Catra Character Analysis

Catra is an extremely determined character and is driven strongly by self-preservation and the disintegration of her relationship with Adora. She isn’t strongly ideologically connected to The Horde, she cares very little for The Horde as an entity. However, she is extremely indoctrinated into the way of life and to some extent the value system as she has never even seen any other way of life.

Catra spent her whole life struggling under the hordes control. She was disliked by the other cadets of her age and seen as inferior to her only friend by their leader. Shadow Weaver used physical torture and extreme emotional abuse on Catra. She was their surrogate mother and the leader of everything they do. The trauma she went through shapes her and the other people living under the horde control.

She was exceptional within the young cadets to almost the same degree as Adora but was disliked so she always grew up feeling inferior. She knew she was good, but she was never useful. Adora also was tasked with being her minder another thing that reinforced her disconnection from the others.

Her relationship with Adora is integral to both of their arcs in the show. They are very close, very implied they were crushing hard on each other. As a child, Adora acted as her protector to Catra, and they were both the others only really strong emotional connection and before the start of the show, I think the healthiest connection Catra has. Catra attempted to protect Adora even after Adora abandoned her and genuinely wanted her friend back. However her indoctrination into the Horde way of thinking and a personal feeling of wanting to hurt Adora’s friends because they hurt her she lashes out, and ends up hurting innocent people. Then Catra entirely lets go of the good that her love for Adora allowed her and she chooses to only grasp for power after the visions she is showed reminding her of how second best was treated her whole life and then the fact that Adora broke the promise their whole relationship is founded on.

Catra’s relationships with Scorpia and Entrapta are extremely unhealthy on Catra’s end. She is too focused to really give any thought to actually forming a relationship with them and ends up being dismissive of Scorpia and honestly rather cruel to Entrapta. Scorpia and she become a team by necessity from Catra’s perspective (she needs someone on her side to do anything) and for Scorpia, Catra is the only one who really even listens to her. Entrapta on the other is straight up manipulated into doing what Catra wants. Entrapta similar to the other two in the scene has no ideological drive to do anything, so there is no need to plead the Horde’s case all Catra really has to do is play on the natural fear of abandonment and the “otherness” they all feel. It is an act that is rather mean and effective.

Overall Catra is a clever, resourceful and frightened girl. She acts out on her hurt feeling by closing off and committing to becoming powerful to try and subvert everything she was told she was. But unlike Adora instead of breaking out completely from the power structure that hurt them, she sticks to the main premise of the Horde (power for power’s sake) and just decides she will have the power within the destructive system they grew up in.
