my opinion that's just a continuity error? Because then does that mean the Uplands are the ones with the noble blood? And her father was an Arduenna this whole time when he was never mentioned before?

Maguire. What. Tbh, to this day I still don't know if I'm missing something there.

As to whether or not she'd be called Lady Upland, that's very much up to you I would say, since you get to assign Glinda's parents whatever last names you prefer thanks to canon being so messy there. Glinda herself is called Lady Chuffrey after she gets married, so there is precedent to women taking their husband's last names!

do y'all ever think about how elphaba was so alone and desperate during the time skip between acts that eventually she decided to ask her father for help? the man that made her feel so guilty over her mother's death? the man that told her not to talk so much? the man that shunned her her entire life? their relationship was so bad she was glad he died and said things were better then. what was her breaking point, i wonder. what made her decide that going back to that was better than the alternative. (and what a horrible thing to go through. either live as a fugitive or go back to the man that hates you.)
